About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Clé de Peau Beauté SS2013: Eye Color Quad in 209 Sapphire [Swatches & LOTD]

    Hi!

This entry features the brand new cle de peau Eye Color Quad released with their SS2013 collection.  The palette 209 Sapphire contains 4 shades, 3 of them are rich earthen hues, and rich deep Sapphire shade to create chic and elegant eyelooks.

The palette and the casing are sold separately - the case comes with two applicators, a mirror and a pouch.  You pop the palette itself into the case, or you can also just pop the palettes into larger palettes that you already have.

For photos and swatches of the other Eye Color Quad 210 Aquamarine, click on this entry here.

Here's a closer look at the palette - cle de peau eyeshadows are very soft and contain skincare benefits to achieve delicate depth and refinement.
There is a slight overspray of the cle de peau logo on the eyeshadows - but they rub off after the first use and don't actually offer any color payoff during application.

A closer look at the colors:

    Swatches:

And the overall look - I tried to recreate the look that the cle de peau makeup artist did on me during the makeover - though I did make the look way more intense myself.  It is just much easier to slap on the colors on yourself than on someone else, in my opinion, simply because I know how much I need to make my eyes pop.

I love how the paler shimmering shades in this palette serve to accentuate the eyes, and contrast with the blue to really add dimension to the eyes.

    Colors I used:

    1. Apply the palest champage shade on the brow bone.

    2. Apply the medium brown shade on the lids up to the crease.

    3. Define the eyes with a dark blue eyepencil (I used Burberry Midnight Blue eye pencil), and go over this line with the Sapphire blue eyeshadow, I also smudge the line and make it look thicker.

    4. Do the same for the blue on the lower lids, going in all the way to halfway of each eye.

    5. On the inner corners, and just under the blue, dabbed the pale champage shade to give the eyes a pop, and more 3D looking.

Finish up with mascara and/or falsies.

Here's the overall look againg - it is something which I have been enjoying, a natural eyelook with a colored liner.

    All products used:

Face - Rachel K CC Cream Fair, cle de peau Brightening Powder Foundation (NEW), cle de peau Concealer

Cheeks - cle de peau blush color from their Voyage Palette (a peachy pink shade) * swatches & photos here, Shiseido Bronzer 02 to contour

Lips - cle de peau Lip Luminizer 221 Sweet Nougat

Eyes - NARS Primer, cle de peau Eye Color Quad in 209 Sapphire

Liner & Lashes - Shu Uemura Farfarllina, Burberry Midnight Blue pencil liner

Overall, a very sophisticated take on neutrals and colors.  The palette really calls to mind the beautiful shades of the Mediterranean, very summery. Definitely enjoyed using the palette to create this look.   Do check out the collection which is already available at all cle de peau counters.  :)

    Hope you enjoyed this entry!

Clé de Peau Beauté SS2013: Eye Color Quad in 210 Aquamarine [Swatches & LOTD]

    Hi!

This entry features the brand new cle de peau Eye Color Quad released with their SS2013 collection.  The palette 210 Aquamarine contains 4 shades, 3 of them are rich earthen hues, and an aquamarine blue.

For my review on the 209 Sapphire palette - click on this entry here.

The palette and the casing are sold separately - the case comes with two applicators, a mirror and a pouch.  You pop the palette itself into the case, or you can also just pop the palettes into larger palettes that you already have.

In my LOTD, I used the following shades:

    1. Apply blue all over my lids.

    2. Apply the deepest brown on the outer corner - I wanted to give my eyes more definition other than just the blue on my lids, and also elongate the shape of my eyes.

    3. Apply the shimmering brown on the lower lids, and the gold shade closer to the inner corners of the eyes.

Overall, a very simple look which is made more interesting with the use of the aquamarine shade on the lids.  The eyeshadows are very soft, and easy to blend.  They are also easy to build up if you prefer more color intensity.

Here you can see the shimmers of the eyeshadow, they are very pretty, and go on the eyes very smoothly.

    Here's the overall look.
I couldn't find a good picture of the eye closeup though.

I like the use of the brown shade on the outer corner of my eyes, it is done more 'far out' than I normally do,
and I think it serves to really give the illusion of deeper and longer eyeshape.

and the pop of blue on the lids.

    All products used:

Face - Rachel K CC Cream Fair, cle de peau Brightening Powder Foundation (NEW), cle de peau Concealer

Cheeks - cle de peau blush color from their Voyage Palette (a peachy pink shade) * swatches & photos here, Shiseido Bronzer 02 to contour

Lips - cle de peau Lip Luminizer 221 Sweet Nougat

Eyes - NARS Primer, cle de peau Eye Color Quad in 210 Aquamarine

Liner & Lashes - Shu Uemura Farfarllina, NARS Larger than Life stylo liner (black)

Overall, the palette offers neutral loves a little variety in the inclusion of the aquamarine blue - and if you like a cooler toned blue, stay tuned for my next entry on the next palette in the collection.   Do check out the collection which is already available at all cle de peau counters.  :)

    Hope you enjoyed this entry!

LOTD: Festive Look with cle de peau Palette de Voyage [with Brows & Eyelook step by step!]

    Hi hi!

This is a look featuring the cle de peau Voyage de Palette which I mentioned in this entry here.  It is not often that you come across a palette with a specific brow powder, so I am throwing in a quick step by step of how I would fill in my brows.

I ended up with a smokey sparkly look and as I am looking at the pictures now, I realise that this palette really reminds me of the Chanel holiday, in particular the Harmonie du Soir quad - in terms of the bronze gold, pink and taupe shades.

Here is the color placement of everything I used:

and a swatch just to recap:

I only used the lighter of the brow powder to fill in my brows.   Please note that I have not professionally trimmed my brows in almost a year.  I just tweezed the stray hairs from time to time.  I prefer my brows full and relatively define, but with a soft color.  I like  that the brow powder in this palette is just ashy enough and doesn't contain any red tones which is important for brows defining.

    * this is by no means an indepth brow tutorial, I have done one before - link here!

    1. I used the angled brush to draw a line under the shape of my brows - this will form the basis of my brows.

    2. The line is drawn, and I will proceed to draw a parallel line at the top of where I want my brows to be.

    3. You see here, I am just filling in the area between the two lines I have drawn.

    4. Where the two lines meet at the arch, that's where I will sharpen the ends of the brow.

    and the eyelook -

    1. Apply brow color on the brow bone (I primed my eyelids with NARS primer).  The only shade in the palette which I am using is really a tad too dark for my browbone...but I do want some sheen there..hence I went ahead anyway.

    2. Apply the golden crease color.  I am glad this is the largest area of the palette, but I think this gold is my fave shade in the quad.  It is pigmented, and as you can see in the picture it contains very shiny gold bits.

    3. Apply the darkest brown bronze shade on the lids.  The color is easy to blend out, and I try to blend it into the gold...though I think some clear lines could still be seen.  Note that I used the same brush applicator throughout this eyelook.  It is soft enough for blending, and dense enough to pick up and apply the various shades.  When using one single brush for a look, I usually start by applying the lightest shade first.

    4. I dabbed a little of the pink shade in the inner lids.. this is controversial, some pple might not like it, thinking it might result in a tired eyes.. but I think it looks all neaten up when the liner and lips are on.  (I used a black liquid liner for the look, inside of using the dark brown liner shade).   I also skipped the mascara, cos I don't really use mascara... and I am using a pair of demi lashes from DUP (413).

Then I finished the look by dusting on the cheek colors and applying the lipstick.

My foundation routine - I am using the cle de peau silky creme foundation, cle de peau concealer, and La Mer powder to set.

Overall, this is a pricey palette, but you are getting quite a few goodies in side, and the colors though are not extraordinarily unique, you do get a variety of luxe textures and finish.  The brushes are of decent quality, and you can actually use them, if you are going to travel with it.    It is also a very elegant and luxe gift for that someone special if your life, I may add.   I know I will be popping this lipstick into my bag when I am going out tonight!

Hope this entry has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

cle de peau Palette de Voyage [Photos & Swatches]

"A voyage to find unexplored beauty for your own"

A daring voyage.  An escape from the everyday.  The chance to explore.

An exciting opportunity - perhaps to discover unknown facets of your beauty.

Embark upon a voyage inspired by this season's makeup and be transported by all the wondrous types of beauty there are.

The cle de peau Palette de Voyage is currently available at all cle de pau counters, and retails for S$260.   I will be featuring this palette including swatches in this entry.   I will be following up with a look and a brow step by step in the next entry.

A small trunk packed with exquisite makeup, ready to accompany you on a thrilling voyage of beauty.

To a candlelight dinner.  A sojourn at a resort.  An elegant afternoon tea.

Whatever the destination, this limited edition palette is your ticket to sophisticated glamour and radiant beauty.  It will fill your heart with anticipation and delight you from the moment it's held in your hand.

The palette comes in a trunk case design with a detachable ribbon with the CPD logo printed on it.  It has two magnetic closures.

    Here's what it contains:

The Mascara (4.4ml) - accentuate eyes by lengthening, curling and adding volume to each individual lash.  The brush is specialy designed to enhance the curling effect as it lavishly separates and extends lashes upward.

Eye Color Quad (full size, 5g)- Each delicate shade has superb clarity and depth, even when layered.  Imbued with treatment benefits, this luxurious spectrum of colors creates stunning looks for every occasion.  They are intensely smooth, and contains multi-dimensional shimmer bits.  The gold shade especially, is really quite pretty.

Cheer Color  (3.5g)- Imparts a soft veil of color to cheeks as it exquisitely sculpts the features of your face.  This is a peachy pink blush that contains a subtle gold sheen.  Very soft, and very radiant.

Extra Rich Lipstick (mini, 2.5g)- Elegantly lustrous, this luxurious lipstick is instilled with intensive skincare benefits to create beautifully contoured lips in a glamourously sultry shade of feminine rose.  This is a deep rosy red containing ultra fine sparkles.  The color payoff is quite intense.

Eyeliner and eyebrow powder  (2g) - A versatile powder that can be used to smoothly draw ultrafine lines around eyes and add elegant definition to brows.

It also comes with 3 dua-ended applicators for your easy use.  They are quite firm and soft, and the quality is quite soft.  In my LOTD, I did my brows and eyelook using the two smaller brushes, and I used only my own cheek brush to apply the blush.

    Swatches:

All the shades are very soft and smooth, and very intensely pigmented.  They work well together.

Swatches of lipcolor on my lips - I have been loving this kind of shades lately.  If you feel a little intimidated by the intense color, you can always tone it down by some blotting with a piece of tissue.

Stay tuned for my LOTD, coming up next.

    Thank you for reading!

    Current Faves [Jan 2012]

    Hi hi!!

    It is FEBUARY already!   *disbelief*

I thought I will give an update on some recent stuff which I have been loving lately.  Not really full reviews, but a few quick points about each item. Some are old products, and some are recent additions.

Collection2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer 01 FAIR

I can see why this product is so highly raved in the UK beauty community.  Really deserves the hype!  I have been testing this under my eyes lately, and it is quite amazing (I mean to just brighten up the undereye area, since the shade isn't really a undereye corrector shade).

    • Brightening Effect
    • Lasting throughout the day
    • No creasing even though used under the eyes
    • Gives awesome coverage, thick but easy to blend out by dabbing over my skin

    Illamasqua Skinbase SHADE 04

    • A little goes a long way, flawless finish
    • Need to buff buff buff!
    • Smells nice, lasts the whole day
    • A little shiny though I can put up with it, and just blot my oily T zone.

The following are items which I keep grabbing for when I do my makeup everyday.

Loose Powder - CHANEL Ultra Fine Translucent Loose Powder

This loose powder is different from my usual CHANEL translucent loose powder (which comes in different shades) it is like the HD version of a loose powder, ultra fine, much like the MUFE HD powder.  I was just trying to rotate my loose powders, and decided to use it more often.

Highlighter - Cle de Peau Vintage Palette III

I like to dust this powder all over my face.  It smells awesome, and gives a faint nice glow.

    Lipglosses

Chanel Extrait de Gloss in Genie and Glossimer 287 I think the name is Morning Aurora?  I layer them together, and the color is just a very natural slightly orangey pinky shade.  It is creamy but not sticky.

    Revlon Lipbutter Creamsicle

Great pale shade which is still wearable.

    Cheeks

Soap & Glory blush, Dior awakening blush

    Perfume

Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger - Clean, not too spicy,

    Nail Polish

SpaRitual Nail Polish remover, lint free cotton pads

    Nails Inc topcoat and basecoat

Makeup Remover: I purchased 2 bottles of the Hada Labo Hydrating Makeup Remover at Watsons when they had a promo, heard great reviews about it.  I think it is great for removing my daily makeup of Foundation, Blush, and any little eyeshadow etc.  If I have full face makeup, I would still reach for my Shu Uemura or Fancl oil cleansers.

What have you been loving?  Leave your top picks in the comments below!

    Thanks for looking.   :)

LOTD: Smokey Metallic Brown Eyes [GA ETK #5 & Illamasqua Ore Pigment]

    Hi hi!

Just a quick LOTD entry, before I leave the house.  Hope everyone had a great Xmas weekend, and if you haven't taken part in my giveaway, click HERE to do so! :)

Today, I decided to use my Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill intense in #5 Gold Blitz which my gf gave to me,  because she hasn't much use for it.  I was very glad to take over.  It is a very easy to use color, and blends itself out up onto the crease perfectly.  I wanted to add more bling to the metallic golden brown shade, so I patted some Illamasqua Ore Pure Pigment on the centre of my lids.  The pigment is so finely milled, there is hardly any fallout.

Tried to keep the rest of the face as flawless as I could, and some pop of rosey color on the cheeks and lips.   I love this type of 'interesting' smokey neutral eyes, so there is no use trying to justify why I need 380293890148 metallic browns or neutrals in my stash.

I am also almost ready to review my new Shu Uemura Smooth Fit foundation, and I think you can see from this set of pictures that my face looks very ahem, cough, nice and smooth ya?   This is probably my current fave foundation, and I am glad I purchased it before waiting for it to be released in Singapore.   The review will be up in a couple of days, where I will show you how I apply the foundation, and my detailed thoughts on it.

    All products used:

Shu Uemura Mousse base in Pink, Shu Uemura Smooth Fit liquid foundation, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder, Cle de Peau concealer for spots, Mac Prep+Prime highlighter for undereyes

Cheeks - Giorgio Armani Micro Fil powder in light pink (beautiful opalescent glow!!!) MUFE Mat Bronzer, MAC Conjure Up mineralised blush (LE)

Eyes & Lips -- surprisingly small number of products --

Etude House primer, GA ETK #5, Illamasqua Ore pigment, Heavy Rotation Liquid Liner

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet La Distinguee

Hope you enjoyed this LOTD, and see you soon!

    Thanks for looking!

    LOTD: Happy Holidays Everyone!

    Hi hi!

Heading out for a bit soon, nothing fancy, I don't think I am doing anything much this festive weekend, except maybe to get more entries out, spend time with the family, and just relaxing.

I do realise I have one red eye in this set of pictures, it's just some minor irritation while I washed my face prior to doing my makeup.

I decided to use my Giorgio Armani eyes to kill in #15, and it is simply WOWZA.  How can just one single product create a 'complicated' eyelook?  I didn't have to work too hard to make the eyelook complete, and it lasts and lasts the whole day, I swear.  Somehow I managed to accumulate 8 of these ETK this year, and I love every single one of them.   Do stay tuned for a GA ETK focus entry sometime in the next two days!

    All products used:

Base - Missha Perfect Cover BB cream, Dior Forever Fluid Foundation, ettusais mineral powder to set, Shu Uemura Pro Gel cealer to conceal spots, Dior Skinflash to brighten under the eyes

Eyes - Etude House primer, GA ETK #15 all over the lids and blended up onto the crease, NARS Larger than Life pencils (Via Veneto on upper lids, Rue Bonaparte on lower lids)

Cheeks - Cle de Peau Vintage Palette III to highlight (lovely glow!), Shiseido Bronzer, Tarte Amazonian Blush Tipsy

    On my nails:

Deborah Lippmann Stormy Weather as base, I love Nightlife on top

Thanks for looking, and have an awesome weekend!

Sneak Peak: Mega Christmas Edition [NARS, Giorgio Armani, LUSH, Bioderma, Maquillage, Cle de Peau...]

Collected all these goodies yesterday, from various sources - I am currently still admiring each and every item, and I will get to featuring/ swatching each product in subsequent entries to come this following week.  Everything is just AMAZING.

Just need to thank the following girls:

    • My gf Vince who came back from HK over the weekend for CP [Bioderma, Giorgio Armani, Shu Uemura]

    • Gwen for the beauty.com order and nars.com orders [Ecotools, NARS Holiday & Xmas items]

    • Audrey & Iris of the Shiseido team for the awesome & generous Maquillage, CDP and Ettusais goodies

    • Jerlaine for ordering from Benefit.com during the F&F period  [the gorgeous falsies!]

    • and myself for checking out LUSH yesterday - I am no stranger to LUSH, having been to various LUSH stores abroad and I have my regular faves...so I only picked up my fave Christmas body shampoo in Snow Fairy - I was a little surprised the store is small (but could be due to the amount of people inside who are clearly very excited for LUSH's return to SG) and I must say the prices are very reasonable and comparable to prices abroad.  The large bottle of Snow Fairy is about S$33.50 which is about the same as previous bottles I have used before.  I still have the bath bombs everywhere in my clothes drawers....well.....  It is nice to have Lush back in Sg!

My LUSH Recommendations in case anyone is interested:

    BIG Shampoo [Clarifying Shampoo]

Lemony Flutter [Rich cuticle hand cream]

Snow Fairy [Body and Hair shampoo]

HIWTK, Rock Star, Porridge [Bar Soaps]

I also love Yummy Yummy Yummy which has sadly been discontinued.  :(

Enjoy the following pictures!  I am soooooo excited!

Yay to the feative season, Nay to mega crowded and annoying shopping crowd.

Haul: Shiseido Sale 2011 [Shiseido White Lucent & Clé de Peau Products]

I probably won't have gone for the sale today, but I was in the area in the morning, and I wanted to see if there are any nice Shiseido skincare & Clé de Peau products which I could purchase at great savings.   Jerlaine and I stood in the queue for a short while, before we went into the main room where the products were laid out.

Because it was still rather early in the morning (we were there at 10.30 and the sale started 10am) most of the products were still plentiful...though I saw lots of women lugging huge bottles of shampoo and stuffing the CDP skincare products into their shopping bags.  At the rate they were grabbing the products, you would think this is the only chance they get to stock up on their skincare.

I also noticed that most of the makeup products were from discontinued range, and some were stuff which I already own, so I didn't go for any of the color makeup.

I saw the Shiseido White Lucent serum ($50 each) so I took one for myself.  I bought the two Clé de Peau skincare items for my mother cos she needed a toner and a face cream for night use.  The Clé de Peau balancing lotion is a whopping 400ml for $120, and the nourishing emulsion is $80.  I think she would really enjoy these products for a long time to come.

The next two Clé de Peau items were stuff I grabbed before I made payment... a coral pinky gloss ($40) and a neutral eyeshadow palette ($50). I also got several Shiseido stick foundations for my friends, so I didn't take pictures of those items.

All in all, I did good... I didn't go crazy at all, and stuck with what I had in mind.  :)

The sale will go on tomorrow, 17 Nov 10 - 8 pm, at the Shiseido building #12-01 (where the H&M is).

    Photos and swatches below:

Eye Color Quad in shade 20

Natural Browns.  Very silky creamy texture, and decent payoff.

    Lipgloss in 06  [unboxed]

    That's all!

I would expect the sale to run out of the skincare by tomorrow....what is available are lots of shiseido and maquillage compact foundations, lipsticks, and stick foundations (shades might be limited) and do note they are from the past collections/ launches.

I didn't see any of the newer foundation releases, and the latest shimmering cream eyeshadows.  Not a surprise there, obviously.

The majorica mascaras & tsubaki shampoo sets were very popular too, and half the price at Watsons.  There was also Aqualabel liquid and powder foundations (3 for $20, or 1 for $8).

    Hope this has been helpful!
