About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

How I Brighten Under My Eyes

    Hallo!

I thought it is timely to do an entry on how I 'conceal' my undereyes.... I don't have dark eye circles...but I do have some dullness under my eyes, as we do..when I am sleep deprived, and I look less than awake than usual.  I have recently gotten the very 'good' habit of actually putting the effort to do some undereye work.

This is just what I do for myself, and I am giving my thoughts on the products I will be using in this entry.  Hopefully this will be helpful to those who are looking for products in this category of makeup.

Here are the ingredients I need:

Undereye Setting Powders - I have two in my stash, one is a neutral shade, and one is slightly pinky.
I find that these powders are super fine, and contain micro-super tiny shimmer bits that brighten up under the eyes.  I use either one depending on my mood for the day.  I usually use a large fluffy eyeshadow brush to do the job.  Pick up the powder, tap excess into the cap, and then buff it lightly under my eyes.

Highly recommend both, though I think the Laura Mercier one would be more easily available.  The Benefit powderflage might be long discontinued already.  Anyway these powders are going to last me forever, so I am not worried about running out.

Did I mention the names of these products?

    Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder
    Benefit Powderflage

I also need to use some kind of a cream/ liquid highlighter.  My faves are the YSL Touche Eclat highlighter pens.  They give me enough coverage wthout feeling like an actual concealer, and subtly brightens up my undereye areas.  If you have more serious dark eye circles, you might want cover that first, and move on to this highlighter pen.

I use a mixture of 01 and 02, because one is a pinky shade, and one is a beigy shade.  I use both to brighten and neutralise any dullness at the same time.   The formula is lightweight, and feels so nice on the skin.

Sorry they look kind of gunky, but hey, I use them everyday, that's why.

These are the brushes I talked about earlier.  I don't have a particular fave, but I usually use this MAC 224, and a Ecotools large brush...I also have several other large fluffy brushes...but as long as they are fluffy enough, they serve the purpose.

    Further tips & tricks

I only do this whole little routine AFTER my bb cream and/or foundation.  This means you use less product on concealing/ brightening as the area would have been evened out by the base products already.  The less product you use, the better.

I also make sure that I moisturise under my eyes very well.  I use a creamy eye cream even in the day time... so the skin under my eyes is always well hydrated, and no fine lines will form and no product will settle into the lines.

Here are the steps - which are super easy, and I am sure many of you do the same too.

1 - slap on the YSL Touche Eclat I just draw quick strokes of both 01 and 02 under my eyes.

2 - use my fingertips to blend, I find this is the most gentle way to deal with the sensitive area.

This is how it looks like blended.

Pick up powder, and tap off the excess.  Make sure brush is properly loaded up with the powder.

Softly and lightly blend and buff under the eyes over the area where the Touche Eclat was applied.

    and done!

This routine is very long lasting, and stays on pretty well.

I hope this has been helpful and if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments below!

    Thanks for reading!

LOTD: Lancôme x Alber Elbaz Wide Eyes Eyeshadow Palette [Step by Step]

    Hi hi!

Just a LOTD entry featuring the new Lancôme x Alber Elbaz eyeshadow palette  and I will try to talk through what I did to create this look.  I took these pictures a week ago... so I hope I can still remember exactly what I did.

I have here the 'Wide Eyes' palette - it consists of five shades, a rather warm taupe themed palette.  The shimmers in some of these shades are simply beautiful, and creates a very dramatic smokey eyelook, depending on how you mix and match the colours.  I probably got slightly carried away with the application of these eyeshadows, and somehow ended up looking very heavily made up (according to me anyway), but I think I have tried to 'show off' the colors in this palette.

As the following pictures show, here's what I did:

    1. Apply lid color to my eyeslids - which I have already primed with NARS eyeshadow primer.

    2. Apply the main lid color (No 1) all over the lids.

    3. I also used a little of No 3 as a blending shade on the crease.

    4. I applied No 2 on the outer V of my eyelids.

    5. I used No 4 as a liner, to define the shape of the eyes.

    6. I used No 5 as a inner corner highlighter.

    7.  Slap on the lashs, fill in my brows.

    8.  I also followed the same steps under my eyes, using mainly No 2 to define the lower eyelids.

The completed look - please pardon my stray brow hairs.

    And an overall look:

    List of products used:

Face - Lancôme Mat Miracle Foundation, set with Lancôme Teint Miracle loose powder

Concealers - YSL Touche Eclat, Benefit Powerflage, Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage

Blush - Lancôme Blush Subtil Lace Nectar

Eyes - NARS Primer, Lancôme x Alber Elbaz Wide Eyes Eyeshadow Palette

Brows - Urban Decay Naked basics palette, Shu uemura Brow Manicure Ash Brown

Lips - Lancôme Rouge in Love 232M (in the first two pictures) and 357B in the third picture

    Lenses - Blincon (dark brown)

    Top - ASOS (oversized tee)

Nails - Lancôme Vernis in Love 154M Miss Coquelicot

Overall, I really enjoy this palette.  It offers great eyeshadow formulation, the shimmer colors are gorgeous and complex enough for the neutral shadows in this palette to look dramatic and interesting.   The pale irisdescent pink is prone to fall outs which you might have noticed so you might want to use it over a cream base.

The palette retails for S$90 if I remember correctly.  It will be available mid-june at Sephora.

Hope this overview and step by step has been useful!

    Updated Brows Routine using Eyeshadows

    Hi hi!

This is an updated eyebrow routine, something which I have been using for more than a month.  And I have been loving it.... This routine is something totally different from what I have been doing for years - which is my trusty Shu Uemura pencil..I wanted a stronger look, and when I went to Junry (at MAC Vivocity) recently to trim my brows, she showed me how to do it..which is exactly what I wanted to go for... that very strong, defined and thick eyebrows look.  I find that with a pair of fairly strong thick brows I can get away with very little else on my face...and also such brows will make me look younger.   Of course, I can't ever replicate her expert method, but its something which I have managed to replicate for myself and I shall share with you how I do it.

I am surprised that I actually love using eyeshadows for filling in my brows.  The matte shadows in the UD Naked Basics palette is perfect, it is a small palette, easy to hold in my hand as I do my brows, the big mirror also allows me to see what I am doing.  I use a MAC 212 short handled brush for doing the brows...it is a straight / square liner brush.  Finally I set my brows with a brow manicure/ mascara / gel thing from Shu Uemura in the shade ash brown.

A few points to note before we proceed:

My brow shape is really my own preference, I know some girls prefer a thinner brow shape, and I know also some people prefer to match their brows to their hair color.. for me, I kind of like the clash in the hair/eye/ brow colors.  Let me illustrate - I am quite fair, and my hair is super jet black.  So I can't possibly have matching black brows - which will be too harsh.  So my ideal brow color would be something quite light and ashy, so sort of match my overall skintone.  And I am usually wearing some sort of contact lenses, which are usually very very black in color, but in this set of pictures I am wearing brown lenses.

Also with this palette, you can adjust how dark or how light you want your brows to go.  In this tutorial, I have them on pretty dark, which means I used more black eyeshadow to fill in the brows.  If you want a lighter color, just use the medium matte brown in Faint.
I have also tried using the MAC Fuildline for brows in Redhead - that's a very warm light brown, and if I am in the mood for light brown brows, I also use that.  It is very long lasting and didn't budge at all through a hot and humid day.

So here's the palette and the brush -
I usually go back and forth between Faint and Crave, so mix and match.
I use Naked2 to do blending and neared the start of my brows cos there's where you don't want any harsh colors.

Here are the steps - I think they are very self-explanatory.  I apologise for the large fonts... didn't occur to me how clashing they look on here.  Opps.

I usually can draw longer and cleaner lines, but if you are still practising, shorter strokes might be easier.  Basically you want a very defined line for this outlining stage.

So now you have two parallel lines... slowly join them at the end of the brows.  As you can see, I don't really follow any RULES of the proportion, I just sort of go with my gut instinct and where the brows naturally taper at the end.

And the overall look - where brows and cheeks take the centre stage in this very clean look.  I have more details on this LOTD in a later entry.

What's your brow routine and fave brow products?  Please share!

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

LOTD: Festive Look with cle de peau Palette de Voyage [with Brows & Eyelook step by step!]

    Hi hi!

This is a look featuring the cle de peau Voyage de Palette which I mentioned in this entry here.  It is not often that you come across a palette with a specific brow powder, so I am throwing in a quick step by step of how I would fill in my brows.

I ended up with a smokey sparkly look and as I am looking at the pictures now, I realise that this palette really reminds me of the Chanel holiday, in particular the Harmonie du Soir quad - in terms of the bronze gold, pink and taupe shades.

Here is the color placement of everything I used:

and a swatch just to recap:

I only used the lighter of the brow powder to fill in my brows.   Please note that I have not professionally trimmed my brows in almost a year.  I just tweezed the stray hairs from time to time.  I prefer my brows full and relatively define, but with a soft color.  I like  that the brow powder in this palette is just ashy enough and doesn't contain any red tones which is important for brows defining.

    * this is by no means an indepth brow tutorial, I have done one before - link here!

    1. I used the angled brush to draw a line under the shape of my brows - this will form the basis of my brows.

    2. The line is drawn, and I will proceed to draw a parallel line at the top of where I want my brows to be.

    3. You see here, I am just filling in the area between the two lines I have drawn.

    4. Where the two lines meet at the arch, that's where I will sharpen the ends of the brow.

    and the eyelook -

    1. Apply brow color on the brow bone (I primed my eyelids with NARS primer).  The only shade in the palette which I am using is really a tad too dark for my browbone...but I do want some sheen there..hence I went ahead anyway.

    2. Apply the golden crease color.  I am glad this is the largest area of the palette, but I think this gold is my fave shade in the quad.  It is pigmented, and as you can see in the picture it contains very shiny gold bits.

    3. Apply the darkest brown bronze shade on the lids.  The color is easy to blend out, and I try to blend it into the gold...though I think some clear lines could still be seen.  Note that I used the same brush applicator throughout this eyelook.  It is soft enough for blending, and dense enough to pick up and apply the various shades.  When using one single brush for a look, I usually start by applying the lightest shade first.

    4. I dabbed a little of the pink shade in the inner lids.. this is controversial, some pple might not like it, thinking it might result in a tired eyes.. but I think it looks all neaten up when the liner and lips are on.  (I used a black liquid liner for the look, inside of using the dark brown liner shade).   I also skipped the mascara, cos I don't really use mascara... and I am using a pair of demi lashes from DUP (413).

Then I finished the look by dusting on the cheek colors and applying the lipstick.

My foundation routine - I am using the cle de peau silky creme foundation, cle de peau concealer, and La Mer powder to set.

Overall, this is a pricey palette, but you are getting quite a few goodies in side, and the colors though are not extraordinarily unique, you do get a variety of luxe textures and finish.  The brushes are of decent quality, and you can actually use them, if you are going to travel with it.    It is also a very elegant and luxe gift for that someone special if your life, I may add.   I know I will be popping this lipstick into my bag when I am going out tonight!

Hope this entry has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

MUFE Holiday 2012: Holodiam [Photos, Step by Step & Swatches]

    MAKE UP FOR EVER
has created a spectacular look to light up the year-end holidays with a burst of glitter that takes glam to the extreme! The HOLODIAM collection captures the brilliance of the spotlights and the bold, brash glamour of a woman who is not afraid to take center stage.

‘On the floor,’ she dramatizes her eyes. They come to life with a bewitching smoky black that glistens with subtle holographic highlights. She mixes the HOLODIAM POWDER like a deejay compiling a playlist. The glitter achieves a holographic effect thanks to a technological first: multifaceted pearlescent particles that reflect no fewer than three different colors depending on the refraction angle of the light. The result is an optical phenomenon, a pulsing vibration of intense, ever-changing colors for electrifying eyes infused with mystery. Color turns to light, black turns to glitter. Her cheekbones are accentuated with a simple blush, her lips with a nude champagne shade. And when she wants to take the look to the limit, limited edition false lashes sprinkled with fine golden glitter give her the ultimate glamorous, festive look.

    BEAUTY WITH VIBRANT SENSUALITY

The HOLODIAM collection is a unique celebration of fabulously glittering nights out. To complement the HOLODIAM POWDERS, a new set of FALSE EYELASHES sprinkled with golden glitter completes the HOLODIAM look. Magnifying the unique beauty of the woman whose eyes are adorned with these precious lashes, they catch the spotlight and radiate it outwards. Party lights glint off the iridescent shine of her eyelids, which seem to twinkle with the light of a thousand stars. The fine layer of gold that graces her lashes creates an intoxicating beauty that captivates everyone she meets.

Ettusais Reformulates Gel Top Coats [Swatches & A Step by Step Manicure]

    Available July 2012

Ettusais reformulated their popular quick drying clear top coat that creates glossy nails that look like gel nails done at a nail salon.  No UV light and no soak-off needed!

Retailing for $24 and contains 9ml of product.

    Product description:

    Creates a plumper, glossier finish

    Has a longer lasting finish

Dries smooth, even if base coat applied is uneven

    Dries quickly

Formulated with a natural treatment ingredient

    Fragrance-free

The Gel Top Coats has an adhesive polymer entwining, softening agrent that absorbs shock and a luster agent to provide shine.

NOTE: if you apply the topcoat before your color is completely dry, they may mix with the colors on your nails, resulting in an opaque (non-gel) look.  The product can be removed with a regular nail polish remover.

GEL COLOR TOP COAT (PK)  LIMITED EDITION!

Retailing for $24 and contains 9ml of product.

Natural pink nail color that creates glossy nails, that gives a healthy finish to your nails with the pink shade of Sakuragai.

Has all the same features of the original Gel Top Coat and formulated with a natural treatment ingredient.

NOTE: Shake before use, and use a base coat is recommended for a longer lasting finish.  You can remove it with a regular nail polish remover.

    My thoughts:

I had first tried out the regular gel topcoat a couple of weeks back, and I made the mistake of not letting my color dry completely before applying the topcoat.  This resulted in a rather dull (and def not gel like appearance of the topcoat). In this swatches, I let the color dry for a couple of minutes before apply the gel topcoat, and there was a tremendous difference.  So, definitely heed the advice given, and allow your nail color to dry first, before you apply the gel topcoat.  I found that it dries quite fast (not as fast as Seche Vite though) and it definitely is better at sealing in glittery nailpolish, and producing a very smooth surface.  (glittery nailpolish tends to eat up my Seche Vite topcoat, fyi).

A quick step by step manicure featuring both the gel topcoats:

Step One - Apply basecoat as recommended.

Step Two - apply a layer of Pink Gel Topcoat

It is a pink sheer creamy polish - neutralises a bit of my yellow-ed nails, giving it a natural healthy tinge.

Step Three - Apply a gold holographic nailpolish to the tips.

This does not have to be neat like a French Manicure.

    Just slap it on.

Step Four - Apply Clear Gel Topcoat

There you go, almost instant gel manicure at home!

Check out the bokeh effect of the holographic!   No photoshop here!

These gel topcoats are definitely useful to have in your stash.

    Highly recommended!

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!
