About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Shu Uemura Natural Volume Lashes [Comparisons & My Lash Collection]

Been wanting to try out the Shu Uemura Natural Volume Lashes everytime I see Joey wearing them in her looks.   And so yesterday, I bought a pair for myself, and if I like them enough, I will stock up on these lashes somewhere [most likely HK, where they are a lot cheaper].

My only gripe about these lashes is that the base is kind of stiff, and thick...and when you are used to the super soft and fine lashes [like my Ardel or Cosmos ones] these can take some getting used to.   But I really dig the wispiness of the hairs on the Shu lashes, even though they are criss cross -and not my fave type of lashes, the fine hairs makes it pretty enough for me to want to wear them.  And they look really great from the side -- they don't look like visor caps, and just look like naturally full lashes.

Here's how they look like on:

And some comparisons of Natural Volume to my other similar lashes....it does look 'natural' compared to the rest!

I have been collecting Shu Uemura lashes for years and years, and have quite a stash of them, I seldom wear them but I like to keep them.

My faves are Smokey Layers, Partial Flare, Black V, Black Slant.  I also like the Mini Khaki, Mini Rainbow for a pop of color on  the outer corners of my eyes.  Some are LE, and I have 4 or 5 boxes of the LE designs - kind of like to stock up, in case they become super hard to find.

    Natural Volume vs Smokey Layers

*I always cut smokey layers in half, and use them as outer corner lashes, more comfy to wear.

    Natural Volume vs Partial Flare

These look the same, except of course the partial ones are 4 separate little pieces.

Natural Volume vs Black Leather [LE]

If you like the black leather, there is the 'normal' version which is permanent, and it's called Black Luxe.  Same hair design.

These are the Magical Windfalls [LE] Takano for Shu Uemura ones.

    super cute.

And my stuffed drawer of Shu Uemura lashes -- not quite nicely displayed like the Tokyo Lash Bar -- but I really do love my collection of Shu lashes.  :)

I have done many looks with these lashes before, click the following for the lash LOTDs if you have missed them previously:

LOTD: Smokey Winged Eyeliner [Plus Sneak Peek Backstage @ AFF]

    Hi hi,

We spent a very fruitful and exciting afternoon with the Shu Uemura & Redken team today at the Audi Fashion Festival.  Got a chance to see the makeup and hair artistes in action backstage, took loads of pictures, played with the Shu Uemura lashes - which if you have read my blog from years back - would know I am a huge fan and collector of - and then watched the actual presentation itself, called the Shapes & Shadows at the Tent itself at Ngee Ann City.

We got a preview at a new product from Shu Uemura - I am sooo excited, but will save that for a later entry this week.

Shall show my LOTD for today, and also show some highlights and sneak preview of entries to come -- It is loosely based on Lisa Eldridge's video of the same title [Smokey Winged Eyeliner].

    All products used:

Foundation - Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, Shu Uemura UV Mousse Base in Beige, Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk foundation, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

Cheeks - MAC Cheeky Bronze, Tarte Tipsy

Lips - Chanel Extrait De Gloss in Genie

Eyes - UDPP, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense in Pulp Fiction, Bobbi Brown Eyeshadow in After Hours

Liners - Heavy Rotation liquid liner, Bobbi Brown Black Caviar Ink gel cream

Lashes - Clinique Lower Lash Mascara, Shu Uemura Smokey Layers

These lashes will be part of the latest additions to the Shu Uemura's Tokyo Lash Bar this coming JULY.

Backstage pictures of the makeup team, I was drooling at the array of Shu Uemura lashes and eyeshadows and a gazillion other goodies all laid out.

    Serious makeup porn going on.

And I will be featuring this new product from Shu Uemura this week.  You probably can already tell what it is, if you saw my tweets.  :)

We also got to play with the Shu Uemura lashes backstage, and I helped Chantana and Sara put on their partial lashes!  :)

If you want to see lotsa more pictures from the Shapes & Shadow presentation,

do check out my FB album, the public link to the album is HERE.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Extreme Dramatic Artistic Lashes feat. Shu Uemura False Lashes

Bought some cool lashes today at Shu Uemura.. and decided to have some fun with my lashes.

Here is a group picture:  I already own those in the boxes, and the super long strip one is from the Shu latest collection.

This long single strip is meant for you to cut into your desired lengths.  It is very fine, and well crafted.  Retails for $42 at Shu Uemura ION store, and available at all Shu Uemura counters from next month.

Check out Temptalia's product information on this collection here.

So...my sister and I came home and played with this fun multi-colored lashes.

    Here is her version:

She pasted it on her upper lahes. over her regular lashes. I think it is kind of fun to see the colors from the top view.

    And for my version:

I put on 3 pairs of lashes to achieve this look.  Sounds crazy, but the end result is super cool.

The first pair is my regular ones which I need for length and volume.

The second pair is for the outer corner.  It has green and black hairs, and sort of slant one side.  (Mini Kaki)

The last pair if less than 0.5cm wide, it is multi colored, and also kind of spiky.  (Primal Mix Eyelashes)

    Without flash:

This is definitely something I would pull off for a night out, or just what the heck... anytime I want!
