About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. LOTD: Autumn Browns with Stila's Living the Life in Laguna Palette

    Hi hi

I had gotten ready to go out....for no reason at all...and then by the time I am done, I didn't feel like going anyway, and ended up nearby my house for a drink and quick supermarket run.  And I managed to give myself an express manicure at the coffee joint, so that was quite productive! Hahaha.

I also did a little shopping around my foundation drawers (yes, more than one drawer!) and to my horror, I can't find my Chanel Vita Lumiere Aqua at the moment!  So I decided to use Guerlain Lingerie de Peau instead.  And I think I have re-discovered my liking for it.  The foundation never really stood out to me, it was just nice, another regular foundation in my opinion [though Temptalia recently reviewed and gave it an A+].

I used over with over a thin layer of Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream...maybe that's why the foundation looks better on top.   I set this combination off with my Chanel Translucent Loose Powder...and I am quite liking the overall finish.  It is soft, and gives me an overall subtle glowy finish.

I used the Stila Living the Life in Laguna palette, and you can also see this product in action HERE at A Model Recommends.

All products used will be listed at the end of this entry.

    All products used:

Foundation - Missha BB Cream (thin layer), Guerlain Lingerie de Peau (thin layer), Chanel Translucent Loose Powder 10 Limpide

Concealers - Lancôme Rénergie Eye Multiple Action (undereyes - MUST HAVE PRODUCT!), Cle de Peau stick concealer (for spots)

Eyes - UDPP, Stila Living the Life in Laguna Palette (I used the coppery red on lids, and  the dark brown on crease), MAC Dazzlelight e/s on brow bone, MAC Seedy Pink on inner corners, Urban Decay 24/7 pencil liner RockStar

Cheeks - MUFE Matte Bronzer, Guerlain Blush Noire G

Lips - Revlon Blush Nude (Love the color, but it's kinda drying on my lips, I never touch up again with this lipstick when I am outta the house)

    LOTD: Stila's Natural Eyes Palette

    Hi hi,

Another 'detailed' LOTD where I talk you through the products which I am using in this entry.

Instead of another neutral brownish eye makeup look using this palette, I went for a greyish dark smokey eyes, with classic nude lips.  You can definitely re-create this look with any another brand of eyeshadows... since the colors here aren't terribly unique anyway.  If you have the Naked palette, all the colors are in that palette too.

    Eyeshadows:

I first primed my eyes with UDPP, and then I dusted some of the blending colors (indicated in the picture below) on my crease to build a contour shade.  Then I used a tapered brush (MAC 226) to apply and blend the 'lids' shade all over the lids.  I blended this quite high up, and as this color blends upwards, it goes into the matte blending shade, so this gives you some gradient of colors, and no harsh lines.  To deepen the look, I used the matte black shade on the outer corners of the eyes.

    Liners:

I heavily rimmed my eyes with Stila's Smugepot in Golden Noir, and finished off with two coats of mascara for lower lashes.  I used rather natural false lashes on my upper lids, because since the eyeshadows are already quite dark, any 'big lashes' will not show too much.  I just wanted some definition to my eyes.  I also cleaned up around the eyes by dusting away any fallout, and using NARS Nico to subtly highlight around the eyes area.

Here are the colors I used:

    Close up of eyelook

    Foundation/ Cheeks:

I used mainly Clarins face products in this LOTD.

I wanted to create a very flawless and slightly glowy look, and  I didn't want any blushes to compete with the eyelook.  I used Clarins Beauty Flash Balm as a base - which tightened my skin just a little, and make it look smoother, followed my Clarins Skin Illusion foundation in 104.  I used my usual concealers (Shu Uemura pro gel cealer, and MAC Prep+Prime highlighter) to hide away any imperfections.

I also did not want to look too bare and pale, so I dusted Clarins Mosaique bronzer on my forehead, sides of my face and also lightly on my chin.  This is turning out to be one of my absolute staples, whether it's summer or rainy, regardless the season.  I then used Dior's Aurora bronzer on my cheeks for some natural color.  I also used Giorgio Armani Micro-Fil light pink powder as a glowy highlight just at the top of my cheeks.  I am falling in love with this loose powder, it gives just the most subtle and glowy pearlescent finish to your skin.  It is simply divine.

    Lips:

I applied MUFE Rouge Artist Intense lipstick in #22 which is a creamy matte nude color directly from the tube, and then I used my fingers to dab and blend out the color.  I didn't really like the matte effect, so I slapped on some Clarins Color Quench Lip Balm 01 over it.  It adds moisture and some sparkle to the lip color without changing the original color of the MUFE lipstick.

Overall, this is really a classic smokey eyes that is easy to create in a short time.  The application and blending of the eyeshadows is really simple and effortless... I have never been into complicated placement of colors, often preferring to blend one main color all over my lids, and pop some blending and/ or outer colors if I am feeling a little fancy.  Other than that, with just a dense fluffy brush, and a beautiful shade, you can pretty much do anything you want with just simple tools and skills.  Practice makes perfect (not saying that I am, but you get the drift) and you just find out along the way what works for your eyeshape and what type of look you want to achieve.

    Summary of all products used:

Base: Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, Clarins Skin Illusion liquid foundation, Ettusais Mineral Loose Powder

Concealers: MAC Prep+Prime highlight, Shu Uemura Pro Gel Cealer (my HG concealer for the past few months)

Cheeks: Clarins Mosaique Bronzer, Dior Aurora, GA Micro-fil Light Pink Loose Powder

Lips: MUFE Rouge Artist Intense #22, Clarins Color Quench Lip Balm 01

Eyes: Stila Natural Eyes Palette, Stila Smudge Pot Golden Noir

Stila In The Light Palette [Swatches]

    Hi hi!

Again, ordered this from Michelle's recent Sephora spree, and I kind of zoomed in on this palette the second I knew of the Sephora spree.  It is only USD39 for the 10 eyeshadows, one eyeliner, and all the colors are of great quality and payoff.  I have also seen several YT videos and reviews of this palette, so I guess somehow it has stayed on my mind ever since then.

While swatching, I noticed the shimmery shades are prone to some fallout, so you defnitely need to pat on the color, and also use a creamy base to help the eyeshadow stick to your lids.

I love specially all the shimmery rich brown shades in this palete!

    From the Sephora website:

In The Light Palette ($118 Value) USD$39
    What it is:
A beautiful palette consisting of 10 natural Eye Shadow shades (including the best-selling shade Kitten) and a limited-edition Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner.

    What it does:
The new In The Light Palette is a beautiful collection of Stila's award-winning Eye Shadows in wearable, neutral shades for every skintone that can be worn wet or dry. The palette also includes an exclusive Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Damsel, a matte chocolate brown, and an eight-page lookbook with detailed how-to tips and tricks.

    This set contains:
    - 10 x 0.49 oz Eye Shadows in Bare (matte ivory), Kitten (shimmering nude pink), Bliss (matte nude), Sunset (copper shimmer), Sandstone (matte neutral brown), Champagne (pale gold shimmer), Gilded Gold (bronze with gold shimmer), Luster (deep gray with gold shimmer), Night Sky (slate blue with silver shimmer), Ebony (matte black)
    - 0.01 oz Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Damsel (matte chocolate brown)

    Lots of photos and swatches:

This palette is simply gorgeous!  :)

Stila 'Living the live in Laguna' Palette [Swatches]

Ordered this Stila palette from Michelle's recent Sephora spree!

    From the Sephora Website

"Living the Life in Laguna - Collectible Beach Palette No. 5 ($62 Value) USD$14
    What it is:
A collection of four Stila eye shadows, cheek color, and bronzer in a chic, mirrored palette complete with a "how-to" face chart.

    What it does:
An idyllic seaside retreat, Laguna Beach features seven miles of sandy beaches, rolling canyons, and a picturesque Pacific coastline. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Laguna has a uniquely laid-back atmosphere. The breathtaking bluffs, stunning sunsets, and bohemian lifestyle serve as a source of inspiration for fashionista Ali, who mixes the most up-to-the-minute fashion trends with the hippy-chic Laguna vibe. The Living the Life in Laguna palette channels the organic beauty of this cultural beach town and contains four coastal inspired eye shadow shades, a cheek color, and a bronzer that's perfect for creating for a natural California glow.

    This set contains:
    - 4 x 0.15 oz Eye Shadows in San Dollar, Sunset, Cove, Bonfire
    - 0.11 oz Cheek Color in Seashell
    - 0.11 oz Bronzing Powder in Pacific Coast Highway"

Needless to say, this is limited edition, and seems like it is only available online (I am assuming Sephora and Stilacosmetics.com).

The colors are very easy to wear, and I like the whole compact, and it's only USD$14.  You can't go wrong with these palettes.  I only own this palette so far, and I think I much prefer a blush and eyeshadow combination, rather than eyeshadows and cream blush/ gloss combo.

The two cheek colors are very very light, and I don't think I can wear them on their own... most likely useful for blending out blushes, or as some highlighting glow perhaps.  Still, pretty and wearable shades on my skintone.  The four eyeshadows are pigmented, especially the pink one, I didn't expect the color to show up true to the pan... but it did.   :)

Great palette for on the go/ travel.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

LOTD & OOTD: Celebrating with the Girls

    Hi hi,

Just a quick entry to show you my MU and outfit when I went out for dinner and hanging around with the girls (my sister and gf last night).  It was the latter's bday, we watched SATC 2, so hence the 'special' dedicated entry.  :)

Let's get on with the LOTD:  I used only one eyeshadow in terms of color, which is nothing revoluntionary if you are familiar with my LOTDs by now.

    Foundation ---

SANA Pore Putty Base, Maquillage long lasting stick foundation, MUFE Concealer palette no1, La Mer Powder  (I used MAC 109 to apply and blend)

    Cheeks ---

NARS Nico, Sin and Mac Sculpt & Shape powder

    Lips ---

OCC Lip Tar in Grandma, and a little of MAC's Nice Mix Up tri colored lipglass

    Eyes ---

Stila's Dulce Luche (?) e/s, inuovi Platinum (applied and blended using MAC 222 brush)

    Liner & Lashes ---

Palz & Shu Uemura Lashes (yup it is 2 pairs, but I didn't overlap the lashes, I was kind of extending the 'width' to get the exact measurement and volume I wanted to accentuate my eyes)

    MAC Blackline

    YSL Faux Cils

    And the OOTD:

Black Lace Tee from Warehouse (sz 12, sale price $59)

Grey Tank from FCUK underneath (from years ago)

'Skinny' jeans from River Island (sz 14, sale price $55)

    Pink Heels (New Look)

Poser Panasonic Headphones courtesy of the Bro who helped to take this pic for me  LOL

And a pic of us goofing about:

and we bought this for the gf.

Quick thoughts about SATC2? If you want to compare it to the TV series, of course, the TV series is better.  It would be like comparing apples and oranges.  Totally different.  I guess critics who are quick to dismiss this movie should prolly realise that the movie is really just entertaining, fluffy, exaggerated, totally fictional.  I enjoyed the movie for all its entertainment value, and overdose of decadence and pretense, and if you take it in that light, then relax, and just enjoy the show.

I need to get to work (which is why I am up so early)..... and well, technically holidays have started, but why is it that I feeel a sense of dread looming ahead?

I will be posting the FASIO eyeshadow giveaway winner later today.

That's all, and thanks for reading.

LOTD, Little Haul, Rambling on and on...

Hi! Lotsa of things to cover in this entry, so bear with me:

I got one more lip pencil from the MAC Too Fabulous collection, which is this baby pink color.  I think this is a great base to have under pink lipsticks, thanks to lissasioux, who mentioned it would go great with the very cream YSL RV in #19... and so I was sold on it.

On Saturday, I also got a new brush, this reminds me of the Louis Young foundation brush... and I think Amy (purplio) might be interested.  It is called No2., and it is a pointy synthetic brush.  I haven't washed it yet---- will post updates on this brush soon.  I also put it next to some of my brushes, to get an idea of the size.

It retails for S$25.  I don't think I have seen this brush at Palz before, I think it might be new.

I am trying out this concealer palette which Liana gave me recently.  It feels very smooth, and it comes with a little pan of powder to set your concealer.  I think this is perfect for bringing out for touch-ups when you are out the whole day.

I will do a more detailed review entry later on.

And random... but this what happened to my NARS Laguna when it dropped at work a few weeks ago.  I am just glad it didn't smash into smitherreeeens.  Just need to be careful and store it flat.

Well, anyway, in today's LOTD, I used mainly the Stila Eyeshadow (La Douce) which Kas gave me this week.  It is a nice olive brown/ green color, and grea for all over the lids color.  It blends up into the crease very nicely and smoothly.

On my cheeks:  NARS Laguna, NARS Nico, and NARS Mata Hari

Lips: In Synch, and Revlon's Pink Pout

And the brother makes a cameo in this entry!

We were going out to watch AIW - 3D.  Which is so fun to watch, and reminded us of all the Halloweeen madness from last year, esp the Red Queen and Mad Hatter.  Remember my Queen of Hearts LOTD?

That's about it, and thanks for reading!!

P/S:  There might be one more giveaway this week.  Keep posted.

    Amazing Birthday Pressies, LOVES!!!

Woot!  Not exactly a haul entry, but since my birthday is coming up, ahem* next week.... and I have been receiving some fantastic awesome presents from my pals --- remember the camera which I got over the weekend?

So when I met Kas yesterday, she passed me something... I didn't open the contents in front of her... but when I saw what's inside later on that night, I literally squealed, in delight and laughter!  Those of you who know about my Daiso incident... when you see the present, you know what I mean.

So, BIG Thanks to KAS!! And her birthday is 2 days after mine!  Still plotting to get her away from her class... so she can join the outing!  LOL.

L'ocitane Honey of Lemon EDT (LE) cos it contains shimmer~  I love this smell.  It is so cosy, and well, honey!  I am soooo going to get the full size bottle.  And the container is so bling and stylish!  I am going to use this to carry my everyday perfume about when I run out of the Honey of Lemon.

    The Daiso stickers!

STILA eyeshadow in la douce - a gold brown olive color.  LOVES!

And the day before, one of my besties gave me this watch....she knows how much I like skull stuff, and she hunted everywhere looking for a skull watch, cos she noticed me not wearing my Toy Factory skull watch anymore... so yea, she came over my place, made me close my eyes, and strapped on the watch on my wrist.  It is very manly, and I like the size of it!

I am sooooooo happy to receive all these goodies, and I am also very very grateful to have made such fab friends (not just because they have such good and generous tastes)  but really, the sincerity, the warmth, is priceless.  :) You all mean a lot to me... So, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
