About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Meet my Alexander Wang Fumo Large Wristlet

    Hi hi

During the recent, I think it was the Friends and Family sale at shopbop... or was it the Black Friday sale... I can't rememeber.. but anyhow..... there was a 20% off almost everything at Shopbop - and usually the 20% discount doesn't apply to most labels in their designer boutique..but obviously this time, Alexander Wang is included in the sale, and I took the chance to order the Fumo Large Wristlet which I have been half eyeing whenever I browse the site.

The Fumo wristlet is exactly the kind of wallet/ purse situation I live in... It is big enough for cash, coins, stacks of random cards, and you can hold it like a purse... I am not really a serious wallet person.. I never keep all my cards neatly into slots, I never arrange my cash by denominations etc etc... I just chuck everything inside.  Hence you might have noticed that all past purses I featured are all made for my chucking purposes.

I also noted that the Fumo wristlet is the matching accessory to my Rocco bag (which I really need to bring in to the Bag Spa for a treat) so that's even more reason that I should own it...
I love the leather, and how sturdy it feels.

The wristlet retails for USD198 (before discount)  Link here!

    Description -

Wrinkled leather lends a retro, favorite-wallet look to this Alexander Wang wrislet, which has antiqued hardware and 2 outside zip pockets. An industrial-style stud accents the removable wrist strap. The lined interior houses a patch pocket and a divider with a main slot and 4 card slots.

    Leather: Lambskin.
    Imported.

There are some slots in the middle of the wrislet, if I do feel organised enough to put my cards there (so far, not happening yet).

Here's an idea of the size in relation to my hand.  I can also fit my iphone into the wristlet, another plus.

    Love my new purse!

Hope this entry is helpful, and thank you for reading!

Shopbop Haul: Elizabeth & James [The Fairfax Shades]

    Hi!

I love to order eyewear and bags from Shopbop.  They really have the best accessories, and I have never been disappointed with any of my shopbop haul.  And I love shades, even though I might not wear them on a daily basis.  I am really into black shades, more so than the brown ones.  I was toying with the idea of the Prada baroque ones... but... I think in the end, the Fairfax won me over.  This retails for USD185.  Don't ask me if there is any retailers in Singapore selling this... cos I didn't find out, and I didn't know.

Elizabeth and James, in case you aren't aware, are the siblings to the Olsen twins, and this is their clothing and accessories label (in addition to The Row, if I am not wrong).  I love that it is not a pair of shades that yell its brand.. but if you know, you know.

Love the cat eye shaped, and the thin golden arms of the shades.  And I love how the name and brand is carved discreetly into the frame of the shades.

It seems to fit a little loosely on my face.. will get to adjusting it when I have the chance to.

Meanwhile, enjoy the beautiful pictures..of the shades. :)

for details on this LOTD, click here here here

some pictures I took with my iphone the day I received them

and I immediately tried them on.

they seem like the kind of shades that go perfectly well with no makeup, and red lips.

    Yay!

I have done a eyewear collection a few years back..

Would you like to see an updated eyewear collection entry?  Lemme know!

    Thanks for reading!

Shopbop Haul: House of Harlow Shades

I placed a shopbop order recently, because my brother wants me to get a pair of shades for him (he wanted to replace his broken black Ray Bans aviator) and soooooo I realised I still have this pair of shades in my shopping cart (darn those that remember what you half-heartedly added from previous window shopping moments) ----- so since it is still in my cart, and it is still in stock, I figure, it must meant to be!

This House of Harlow shades (USD138) is oversized, and trust me, it makes my HUGE ROUND fat face looks substantially smaller (and I must confess my camera angle makes my face look sharper than it really is -- no I didn't lose weight).

I like that the shape of the frame is not really round, and it looks quite angular too, but not totally cat-eyed shape.   And the 'arms' of the shades is the main detail of this pair of shades, with the tilt and dip.  I also like the dark grey color of the frames, something unique in my eyewear collection.

I think this particular model is now OOS on shopbop already.

This is my brother's happy purchase - he saved up for his shades.

    Classic black aviators, USD139

Over the weekend, I went to see a few great shows, collages below:

The Dreams & Reality - masterpieces from the Musee D'Orsay - really really worth a visit! :)

I had a work thing going on at the Chingay Parade over Fri and Sat.. had an all access pass, which allows me to sit wherever I wanted, and also backstage glimpses of the whole great show.  Tiring, but fun.  :)

Haul: I Love to Dress up my iPhone!

I am one of those people [and many of you too I think] who like to switch up phone covers from time to time.  I prefer these rubbery/ silicon type, because they are easy to slip on and out without much effort, doesn't cause any scratches [those hard casing are quite a pain to get off, and I always think the sides of the phone will be scratched if you aren't careful].  Besides these rubbery casings give my phone some friction and grip, so my phone doesn't just 'slip' out of my hands.   Plus if I drop my phone, the rubbery casing absorbs the shock too.

The first is a hot pink Crocs Adrina cover [S$17.95 at Crocs stores].  I really like  the design of this -- have the matching shoes too.  It is really solid despite the jelly like appearance.  I have a  protector at the back of my phone too, so I am not worried about the 'holes' of this cover exposing my phone to potential scratchy situations.

The next one is a Marc Jacobs cover - which I ordered from Shopbop for USD38.  I like the panther motif of the cover, and it is just something quite fun to have.  It is really quite bad cos I always browse shopbop time to time on the lookout for new iphone cases!  Right now I have my eyes set on two more....but I think I shall wait a bit before I make up my mind!

This is the artist credits behind the motif of the MJ phone case.

I really like the front of the casing to be as 'shallow' as possible, as shown in this pic below.  It doesn't get in the way of my gaming action.

As compared to this one that really 'frames' the perimeter of the phone case [this is the one with the white lips motif]

My little stash of phone casings so far.

I know it is a splurge to buy these designer rubber accessories, but I think it is totally worth it,because I am always on my phone, holding it, using it, these covers do a good job of making sure my phone doesn't fall apart!  And they are also an extension of my style/ outfit/ personality, so yup, I think I will continue to buy more when I see new designs.  :)

That's all and thanks for looking!

Shopbop Haul: Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang & CK

Yes, dear reader, I have purchased the iphone4 case even before I got the darn phone.  Call me insane!  But I know when I am getting my new phone -- if you have seen my tweets, it's all I complain about (on some days) -- on the 10 April.  That's when I can start a new phone plan with the tel-co without having to pay for anything.  I have not been using my BB for the past 2 weeks, and revert to using my old iphone3GS (without any data plan, so tweeting and emailing on the go is a no no).

I will be one of those crazy people who will purchase these cool chic phone cases just cos they look cute.  And I ain't even a fan of wrapping my gadgets in any form of protective casing -- all my previous mobile cells have been disfigured beyond anything because I don't use any phone case or cover.  And for this Marc by Marc Jacobs case, I am willing to sacrifice some discomfort and use it 'protect' my forthcoming phone.  A long time back, I was eyeing the McQueen skull print iphone4 case, but it has since disappeared from the Net-a-porter site, which is probably just as well for me.

    Close up pictures:

    (This is USD32)

I like how the lips motif and logo is slightly raised from the case itself.

And next, is a T by Alexander Wang long tank dress, this is great for layering, just a simple long lean jersey dress with asymmetrical hem.  It costs USD130.

This crew-neck dress features a scoop back and an asymmetrical hem. 1" straps.

    Some close ups:

Here is how the dress looks like on the model, who is 178cm tall according to the site description, so I think more or less the dress will fall the same length on me.  If only I am as skinny as her.

And lastly, on that day I placed the order (on Sunday night, and the order arrived Thursday evening), there was a 20 or 25% off CK underwear, so I took the chance to buy one more CK bra, since I really like those I am wearing most of the time.   Price before discount is USD44.

That's all.  I love shopping at shopbop. The free international 3 days shipping is amazing, they have great selection, and sometimes you find really good deals.  I always pop by to see what's new and what's on offer.

    Thanks for looking!

Haul: Shopbop.com (Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Juicy Couture!)

So this was supposed to be delivered last Thursday, and I didn't realise til Sunday morning, and called DHL to send it over again this morning.  This is my first package to arrive since the Black Friday weekend online shopping frenzy.  As you might know, I love to shop at shopbop.com -- they have free international shipping, prices are competitive and lotsa brands.  I didn't want to bother with vpost, and only went to websites that offer free international shipping.

The promo they had was the BIGEVENT where every $250 gets you $50 off each order, up til $500 off a $1500 order.    So I ordered about US$300 worth of stuff, and had $50 deducted.

The main thing was that I wanted to get some CK bras --- which you can try on at our local stores that sell CK bras -- note down the model number, or the fitting you like, and then order at shopbop... cos... it is just cheaper.  An average CK bra here is S$99-S$119, but at shopbop, I paid USD$30--US$40 for each.  One of them might be around USD$24 cos there was some price reduction going on certain models.

I got three bras, and in all modesty's sake, I shall show only very close up pics -- I tried, and they all fit me perfectly just like in the stores.

    scoop neck push up

    X cotton racer back

this was on sale, I think

    perfectly fit T shirt bra

super comfy -- like the straps, very 'firm'

I got a MJ shopping bag (USD$58) and this is the item which allowed me to get the $50 off... so I guess technically I saved US$50 on this bag?

It is retailing for S$120 nett in stores currently.

It is quite big, and made of very soft nylon material which you can easily fold and put into your handbag.

And lastly, I just wanted a new everyday bag, one sturdy enough if I choose to dump my computer inside.

This Juicy Couture bag (USD$148) caught my eye, because it is not immediately obvious that it is a Juicy Couture bag.

(read: no funky tacky loud logo, and no dangling charms like their velour bowling bags)

It is a dark green with peacock feathers print and ruched all over.

And the inside of the bag is too cute, with the bright background and Old English font of the brand name.

Maybe I can do an updated what's in my bag entry with this new bag soon.

That's all!  Online shopping is very addictive!  Expect more hauls coming this week and next! :)  They don't call it black friday for nothing!

    Thanks for looking!

Haul! No Makeup, but Prada & Alexander Wang

    Hi hi!

I am back from Hong Kong, and what better way to get into the blogging 'scene' with a few haul entries!  I will just be showing some of the more interesting stuff which I got.   :)

First is a Prada studded purse which I bought in Hong Kong.  It is so totally my style, if you read this blog long enough and/ or familiar with my 'style' and what I like. It was on sale, and the price was right, so I got it!  Love the  kick ass studs, and I just love the quirky, rock chic side of Prada's design more so than their girly pretty types.

Then, the next item I got was from shopbop.com and I was distracted while trying to pack my HK luggage, and somehow, ended up buying these two Alexander Wang white tees.  Wang is known for his edgy, somewhat masculine womenswear designs, and his fashion shows are renowned as being a highlight of New York Fashion Week. (wikipedia)

I think his most iconic design is the classic white tee, very sleek and clean tailoring lines. Shopbop ships for free internationally with US$100 and above order, and the item arrives in THREE days.  I have ordered from shopbop before, and they never fail me in this area.  Amazing shipping service.

The material of the tee is the softest, flowy thing.  It is sheer, and best layered with a cami or tank.  And since I live in my tees most of the time, I think these are a worthwhile investment.    :)

Yup, that's all for this little entry.  What's your wardrobe staple?
