About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

U.S. Goodies From under-twenty20 Blogshop (Urban Decay, Tarte, Maybelline...)

    Hi hi,

I am quite excited to share with you this Singapore-based makeup blogshop called under-twenty20.  This is because they sell many US makeup brands at, well, less than S$20 dollars.

Last week, yippy2910 who set up under-twenty20, sent these products to me for consideration.  And I was like, why not, because we all want to have alternative places to shop for makeup which are not available in SG, and at attractive prices too (because massive sprees don't come by very often and can take longer for everything to arrive).

    For example:

    (prices include normal postage)

    Tarte liquid foundation S$20

One single Urban Decay eyeshadow is S$15

Maybelline mascara (including those you can't find in sg) S$10 - 12

Other brands like Rimmel, Mario Bedascu, Milani, Loreal HIP products and POP/ Pixi products are also available.

You can check out under-twenty20 for other terms and conditions, as well as any other queries you have.  Or tell them what other brands you want them to carry in their shop!

Here is a closer look at each item -- all items came in original sealed packaging --- I misplaced the UD eyeshadow box last night, couldn't find it this morning.

For more product information, please refer to the website!

    Tarte Re-create foundation S$20

    02 Ivory

I think it matches me, though it's hard to tell, because I just woke up and my skin is a little reddish.

Anyhow.. I have darker/ lighter foundations to mix with to get my matching shade, if necessary.

Maybelline DEFINE A LASH Mascara S$10

I have used this before a couple of years back, if you refer to LOTD entries from then, it is often listed in the products used.

Check out the label, it is made in US -- our Maybelline mascaras sold here are often made in China and more expensive at that!

RIMMEL lip plumping gloss. S$3.50 each.

And lastly, Urban Decay eyeshadow in VERT.  S$15 each.

Vert is not sold in our Sephora stores currently.

It is available in the skull palette which I have, but that palette is not available currently.

As I mentioned earlier, under-twenty20 stocks a pretty decent range of products, the LOREAL HIP range, which I know many of you are crazy about --- even have the paint sticks and jelly balm which our Watsons don't carry.

Regis also posted an entry featuring this cool blogshop, and she has a giveaway promotion thing going on, so if you are interested, do check out her entry too! CLICK HERE to read and take part.

That's all, and I hope you find this helpful.

    Thanks for looking!

ps Products featured were given to me for consideration.  All opinions here are my own honest ones.

    Quick LOTD

I was deliberating whether to post this, because the picture quality is really crappy, no macro shots, no lighting adjustments, because my digi camera is away on loan with my sister.

But I like this natural look, and I used most of the new stuff which I acquired recently. I shall mention product names anyway, not that you can see the colors, because this looks like any of the 821903891083 neutral looks which I do.

    Cheeks: MAC Dollymix

Eyes: MAC Patina on the lids/crease, and inuovi's Platinum e/s on brow bone. Stila's 24kt smudge pot on upper lids, and MAC Powersurge pencil on lower lids.

    Lips: Rimmel's Airy Fairy lipstick

    Pic taken with macbook cam

    Overview: Liquid Foundations

    Hi Hi!

Just a quick entry on liquid foundations.  I started using them when I wanted more coverage. Personally I find that I need to touch up my foundation when I used to be a 2-way cake user (BTW my fave is the DIOR Extreme Fit power foundation).  So... when I make the big switch to Liquid Foundations (prolly the same time I bought the MAc 187 brush), I bought MAC Studio Fix Fluid.

Note that this is not in any way a full review of every single foundation.  I am just giving my opinions of each one in terms of their texture and durability.

    Here is a group picture:

*note that in my last few posts, pics are taken with my lousy iphone camera--- it's just much easier to upload without compromising

too much on quality to my amatuer eyes.

    From L to R:

Silky Girl Skin Perfect spf30++ 01 Light: I like this, but something about the tone doesn't suit my face, so I mix this when I am using the Maybelline foundation. Super cheap, and great as a everyday foundation.

DIOR Extreme Fit spf15++ 020: My fave foundation. Color is perfect for me.  This is an empty bottle, but I have a brand new bottle which I bought at the airport duty free ($56 duty free?)  I just LOVE Dior foundations.  But I have been rotating my foundations so I am not opening the new one yet.

MUFE HD Foundation in 120: ARGH.  Everything about this foundation is perfect, except the color, as you all know. So usually my sis uses this foundation if she is doing her MU at home.  But I mix the studio sculpt and now it is OK.  Very lasting too.  Definitely will get one in my correct shade when this runs out. Seriously, you need the tiniest amount of this.

MAC Studio Fix Fluid NC15 spf 15: Great basic foundation. Great color. Easy to blend, and buildable coverage.  :)

Maybelline Pure Fluid Mineral 020 Beige Eclat spf18:  I also have a backup of this.  But there is so much left in this bottle.  LOVE how it blends.  Not the longest lasting though.

Clinique Superfit 63 Fresh Beige: Super light, but unlike the MUFE HD foundation, which is also light in texture, this doesn't have much coverage. You need to use a lot to achieve medium to full coverage, from my own experience.  I feel like I have used so much already even though I just got this recently. Good product, but don't think I will repurchase.

MUFE Mat Velvet+ Oil Free, Water Resistant: Newest addition.  I haven't used it.  But it is super thick... and the MUA said I can use it as a concealer too.  I have good vibe about this.

Lying down in the centre, we have MAC studio sculpt foundation NC15 spf15: Due to launch in SG this Sept.  I like the scent of this... for some strange reason.  Ha ha.  And the texture is unlike anything I have tried before.  And of all the foundations, you use the least product for this.  Medium to full coverage. Smooth finish. And the only foundation I apply with my fingers.

    BEST Drugstore: Maybelline

    BEST High-end: Dior

    BEST starter/mid range: MAC

I usually apply foundations with a MAC187, seldom the MAC109 cos it tends to shed like crazy for cream/liquid products.  I also use the Beauty Blender sponge.  I bought a Rimmel 16 hour foundation before in the lightest shade 001 Ivory or smth but it was still too dark for me, so I gave away to my friend.

Yea.. that's all... and hope you find this helpful. And questions, please leave a comment.  I might do a overview of primers etc soon.  :)  Stay tuned!

Kinda burnt...all about the weekend - *Pic Heavy*

So I was saying in my previous post, I went to the beach.. that was on Saturday morning.  I made the silly mistake of not puttng on any sun block (tsk tsk I know) and this is the result:

    BEFORE:

My fave eye shadow combi of the moment, All that Glitters and Smut.  St Germaine Lipstick and Pink Fish TLC.  And Perfect Topping MSF.

    AFTER:

BOO!!  I burn rather easily, and I really SHOULD have used a block, but I covered myself with an umbrella most of the time (trust me, I looked ridiculous!) and I played frisbee for maybe 10 minutes?  Whatever.... SUN and my skin don't go together at all.

Yea, that was me, posing posing posing.  LOL and my cousin in the background, trying her best to throw the Frisbee.

Kind of had an unexpected haul yesterday.  Went to an expo sale, and kind of stock up on some beauty related essentials.  Like toothpaste, hair color kits, body lotions, nail tools and also surprise... a Maybelline Mineral Blusher in Original Rose.  Haven't opened them though.  I bought the toothpaste and matching toothbrush for whitening purposes.... because... when I was wearing St Germaine, I realised it makes one's teeth look really stained and yellow.  Ok. my teeth aren't very white... but the lipstick just makes them look worse.  I also bought a ELF eyeshadow brush.

On Saturday I also did a BACK2MAC, for Bubbles lipstick (which is limited edition from Sugarsweet)  which is a whitish frost/ palest pink lipstick.  It is also in the glaze formula, so expect very sheer payoff, and it is good for like giving a sheen over whatever colour you are using.

And I also bought a RIMMEL liquid foundation.  It's called LASTING FINISH, which claims to last up to 16 hours.  Well.  Let's see how that goes.  I don't think I will use it yet.. I have been buying and trying lots of different drugtore liquid foundations and so far I haven't been disappointed.

(Picture taken with my mac, hence the weird mirror image effect. LOL)

And on Sunday, me and my siblings went to Uniqlo... which is a Jap based clothing store -- kind of like GAP... selling basics and stuff...it just opened in Singapore.. and  man, everyone went NUTS over Uniqlo.  I have personally shopped there before on my overseas trip (like London and Hong Kong), so I am interested to see the collection locally. Naturally like a typical Singaporean... queueing is part of the deal whenever something NEW arrives.  Also, I must say, Shopping (and EATING) are typical Singaporean pasttimes.   Because there just isn't anything much one can do around here!  We don't have lotsa of theme parks, sprawling countrysides, natura parks, gardens etc...90% of this tiny island is a concrete jungle consisting of apartments, commercial buildings, shopping malls, eating places and cinemas.  So...I try to get out of the country whenever I have a stretch of free time.

The Queue suckers that we are.  My bro is only 15, but look how tall he is, and I am already standing at 5ft 9in (175cm).  :p

And here is a random picture of the Delicious crab dinner we had on Friday.  It is called Shimmering Crab (sounds like an eyeshadow, don't you think?)  and basically it is cooked in this super creamy sauce (like a Alfredo/ cabonara kind of sauce) with losa pepper and the chopped fried garlic bits sprinkled over on top.  YUMMMMS!

That's all, and I hope you all had a nice weekend like the one I had.  Thanks for reading!
