About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Recent Favourite Combinations [Foundation, Makeup Removal & Hair!]

    Hi hi!

It's starting to feel so rare that I am able to blog ramble on a weekday.  Even during the weekends, I hardly have any time to just sit and attend to blog matters, but when life catches up with you, I guess I just can't get out of it.  So for those who have noticed the recent 'absence', I do apologise, and I hope that the usual blog spam will happen soon.  I hope.  I hope.  Because I have so many things to share!

Just want to feature a few products which I have been liking lately, they are a little all over the place and I think that's the way I prefer to present this entry.   Hope you enjoy - there's some skincare, makeup and hair!

First off, we have this set of makeup removal and cleansing products.  I have been using the Shu Uemura clear brightening gentle cleansing oil.  I feel like this compliments my current (still Lancome) skincare rountine.  It cleans off my makeup completely, and it is very lightweight.  I didn't like the deep pore cleansing oil so much (the pink one btw) but this I really love.  I don't think I need to go too much into the efficiency of the Shu Uemura cleansing oils, and I always have one or two of them in my stash.  If you are looking for something that really takes off the heavy duty makeup after a long day, this is really a great performer.

As you know I usually keep 2 - 3 facial cleansers in my bathroom.  While I love my creamy foamy cleansers, I also like to try out 'alternative' cleansing products.  Namely cleansing balms - they are very big in the UK - and I like the idea of a cleansing balm.  It is supposed to be very calming, cleansing and when used with a muslin cloth, even exfoliating.  I have heard great raves about the Emma Hardie amazing face cleansing balm.  I ordered mine from feelunique and here's  the product information -

Perfectly balanced daily cleansing for skin that craves clean.

Benefits of Emma Hardie Amazing Face Natural Lift and Sculpt Moringa Cleansing Balm:
    - Thoroughly cleanses and moisturises the skin.
    - Helps to purify and minimises the appearance of open pores.
    - Calming for sensitive skin.
    - Revitalising for dull and mature skins.
    - Can be used as a rescue balm, i.e. on dry elbows or knees, or as a lip balm.
    - Doubles as a soothing mask if left on the skin for ten minutes.

Key ingredients and what they do:
    - Moringa seed extract, Wild Sea Fennel and Vitamin E: Balance, purify and help to minimise the appearance of open pores.
    - Orange, Neroli and Mandarin extracts: Rejuvenates and revitalises the skin.
    - Jasmine, cedarwood and Rose: Helps to recondition dull, dry, dehydrated and mature skins.

I don't use it with a muslin cloth though -- but I have just ordered some from feelunique in a separate order, and I shall try it out soon.  I really love this - it is so soothing, and so luxe and smells really awesome.  Even I just massage this into my skin, it just leaves my skin feeling so soft, and clean after rinsing.   It looks a little messy from the picture below, there's this layer of oil (Moringa I think) and smells really relaxing.
This is always sold out at feelunique, so grab it while you can!

And another item which I recently discovered is the Ettusais peeling milk - this is a gentle exfoliator that doesn't have any scrubby beads.  I have this for quite some time.  When I got to learn about its properties at a Ettusais event a couple of weeks ago, I came home, and quickly took it out to try.
Basically it is a milky liquid that you rub onto dry skin, and it will rub off the dead skin cells.  I particularly like to rub it around my nose area, that seems to be the most 'tough' area, and after I rinse my face, the skin feels super smooth.  I usually follow up with a extra nourishing mask or face cream, cos that's when the skin is in the best condition to absorb products.  Highly recommend this product if you are looking for a different sort of skin exfoliator.

Next, a couple of hair products.  I have other hair products to feature -but I will mention those in a products I have used up entry.  But here, we have a new shampoo which I have been using and loving for the past couple of ... days.  haha.  I saw this earlier in the week while I was at Guardian.  It is Ancient Secrets Moroccan Argan shampoo.  And it is only about $11 or $13 - very affordable. So far, I love everything about this shampoo.  It leaves my hair super soft, not weighed down at all and even more shiny.  I normally don't use any conditioner after shampoo cos I like the squeaky clean hair feeling after shampoo.  This leaves my hair clean without being 'too squeaky' if you know what I mean.

And one some days, when I feel like I need to make my hair look a little more sleek, or when I want my hair ends to be more tame (esp after a big DIY blow dry), I will rub a tiny drop of the TONI&GUY Shine Gloss Serum just at the ends of my hair.  It is a great lightweight hair gloss serum, that makes your hair super shiny, and also tame flyaways.

These are some cheek products which I am rotating this week.  Finally, I am able to tear myself away from the URBAN DECAY NAKED FLUSHED palette.  I decided to break out the Guerlain 4 seasons terracotta bronzer in 00 Nude - it is the perfect bronzer for my light complexion.  It gives the perfect amount of warmth to my skin without being visible.  The powder is so smooth, and it blends into the skin just amazingly.  I would compare this to my DiorSkin Nude Tan bronzers - very natural, and very very fine quality.  They are very similar with their quadrants of pale bronzing shades.  LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Next, is a scary bright red blush - I just have to dab ever so slightly into this blush - MAC Devil powder blush - it is a pro only shade though.  It makes my face looks healthy, and I just buff it into oblivion onto my cheeks, so I end up with a very naturally warm flushed cheeks - you can't even tell that I am wearing a RED blush.

Note that I have just shown below very very light swatch - this is a really pigmented blush, and I always proceed with caution.  Hehe.

And next, I am loving this pair of base products.

I have been trying out and loving the MAQUiLLAGE Perfect BB Base.  It is very smooth, and lightweight.  I love how it evens out my skintone. I will give this a full review in a separate entry, so you can see how it applies on me.

And finally, I recently ordered the Revlon Nearly Naked foundation (at drugstore.com via spree).  I just eyeballed the shade online...and it turned out to be a just perfect match for me.  I could probably go half a shade lighter, but it's nothing some setting powder can't fix.
Like the name suggests, it feels like nothing on my skin, and yet it makes my skin look very smooth after I applied it over the base.  And it lasted on me very well throughout the hot and humid days.  I would even compare this to NARS Sheer Glow in terms of the consistency and finish.  Highly recommend this foundation.  And it is so affordable!

I hope that this entry is helpful and somewhat interesting!

Just want to rant about something I came across today.  I received an email from a certain company, asking me where's my blog entry for xxx product, because she didn't see it on my blog....well, that's because I haven't posted it yet.  (DUH)
Was it intentional?  No.  I simply have no time to be switching products all the time.  When I am busy, I always just fall back on whatever is on my table.  I don't recall signing up for deadlines when they want to send this xxx product to me.  I will mention it when I am ready to feature it, after having used it.  I have never subjected myself to some deadline crunching blogging/ reviews and I have a million of other blog entry ideas of my own without having to accept "FREE" products to sustain my blog. For some reason, I got very peeved by this kindly email reminder.  I am in a good mind to send back this xxx product, and tell the person that when I am ready to try it out, I would jolly well fork out my own $18.90 to buy it, and use it if I want to.

Well, that's just a temporary mood damper..I would just continue doing whatever I do, and ramble on whatever comes to my mind.

Thanks for reading, and staying through to the end of this longish entry!

Can't wait for the weekend already.

    Updated Brows Routine using Eyeshadows

    Hi hi!

This is an updated eyebrow routine, something which I have been using for more than a month.  And I have been loving it.... This routine is something totally different from what I have been doing for years - which is my trusty Shu Uemura pencil..I wanted a stronger look, and when I went to Junry (at MAC Vivocity) recently to trim my brows, she showed me how to do it..which is exactly what I wanted to go for... that very strong, defined and thick eyebrows look.  I find that with a pair of fairly strong thick brows I can get away with very little else on my face...and also such brows will make me look younger.   Of course, I can't ever replicate her expert method, but its something which I have managed to replicate for myself and I shall share with you how I do it.

I am surprised that I actually love using eyeshadows for filling in my brows.  The matte shadows in the UD Naked Basics palette is perfect, it is a small palette, easy to hold in my hand as I do my brows, the big mirror also allows me to see what I am doing.  I use a MAC 212 short handled brush for doing the brows...it is a straight / square liner brush.  Finally I set my brows with a brow manicure/ mascara / gel thing from Shu Uemura in the shade ash brown.

A few points to note before we proceed:

My brow shape is really my own preference, I know some girls prefer a thinner brow shape, and I know also some people prefer to match their brows to their hair color.. for me, I kind of like the clash in the hair/eye/ brow colors.  Let me illustrate - I am quite fair, and my hair is super jet black.  So I can't possibly have matching black brows - which will be too harsh.  So my ideal brow color would be something quite light and ashy, so sort of match my overall skintone.  And I am usually wearing some sort of contact lenses, which are usually very very black in color, but in this set of pictures I am wearing brown lenses.

Also with this palette, you can adjust how dark or how light you want your brows to go.  In this tutorial, I have them on pretty dark, which means I used more black eyeshadow to fill in the brows.  If you want a lighter color, just use the medium matte brown in Faint.
I have also tried using the MAC Fuildline for brows in Redhead - that's a very warm light brown, and if I am in the mood for light brown brows, I also use that.  It is very long lasting and didn't budge at all through a hot and humid day.

So here's the palette and the brush -
I usually go back and forth between Faint and Crave, so mix and match.
I use Naked2 to do blending and neared the start of my brows cos there's where you don't want any harsh colors.

Here are the steps - I think they are very self-explanatory.  I apologise for the large fonts... didn't occur to me how clashing they look on here.  Opps.

I usually can draw longer and cleaner lines, but if you are still practising, shorter strokes might be easier.  Basically you want a very defined line for this outlining stage.

So now you have two parallel lines... slowly join them at the end of the brows.  As you can see, I don't really follow any RULES of the proportion, I just sort of go with my gut instinct and where the brows naturally taper at the end.

And the overall look - where brows and cheeks take the centre stage in this very clean look.  I have more details on this LOTD in a later entry.

What's your brow routine and fave brow products?  Please share!

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Nails Story: MAC Beth Ditto Collection [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

I chose two colors from the MAC's Beth Ditto collection - well, one of them is a gift, and I got the other myself.  I had quickly swatched the colors on a piece of tape when I was at the counter, and the other two colors seem to run quite sheer, and potentially streaky.  These two have the kind of creamy milky, even on the thicker side in terms of the formula, which I much prefer.

I also like that they both look so complimenting together.  A pastel milky yellow, and a creamy milk pale orange - it seems like I can't get enough of these pastel shades lately.

Here is a picture of the rather creepy looking Beth Ditto with her made-up hand below:

And the names of the colors?  Love them!

All swatches here are taken with Butter London top coat and base coat, and 2 coats of colour.

    Near Beth Experience

These can be a little tricky to apply.  You need to work fast, and also let each layer dry first.  Otherwise the polish is prone to bald spots and a gunky surface.  Even in this pictures, they look a little gunky, because I didn't really wait for each layer to dry, and my nail surface isn't the smoothest right now.  The glossy topcoat does help to make everything look smoother and shinier though, so I really recommend using a good topcoat.

Also, I personally think these stark milky pastel shades best suit short nails.  They also tend to make your skin look tanner.

    Life and Beth

A very pastel true pale orange

no hint of pink and red

It was a little difficult to capture the true shade though, because the color keeps showing up darker.

    a few comparisons

as you can see here, any mistake or nicks is magnified like 10 times on this type of milky color

a good idea might also be to use a sheer sheen pearlised topcoat to make the color look less 'flat', or look more flattering..

but I kind of like this bright crayon shades

I can't seem to get enough of creamy pastels...

I am excited for a couple more MAC nail polish releases coming in the rest of the year.

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Nails Story: MAC Peachstock [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

    Hi!

I had purchased this a couple of weeks back but because of my extensions, I never got to swatching and applying the shade on my own nails.  Now that the extensions are off, there will be a slight backlog of nail polish entries up on the blog. I have a ton of other stuff to slowly feature as well.  Time just seems to be zooming by lately!

Not quite sure what this MAC collection is (shock horror!), but it is a collection of lipglass, lipsticks, and nail polish - they take all their best selling shades, and come up with matching exact shades in the products mentioned.   So you have St Germaine lipglass, lipstick, nail polish, Russian Red, Ravishing, Myth, Angel, etc etc.  If you stalk Temptalia, you would also know that some of  the shades are only exclusive to certain regions (Russian Red, sadly isn't available here, or else I would have gotten that too).

So I got only one nail polish - in the shade Peachstock - which is ironically lost in my drawer of lipsticks, I think I had earlier B2M for a Peachstock, and never worn it.  Anyway, Peachstock is a peachy nude color.  The consistency of the nail polish (at least I know for this shade) is extremely creamy and smooth.  I also swatched St Germaine at the counter, but with all the OPI milky pinks in my stash, I just didn't feel like shelling out the $$ for anymore MAC polishes.

I really like this nude shade - the consistency is really important here - 2 even coats give you perfect payoff, and you have very naturally professional groomed looking hands. It's hard to believe, but I can never ever get enough of nude nail polish, they are all the same.... yet not quite.  As you will see in my comparisons, there isn't an exact dupe.  And I am only comparing with the 'darker' nudes, and not the off-white type of nudes (think Essie Topless & Barefoot, or even beigey nudes like RBL's Grunge or Deborah Lippmann's Fashion).

Bottomline - if you love nude, you need this nail polish.

    Photos & swatches:

swatches are done with Nailtek II, 2 coats of color, and Seche Vite topcoat

comparisons - the closest is probably the CND Desert Suede

I hope this has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

Moving my INGLOT eyeshadows into Z-Palette

So when I received this large Z-palette recently, I immediately thought of fitting all my INGLOT eyeshadows inside.  I am sure many of you are no stranger to the Z-palettes.  They are quite sturdy, comes with a clear cover, so you can see everything inside, and they fit all magnetised pans of eyeshadows.   I have an old large Z-palette that houses all my MAC neutral eyeshadows, and since I also have a substantial number of INGLOT ones, I thought instead of having them in various 5 pan and 10 pan palettes, I can try to put them all into a large palette, and I can bring them along for travels.

    Introduction to Shopping-District.Net link here

[But.... I realise, I need a larger palette to fit ALL my INGLOT eyeshadows together]

You can buy Z-palettes from various places (I have seen them sold at the Scape flea stalls too), but I received mine from Shopping-District.Net.

Click click click here for where to buy it!

I know my inglot eyeshadows look in mint condition - don't judge!  They are superbly pigmented, and a little goes a long way.  :o Haha.  Between these, and my MAC shadows, and my GA ETKs, I think I am set for life!

Anyway.... the INGLOT pans are magnetised, and they pop into the palette easily.  I also want to add that it is easier to shift them around in the palette compared to the original INGLOT palettes, which are individual wells, and they are notoriously get to get out of... nicked eyeshadows, and flying palette covers are the common complaints that people usually have about the INGLOT palettes. I don't hate them, but sometimes it is good to have alternative storage solutions, so when you are travelling or have to bring your makeup around, you can bring them along.

So they fit 18 INGLOT eyeshadows -- and I still have 3 or 4 lying around, and my rainbow matte ones can't even in it.

Maybe the Pro size palette might be better...

This is my first Z palette - it is quite beaten, and I have it for a few years already.  It contains all my MAC neutrals, 90% of them anyway.  After I filled it up, I kind of stopped buying single mac eyeshadows, because I would be thinking, I have no more space for one or two more eyeshadows!

You can see the sides of the palette is a little shabby, but overall, the palette is still holding up well, and this is quite a well-used palette, so I know the palette has been through some tough handling and done its fair shair of travelling.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

LOTD: Smokey with NARS Lhasa Eyeshadow

    Hi!

I need to put my Lhasa to use, because my girlfriend says she LOVES it, I haven't had much time during the week to do any decent eyelook,  And I also wanted to use my YSL Glossy Stain, but because this eyelook was turning out to be quite dramatic, I decided to use a nude lipstick OVER the YSL stain instead -- which made the whole lip combo LASTED THE WHOLE EVENING AND NIGHT!

    Useful links:

    NARS Lhasa entry here

    YSL Glossy Stain entry here

    CandyDoll nude lipstick entry here

What I did - all products used will be listed below:

I swept Lhasa eyeshadow all over my lids - it is a rather purple-y and yet sort of silvery brown/taupe eyeshadow, and then I decided to take it further by using a darker shade to add more depth to the outer corner of the eyes.  Before I know it, the eyelook was turning out to be quite the full-blown smokey eyes.

I wanted to keep it very clean nonetheless, hence I left the lower eyelids all bare.

Strong brows to pull the whole look together for me.

I slapped on my CandyDoll nude lippy to neutralise the YSL Glossy Stain, and the end results is this bright pop of pink that somehow matches my eyes and my top for the day.

    All products used:

base - Laneige BB cushion, Shu Uemura Smooth Fit foundation, Shiseido white lucent brightening skincare powder (this deserves another entry!)

    cheeks - NARS Torrid blush

lips - YSL Glossy Stain #11, and Candydoll nude lippy in Ramune Pink

eyes - MUFE eyeshadow primer, NARS Lhasa all over the lids, MAC Bloodline pigment for outer corners

    Lashes Shu Uemura Farfarlina

    Printed top from River Island

I styled my damp hair with Bumble & Bumble styling lotion (for some volume and slight hold) and then used my GHF flat iron to straighten and smooth the hair.

    as seen on instagram

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Le Métier de Beauté Corinthian Eyeshadow [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

Thanks to Hazel, I got my first Le Métier de Beauté eyeshadow in the shade Corinthian.   (I had previously ordered their Nordstroms anniversary nail polish set before) -- they are most famed for their beautiful Kaleidescope (kind of their version of eyeshadow palettes) but unless I have the chance to check these out in person, I shall stick to something small and safe.

I soon realised, Corinthian is a pretty much raved shade of taupe eyeshadow.  It is very pigmented, and smooth.

    It retails for USD30 (gulps).

    Description from their website:

A full range of complimentary and highly-blendable shades, used alone or in combination, to give radiant dimension to the eyes. Superior fine-pressed quality gives true buildable color—smooth together for subtle gradations or layer colors on, one atop another, in semi-translucent layers for a perfectly dimensional effect. Goes on perfectly even. Our quadruple milling process transforms pigments to luxurious weightlessness, strong coverage and their truest, most vibrant color.

The packaging is along the lines of Giorgio Armani and NARS (think sleek minimal black boxes and chic font, and the rubbery packaging).

A rather heavy swatch on my hand.

It is a rather intensely metallic medium brown / taupe color, and another one of those all over the lids color for me.

I decided to do a little comparison with my other eyeshadows.

group shot of some pretty single eyeshadows which I didn't depot

    beautiful.  sighs.

and some which I thought might be similar

    comparison swatches

I am a little glad we don't have LMDB here in Singapore, or else, I might just go a little crazy over their stuff (in particular, their nail polishes).

I hope this entry has been helpful (helpful = to remind you that we don't need 328093890238490 shades of 'taupe eyeshadows'? or helpful in stirring up some unknown lemmings for more things to add to your shopping list?)  Either way, thanks for looking!

Nails Story: MAC Daphne Guinness Hyperion Nail Lacquer [Swatches & Comparisons]

    Hi hi!

I was casually, very casually browsing MAC at Tangs last night, and this nail polish caught my eye.   There were several notable lipsticks with this collection, but I am ahem, trying not to buy so much.

The formula is thick and creamy.  It is a nude-y light blue, that has hints of grey in it.. I think.  And I think, I don't have anything like this in my stash (that's we all always say...)

It is pulling a lot grey-er in my pictures, in real life, it looks slightly more blue-ish.

Some comparisons... I don't think any of them comes close.

    That's about it, really.

    Thanks for looking!  :)

LOTD: Smokey Metallic Brown Eyes [GA ETK #5 & Illamasqua Ore Pigment]

    Hi hi!

Just a quick LOTD entry, before I leave the house.  Hope everyone had a great Xmas weekend, and if you haven't taken part in my giveaway, click HERE to do so! :)

Today, I decided to use my Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill intense in #5 Gold Blitz which my gf gave to me,  because she hasn't much use for it.  I was very glad to take over.  It is a very easy to use color, and blends itself out up onto the crease perfectly.  I wanted to add more bling to the metallic golden brown shade, so I patted some Illamasqua Ore Pure Pigment on the centre of my lids.  The pigment is so finely milled, there is hardly any fallout.

Tried to keep the rest of the face as flawless as I could, and some pop of rosey color on the cheeks and lips.   I love this type of 'interesting' smokey neutral eyes, so there is no use trying to justify why I need 380293890148 metallic browns or neutrals in my stash.

I am also almost ready to review my new Shu Uemura Smooth Fit foundation, and I think you can see from this set of pictures that my face looks very ahem, cough, nice and smooth ya?   This is probably my current fave foundation, and I am glad I purchased it before waiting for it to be released in Singapore.   The review will be up in a couple of days, where I will show you how I apply the foundation, and my detailed thoughts on it.

    All products used:

Shu Uemura Mousse base in Pink, Shu Uemura Smooth Fit liquid foundation, Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder, Cle de Peau concealer for spots, Mac Prep+Prime highlighter for undereyes

Cheeks - Giorgio Armani Micro Fil powder in light pink (beautiful opalescent glow!!!) MUFE Mat Bronzer, MAC Conjure Up mineralised blush (LE)

Eyes & Lips -- surprisingly small number of products --

Etude House primer, GA ETK #5, Illamasqua Ore pigment, Heavy Rotation Liquid Liner

LOTD: NARS Joyous Red Semi-Matte Lipstick [Plus Wearable Red Comparisons]

Quick comparisons of wearable red lipsticks in my stash.   By 'wearable' I mean red lipsticks that are rather sheer in texture, perhaps with some shine, and also reds with a tinge of coral, pinks or brown so red doesnt scream quite so brightly.

I think that NARS Joyous Red is a buildable wearable red.  If you swipe it 2 - 3 times across your lips, you do get quite an intense finish, but it doesn't scream BRIGHT red, due to the orangey brown undertones and the subtle gold glimmer.

I pulled out a bunch of reds that I can think of... that falls into this 'wearable' red category (so that leaves out the intense rich reds like Illamasqua Sangers, Chanel Dragon, MAC Ruby Woo, etc etc) and so we have the following:

I am aware that the Chanel shades shown below aren't exactly red, I am including them because these lipsticks have very very SIMILAR texture and finish to the NARS Semi-Matte lipstick.  That soft velvety matte finish and feeling as it glides on your lips/ skin.

A sort of lame LOTD where I don't have much makeup on, and I just slapped on the lipstick on its own.

    Pardon the messy wet hair.

Another LOTD where I had on full eye makeup and cheeks etc etc..

Everyone must have a red lipstick (or many) in her stash!  Which is your favourite red lipstick?
