About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

    Guerlain Cruel Gardenia Meteorites [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

    I wasn't even noticing the Guerlain SS2012 collection, til I was out with my friend, and she showed me the collection, and wow, I was blown away by this beautiful face powder.  I think I have a weakness for beautiful Guerlain face powders.  Bronzers, Blushes, Pressed Meteorites, the original meteorites, etc

    This is the Cruel Gardenia Meteorites, a face highlighter, that is quite warm toned, and very very subtle pink pressed powder.  When I swatched this at the counter, it feels rather smooth and firm to the touch, even though it looks like it could well be a cream to powder product.

    I love how subtle yet 'impactful' it looks.  It has that shimmery goodness, that shows up even more prettily, depending on the lighting, and how much you pile it on.  But it is not so crazy shimmery and shiny that you have to be very careful in the application.  I dusted this on quite liberally on my cheeks, and I don't think I look too crazy.  I will feature this again in a LOTD when I have on full face makeup.

    I also compared it next to some of my pale pink looking highlighters, all in different textures and forms (loose, pressed, mineralised, pressed).

    Here are some photos -- BEAUTIFUL!

    Compared it to my Urban Decay Moonshine cream highlight, because I thought the pinky tone might be similar... but the UD moonshine is really a SMOOTH glowy radiant sheen, while the Guerlain one has visible shimmery bits.

    In this overall comparison, you can see that:

    the GA loose powder is super ultra fine, and any sheen is very very subtle, and not showing up in the picture

    MAC MSF Perfect Topping is quite dark compared to the rest but it has a nice shine, I love use this for highlighting and blending out blush color

    the Guerlain cruel gardenia has a warm pinky shine

    the Urban Decay Moonshine has a nice pinky glow (no shimmery bits)

     

    The Guerlain Cruel Gardenia Meteorites retails for S$88, and is in my opinion the star product of the collection.  Grab it fast while you can before it is sold out.

    Haul: MAC MSFs in Glissade & Northern Light

    Hi hi,

    these are two MAC Mineralised Skin Finishes I bought from a live journal sale.  Well, actually, the whole transaction took place over twitter, since I didn't have a LJ account, and the seller, Javy is able to do everything via twitter, then paypal.  Everything was super fast, one minute, I saw Leesha (xsparkage on youtube) tweeting that her friend has a whole bunch of mac stuff to clear, I clicked on the link, browsed the items, and then in five minutes, I 'grabbed' what I wanted and cleared the payment.  And all that happened while I just woke up and was checking twitter on my phone.  I didn't expect to see anything to buy, but I guess I was at the right place at the right time, as the sale just went live, and almost everything was still available.

    Gosh, this is kind of dangerous!  I am always very prone to impulse shopping when I just wake up!

    I think she still has some more items for sale, if you are interested, this is her live journal entry.  Shipping took me about 3 weeks, only because we all opted for the cheapest method. Everything was so nicely packed and wrapped.

    I didn't really look up reviews, nor know which collections these MSFs come from, and it's only after I received the package today that I 'researched' them. Obviously, I don't need more cheek products, but I am up for some rare and hard to find items time to time. The prices I paid for them aren't super marked up, I would say that including shipping, they are about S$40 each, and considering that each MSF costs $46 here... that's quite alright.

    I am not the best at colour description, but I think this is a pale peachy pink base, with purple-y pink veining.

    This is from the Flashtronic collection.

    Brand new, unused.

    Northern Light has a warm base, with dusty pink patches, bronzey purple-y veining, and also some golden specks running through the product.

    I think the whole combination looks super unique.

    Are they dupes for Stereo Rose, or Petticoat?
