About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

    Current Faves [Jan 2012]

    Hi hi!!

    It is FEBUARY already!   *disbelief*

I thought I will give an update on some recent stuff which I have been loving lately.  Not really full reviews, but a few quick points about each item. Some are old products, and some are recent additions.

Collection2000 Lasting Perfection Concealer 01 FAIR

I can see why this product is so highly raved in the UK beauty community.  Really deserves the hype!  I have been testing this under my eyes lately, and it is quite amazing (I mean to just brighten up the undereye area, since the shade isn't really a undereye corrector shade).

    • Brightening Effect
    • Lasting throughout the day
    • No creasing even though used under the eyes
    • Gives awesome coverage, thick but easy to blend out by dabbing over my skin

    Illamasqua Skinbase SHADE 04

    • A little goes a long way, flawless finish
    • Need to buff buff buff!
    • Smells nice, lasts the whole day
    • A little shiny though I can put up with it, and just blot my oily T zone.

The following are items which I keep grabbing for when I do my makeup everyday.

Loose Powder - CHANEL Ultra Fine Translucent Loose Powder

This loose powder is different from my usual CHANEL translucent loose powder (which comes in different shades) it is like the HD version of a loose powder, ultra fine, much like the MUFE HD powder.  I was just trying to rotate my loose powders, and decided to use it more often.

Highlighter - Cle de Peau Vintage Palette III

I like to dust this powder all over my face.  It smells awesome, and gives a faint nice glow.

    Lipglosses

Chanel Extrait de Gloss in Genie and Glossimer 287 I think the name is Morning Aurora?  I layer them together, and the color is just a very natural slightly orangey pinky shade.  It is creamy but not sticky.

    Revlon Lipbutter Creamsicle

Great pale shade which is still wearable.

    Cheeks

Soap & Glory blush, Dior awakening blush

    Perfume

Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger - Clean, not too spicy,

    Nail Polish

SpaRitual Nail Polish remover, lint free cotton pads

    Nails Inc topcoat and basecoat

Makeup Remover: I purchased 2 bottles of the Hada Labo Hydrating Makeup Remover at Watsons when they had a promo, heard great reviews about it.  I think it is great for removing my daily makeup of Foundation, Blush, and any little eyeshadow etc.  If I have full face makeup, I would still reach for my Shu Uemura or Fancl oil cleansers.

Product Review: Hada Labo Perfect x Simple Skincare

Hi!  Just thought I would get this review up and ready before I go on my mini vacation.

This entry will be a review of several products which are in the Hada Labo Perfect x Simple range, specifically, the Super Hyaluronic Acid (SHA) Moisturising Range.  The Hada Labo range is currently available at all Watsons stores. The products which I will mention in this review are:

    1. Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Face Wash ($12.90, 100g)
    2. Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion ($22.90, 170ml)
    3. Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Face Wash ($30.90, 30g)
    4. Hada Labo AHA/ BHA Face Wash ($12.90, 100g)

How I use these products over the past 3 weeks:

I use the Hydrating Face Wash twice a day, unless when I am using the AHA/ BHA Face Wash about 3 times a week.   After washing my face, I use the Hydrating Essence, followed by the Hydrating Lotion.

In the following pictures you can see the products and a rough idea of the consistency, how much I have used.  If you check out these items at Watsons, you can actually test out the Hydrating Lotion on your hands.

I particularly like the packing of the Hydrating Lotion.  Because the consistency is really like water, it is easy to pour too much out of the bottle.  But the opening kind of controls the flow of the product, such as you can actually see how many drops come out of the bottle.  I normally use about 2 pumps of the Hydrating Essence, and 3 - 4 drops of the Hydrating Lotion.  In the pictures, it seems like I have used a lot of the Hydrating Lotion, but that is because I have had friends and my sisters who come over, and when they are in my room, they also used the Hydrating Lotion after washing their faces!

    My thoughts about these products:

The Hydrating Lotion and Essence feels 'sticky' when they come into contact with the skin.  You need to pat them and work them into your skin.  When the product is fully absorbed into the skin, it becomes 'invisible', meaning you don't feel like you have applied a lotion or any product.  Your skin feels clean, and refreshed.  What I appreciate about these 2 products is that even in my air-conditioned bedroom, I don't feel like my skin is 'dry' because of the light texture of the products.  And when I wake up the next  morning, I don't find any oily layer on my face.  Surely this must means that my skin is properly hydrated, and therefore doesn't product any excess oils?   I also did not break out at all from using either products, which is hardly any surprising, because they are really 'pure' and does not contain any harsh chemicals.

The Hydrating Face Wash is a gentle cleanser that washes your face, and does not leave it feeling tight and dry.  It does leave, however, a slight moisturising 'layer', which is not noticeable after you pat dry your face with a towel.  I do sometimes feel the need to wash my face twice with this cleanser to make sure my face is really clean.  But that could be just me being paranoid.

I am also enjoying the AHA/ BHA face cleanser.  I was intrigued by its claim "for an EggQuisite" skin, and how it is such a gentle exfoliator.  It does not contain any scrubbing bits, and is certainly gentle enough for you to use twice daily.  This cleanser has a thicker foam, and is certainly more 'clarifying' than the Hydrating face cleanser, without any dryness.

Would I buy all these products when I run out of them??

I always ask myself this question when I am reviewing a product.   Because this is the most convincing and telling of all, if I like it so much to re-purchase, then definitely it is working out for me, and I want it to be part of my regular routine.

I would definitely buy the AHA/BHA Exfoliating Face Wash, Hydrating Lotion and Hydrating Essence.  I might want to check out the Hada Labo Arbutin Whitening Essence though --- maybe good for lightening my blemish spots?? They are value for money, and does not cause my skin any irritation, and no adverse reactions at all.  I like how it doesn't leave my skin oily too. So overall, this review has been positive, and I truly enjoy using these products, and will continue to use all of them.  In fact, the Hydrating Face Wash has only about 20% left in the tube!

    Any cons?

I guess the very fact that they are marketed and formulated as 'perfect and simple' means (to me at least), that they provide a very general, one size fits all kind of skincare philosophy.  If you already have great skin, and you just want a no frills approach to maintaining a balanced complexion, then this range of skincare is definitely worth buying and using.  But if you have specific  skin issues, such as acne, pores, aging, lines etc etc etc... then you find that you need to use products which target specifically your problem areas.   I am not too sure if you can use, or should use any other skincare products in conjunction with the Lotion or Essence, for example, an anti-aging product, or pore-minimising serum etc etc...you get the idea... :)

That's all, and I hope this review has been helpful to any of you who are interested to try out this brand.

p/s: All products were sent to me for review, except for the AHA/BHA Face Wash which I purchased.  All opinions are my own honest ones.
