About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Belated LOTD (Purple and Teal) & Rambling

    Hi!

So due to my forgetful nature... I left my MAC charger at work over the weekend, and couldn't use my macbook, and had to use my little PC notebook, which makes uploading of pics rather troublesome (cos phone isn't sync to the PC, etc etc yah dah yah dah...) and well, I guess everyone is spared/ or missing my usual slew of weekend entries.

In my previous crazy lash entry, you might have noticed my purple eyeshadow look, and here is the full breakdown with pictures.  No prizes for guessing which purple I used.  I also checked out ION again, this time I spent almost the entire day there, exploring the basement levels which I thought were more exciting (other than Sephora on the ground floor of course).... Tried so many snacks, drinks and all sorts of concoctions.  I think the basement food stuff were all so Jap oriented, they even have a store selling all the lovely boxed Jap pasties/ sweets. I am all for globalisation and the whole world being a global market place and stuff, but isn't part of the fun of travelling also being able to find things that you can't back home?

Anyway.. I digress and ramble again. Back to the topic of this post - Pictures first.

On the face: I may have found a new holy grail (how I hate to use such a cliched term) foundation combination as I have raved about in my review - MUFE Mat Velvet+ & MUFE Super Matte Loose Powder

Eyes: Base- Dior Show Cream Shadow 'Glam & Gitz',  NYX Jumbo Milk

Colors - MUFE No92 Purple, MAC Aquavert, MAC Solar White, MAC Vanilla

Liners - Loreal Superliner Carbon Black, the same Dior cream shadow to smudge the liners.

Brows - MAC Fling eyebrow pencil

Cheeks: Improvise, and Nuance Mineralised blushers

Lips: Barry M's 146 lippaint, which I later switched to MAC Creme Cup later in the day.

And here is a pic of the outfit, a FCUK dress which I got at clearance price $39.90.  Yea to sales.  And yes, that's my fake hair.. haha.  On hindsight, I think the fakeness of the hair would look better if I am more dressed down (ie, jeans/leggings with tee combi).

In case you are wondering if there is a 2nd round of haulage at Sephora,  I am proud to say I didn't cave in, and bought only one more Burts Bees hand cream, this time in the Almond Cream 'flavour'.  I think I am addicted to the smell, and how it is not oily at all, yet rich.   I also ALMOST ALMOST caved in to the Givenchy Phenomeno mascara...I applied it to my fake lashes at the store... and then looked like I have really thick and sooty looking lashes... which is kind of wicked.. and it is weird how each time I tried this out at the store, and then I would get random compliments from strangers on my makeup... so is this a sign that I should get it???  The price seems kind of ridiculous though.. esp for something that I am applying on my FAKE lashes.  DUH~

That's all, and thanks for reading!!

Extreme Dramatic Artistic Lashes feat. Shu Uemura False Lashes

Bought some cool lashes today at Shu Uemura.. and decided to have some fun with my lashes.

Here is a group picture:  I already own those in the boxes, and the super long strip one is from the Shu latest collection.

This long single strip is meant for you to cut into your desired lengths.  It is very fine, and well crafted.  Retails for $42 at Shu Uemura ION store, and available at all Shu Uemura counters from next month.

Check out Temptalia's product information on this collection here.

So...my sister and I came home and played with this fun multi-colored lashes.

    Here is her version:

She pasted it on her upper lahes. over her regular lashes. I think it is kind of fun to see the colors from the top view.

    And for my version:

I put on 3 pairs of lashes to achieve this look.  Sounds crazy, but the end result is super cool.

The first pair is my regular ones which I need for length and volume.

The second pair is for the outer corner.  It has green and black hairs, and sort of slant one side.  (Mini Kaki)

The last pair if less than 0.5cm wide, it is multi colored, and also kind of spiky.  (Primal Mix Eyelashes)

    Without flash:

This is definitely something I would pull off for a night out, or just what the heck... anytime I want!

    My other collections

*Thanks to Diana for this fun idea to share our other obsessions*

In an ideal world, my own room will consist of a huge walk-in wardrobe, you know, like that Henekien ad where the guys went gaga over that room filled with beer?  Yes, that would be my fantasy wardrobe.  I will have an entire wall dedicated to my bags and scarfs, one huge vanity table for my weapons of beauty, lotsa shalves and drawers for my underwear, all neatly folded and arranged by colors and matching sets.  Other girls collect shoes, but my weakness is underwear.  I hope this isn't too TMI (too much info).  I have since stopped buying so much (the last time was when bf bought me a whole bunch from VS when he was in SF).    Why??  Reason 1: I honestly wear maybe 20% of my collection, which means 80% or more are still in pristine condition, most of them with tags still on.  I just wear the regular nude, blacks everyday.  Reason 2. I have run out of space to store them.

I buy my stuff from travels, order from VS, women secrets, calvin klein, and a couple from Marks&Spencer, and even ZARA, I have never purchase from the usual labels like triump/ wacoal etc because they are usually too padded for my preference.

I like the nude & black combination when it comes to colors, and also animal print ones - but they must be quirky enough, and not tacky.  My fave local place for buying cute and pretty stuff are Tangs Orchard (they have wide range and stock BONDS and Calvin Klein) and then online I go nuts at VS.

I feel like I am literally coming out of the closet with this confession of mine.  I opened drawers, secret shelves, shopping bags so you get a glimpse into this secret underworld.  Haha. Everything is kind of messy, which is kind of intentional, since I don't really want to lay out EVERYTHING in full view *who knows, later I get banned or smth for showing my underwear collection, or attract some perverts out there with weird fetishes*  Hahaha.....

I prolly have 60+ of matching sets, and prolly another 20 odd ones, both the'top' and 'bottom'.   My everyday ones are in my clothes wardrobe not pictured.

Then some overflowed...so they are on the floor.

And some more in a shopping bag which I stuff at the back of my wardrobe.

And some more in a drawer thingy....

Yes, I have a problem.   But what can I say?  If I am wearing something pretty on the inside, I feel pretty out the outside!  :)

As for other collections, I think a few of you also have the same thing... the MU boxes... I stuff them all in ziplock bags and throw up on top of my wardrobe shelf. I throw away the big boxes, and keep the smaller ones like eyeshadows and the LE boxes.  How can you throw away the Manish Aurora, or Heatherette, or Neo Sci Fi boxes??

Yea... phew.  I hope I ain't grossing anyone out by now.

My other 'sick' collections (which I am not going to picture) include:

    1. The entire Absolut Vodka collection in all flavours/ and LE packaging they are on proud display in the dining area.
    2. My scarf collection
    3. Notebooks which I don't use, bought from museums abroad, paperchase etc etc
    4. LE Adidas Tees
    5. OPI nail collection
    6. Shu Uemura Fake Lashes collection

    One Item non haul

So I was saying I went out for dinner, and my cousin was there, she just came back from her Masters studies at Cambridge U, I gave her a little list of UK stuff to buy... but ended up with only 1 item..I am now kind of tempted... to save up for a Nov trip cos she is going back again for her grad ceremony.  What a great reason to go there again for me! :)

But I digress.  The one item is a Barry M lipstick.

It's number 146, which is Dolly Pink on the Barry M website.

And here is how it looks -

And it is much more wearable than it looks in the tube, which is a bright fuschia pink.  But if I were to compare the texture to a MAC equivalent, it would be a LUSTRE.  So it is not like the 129 - Palest Lavender which is more like a creamy Amplified Cream.

This is how it looks like on my lips:

Ok, it prolly looks pinker if the lighting isn't so orangey.  Will feature this color again in the next LOTD entry.

And that's all I have to say for now.

    Woot to the almost weekend!

Review: MUFE Mat Velvet+ foundation & MUFE Super Matte Loose Powder

    Phew! What a loooong title!

This is going to be a review/tutorial of the MUFE Mat Velvet+ Foundation (S$65) & MUFE Super Matte Loose Powder (S$48??) which I bought at Sephora on Tuesday.

I have been using this combi since I bought it on Tues.  And I got to say, I am loving both products.  Everyone should own some MUFE foundation in their stash.  Here, I am going to show you how I use it, and some pictures.  But here, we have a bare naked face.

And here, we have the product.  I am showing you a comparison of the Mat Velvet+ next to my MAC Select Cover up Concealer in NC20.  You can see the similarities in texture.  The MA said that Mat Velvet+ can be used a concealer, hence the comparison.

L is MUFE, and R is the MAC concealer which you can see, is a little thicker.

And if I smear the products, this is how they look like. On top is the MAC Studio Sculpt just for the sake of comparison.  You can see how the Mat Velvet+ and Studio Sculpt is as 'opaque' as the concealer.

And here is how I apply the Mat Velvet+.  Since I am anticipating rather thick consistency, I try to sheer out the foundation by spraying my 187 brush with Fix+.

Even coverage, I didn't use any concealer, nor primer for this review/tutorial.  I also have not set my face yet.  You can clearly see the redness and spots on my face has almost totally disappeared and even out. LOVES.  And I don't need much concealer by this stage.

Then--- I think this is definitely my FAVE product of the moment.  The powder, which comes with a puff.  I have seen YT videos on the Illamasqua pink loose powder, and have been kicking myself for not ordering it earlier... since then I have been sort of hankering loose pink powder.  I believe it is the key to having a radiant looking skin.  And with the 'super matte' in the product name, hey, I am SOLD.

*BTW on my nails is OPI for Sephora Metro Chic.

I used the PRESS & ROLL method to apply this loose powder.  It is amazing, both the technique and the product itself.  I can see instant smoothing and mattifying effect -- as you can see in the pictures below.  It finishes off the foundation perfectly, and make my pores disappear. And we like that!

Say hello to matte and smooth skin!

And for the tutorial (by one of my FAVE guru gossmakeupartist) who demo the PRESS & ROLL method perfectly -- CLICK HERE.

Would I repurchase?  Yes to both!!  But not in a long time, because I will take forever to use them! Relatively good value compared to their more expensive HD range (foundation $75, and HD powder $55)

All in all, I say... if you are checking out Sephora this weekend, you know where to go and check out MUFE, and you know where I will be.  :)

Hope this review is remotely helpful, and leave a comment if you have any questions. Thanks for reading!

I died and went to makeup heaven (almost)

    Location: Sephora, ION

Was innocently on my way to ZARA via the Wheelock Place underpass, and saw this strange unfamilar opening, that leads to ION.  And so, we have to go there, right?

After a few steps, this is what I saw:

This is a Spanish Label, and if you like Pull & Bear, this is funkier, and I think nicer, better, It is just COOL ok... it's all over the place when I went to Barcelona and in Paris, but so excited Bershka is finally coming to SG.

I was soooooo excited, I didn't even bother going in to TOPSHOP.....

Then I saw this cute signage:

I think this is COTTON ON, except they just sell the shoes.  Next, we have.....

A frikking stand alone shu uemura store! The last time I saw a free standing one was back in the days at Scotts.... when I was in secondary school.  Everything was so brand new in the store, none of the testers had been swatched.

Then another new exciting makeup brand KORRES!!!  Those on YT would have heard LisaSz09 and Lollipop26 talking about their liquid foundation.  I almost bought one ($65) but the staff wasn't very insipiring so I changed my mind.

Then..... what else.... I went one floor up.... to the ground floor.. and smack in my face, I saw the tell tale STRIPES.  Are you ready????

    WOOOO HOOOOO!

Please ignore the random ugly men standing around the front.  What the heck are they doing there anyway???

OK, Seriously.. The size of this store, is like... maybe Topshop and Forever 21 combined at Vivocity.  I am not kidding. YES, i think facebysarah mentioned there is a MAC counter there??  TRUE.  And it is located near the entrance.

They have SMASHBOX, TWO FACED, GIVENCHY, BURTS BEE etc etc  etc etc.... This is one Sephora which makes me feel like I am back in EU... for a moment.  It is so spacious...and of course, I had to haul to commemorate this special occasion.  But more store pictures, which I took covertly of course.

MUFE!! Please ignore random stranger in the picture.  This is what you get for taking sneaky pictures.

BE counters... which is near the SMASHBOX corner.

And for the uninitiated (ie those not in SG) this is what ION looks like.   Think it's the CARTIER grand opening, lotsa crowd.. but I steered far away to avoid being spotted by paparazzi

    (as if right?? LOL)

Yea...... so.... I just had to share this exciting event.  Ha ha.  And I didn't even expect to be here.

Now.. back to my original story... of how I died and went to makeup heaven -- SEPHORA.

Spent such a long time swatching, and walking and just basking in the general presence of so much beauty products.  My friend says I am sooo high, I think I even got her infected.  Yes, my excitement is THAT contagious, cos she bought some stuff too.  LOL.

But the staff are so NEH....... they are so new, and they don't know what the heck is going on, like don't know how to match foundation colors for my friend, I HAD TO DO THEIR JOB!!!  Grrrr... anyway.. I don't care.  Here is my (not so little) haul.

BURT'S BEES  Banana Hand Creme ($18)  HUGE TUB.  They have lotsa hand salve thingy, but the smell of this BLEW ME AWAY.  Imagine those banana milk, banana chewing gum you tried as a kid?  Imagine this as a rich hand cream.  DELISH!!!

We also have SEPHORA concealer palette ($25), which looks like a cheap cousin of the MUFE corrector palette (think it's $59).  I doubt this has the industrial strength of my BEN NYE palette, but I think my sister would like this product.

Then the GOOD STUFF --- MUFE. I bought their foundation again, this time the MAT VELVET+ in the lightest shade 20 ($68).  This is like concealer... thick foundation.  But I like the coverage.  And then we have the SUPER MATTE LOOSE POWDER I got this in the PINK SHADE 2($45), it comes with a powder puff, which I think is way cool cos I can pressed it into my face for a flawless finish. Will review these babies asap.  And it is a HUGE tube.. cos the tester is kind of small (like BE mineral veil size) but the actual product which I got is bigger (10g).  HAPPINESS.  I was kind of tempted by the illamasqua one.. but for now... this is a way more accessible product for me to purchase.  :)

*UPDATE: I forgot to give my two cents worth on SMASHBOX. I have their blusher and eyeshadow trio...and this photofinish primer which is rubbish IMO, and also a mattifying primer which is also RUBBISH.

But if you have to get something from SMASHBOX... get their eyeshadow trio in TWILIGHT - I have this, it's white frost, carbon matte black, and a frost silver trio.  SUPER PRETTY and great for sexy smokey eyes.

Pass on the foundations - you are better off with the MUFE ones, or the regular MAC ones.

Good to try the PRIMERS - cos they do get rave reviews.  I am just sore I don't like them.  The silica gel thingy is just wrong on my skin, I don't know.

And also their famous O-Glow thingy...

They have this LE eyeshadow trio thingy in a palette... and each retails for $65... the packaging is kind of like NARS.  The rubber black box.  Pretty.

PASS PASS don't get their liner cake stuff - they are too dry and don't work as cream liners at all.

All in all, now that I am home... I am recovering from my 'high'.... haha.. I will definitely go there again this SAT.

Oh and I got FAKE HAIR at Far East Plaza for $25, obivously it is synthetic hair.. it is like a hairclip with long wavy hair/ponytail which I can attach onto my own hair.... and Hey presto!  Instant luscious locks... so glam.  Ha ha.   Will show this in a future look of the day perhaps over the weekend.

Hope you are getting as excited as I am!  Thanks for reading!!!

Look of the Day: Indian Princess :)

So... Today is a work day, and it's something called Racial Harmony Day, and i got my colleague to dress me up in this Indian costume, called a saree.  I am wearing my own blouse inside, of course, and a whole bunch of bangles of my own.  The beautiful red saree belongs to my colleague.  I am find it a tough challenge to take such small steps when I am walking around, as I am used to stomping about usually. Haha.

Nonethless, just to share these pics I took at my table. :)

*Ignore bumpy zit on my forehead! :p

Review: Illamasqua Sirens Powder Eyeshadow Quad

Hi!!  This is a quick but rambling review of my Illamasqua Sirens Quad.  Please bear in mind that: 1. This is the first time I am using it, and 2. This review is just my own opinion! :)  With that out of the way, let's get started:

Cost: 29 pounds, and can be bought at the website here. * They ship internationally, of course. 8 pounds flat per order. I guess you can do combined sprees to share the shipping costs  (I suppose there is a weight limit) etc...The ordering process is quite easy, and fuss free, and the delivery is fast, I think it took about a week for the package to arrive, and if you recall my haul entry, is super cute.  One thing though, the color swatch on the site is useless, you need to use a bit of your imagination, go on a whim, choose the color which has a cute name, or watch the YT videos out there talking and showing these products (even so, you know how the lighting can play tricks and colors don't show up etc). So... be bold, and be a risk taker, you will be rewarded! :)

    This is the product description:

Be bold. Be beautiful. Be a Siren every day. Our Sirens 4-Colour Powder Eye Shadow Palette contains four glorious, highly pigmented shades that capture the essence of the collection. Create lasting looks that express your inner goddess from dusk ‘til dawn.

Colors: 2 blue/teal shades, and 2 neutral shades.  The neutral shades are shimmery, while the teal shades are matte, which is very interesting, because all my teal colors are shimmery.

In terms of pigmentation: Yes, they are pigmented.  I won't say SUPER crazy pigmented, but if you apply the usual eyeshadow base, and apply the colors using a patting on method, you can easily achieve the true color of the eyeshadow in the pan. And if you want really POPPING colors, I suggest using a color base like a paintpot or one of those crayon/shadesticks product in matching colors.

Blendability (?): In terms of blending, I think the matte shades are easier to blend than other matte eyeshadows I have used before.  The matte shadows don't look chalky, or powdery/flaky, you know what I mean. Very soft, and goes on smoothly. The powder is also very finely milled.  The shimmery shades are even easier to blend, esp the dark brown shade.  And the pale gold shade looks yellow in the pan, but is more whitish when applied on the eyes, which makes it great for highlighting.

A little bonus: As I was using the eyeshadows, I smell something like vanilla, very fragrant. And I sniffed the palette, and hey.... it actually has a smell!  :)  Nice surprise.

Bonus: The mirror inside the palette is super big, and you can practically do your whole makeup by looking into the mirror.

Versatility (I checked the spelling of this word it's correct but looks weird to me): You can do neutral looks, or smokey dark blue looks, or like what I have done here, mix everything together! Ha ha.  So, great as a starter palette, try out 4 colours at one time with this relatively new makeup brand.

Hmmm.  What else can I say??  If you have any more questions, leave me a comment, I will try to explain.

Here is the look I came up with.

On my cheeks: I used PANIC powder blush, which is a bright red cheek color, and the pigmentation on this is SUPER DUPER UBER pigmented!!  My MAC 131 brush comes to the rescue.  You can also use a fan brush or a 187, 188 brush to pick up just the tiniest amount of product, and blend the hell out of the color on your cheeks---it is super easy to blend, and makes you glow.  I love this color!

I also used a little Porcelain Pink msf for some cheeks highlight.

Lips: I used Extra Amps dazzleglass.

On a side note, I have mentioned in my previous post, that I mixed my NC15 studio sculpt foundation  (which looks a little too bright in day light) with the MUFE HD liquid foundation which was too dark for me, and I am really happy with the results!  Now I have a perfect match! :)

For other my look which features Illamasqua products esp the Intense Lipgloss, click here.

This brand is going to retail in US Sephora soon, and I hope very soon we might see this at our local counters too!  If not, online shopping is the way to go.  My next lemming from Illamasqua?  Their cream foundations and I have already decided on my shade (thanks to gossmakeupartist -Wayne's breakdown of shades and comparison to MAC ones, I think I am a CF120 or 115, can't remember).

Final words:  If you want to try something from Illamasqua, start with their blushers (amazing range of colors), and lipgloss (both intense and sheer textures).  I heard Katie powder blush is a really pretty Pink blush!

That's all, and hope you find this entry helpful!

Look of the Day: Outfit and fresh face

    HI!!

Sunday morning: Errands, chill out, and slight depression pre Monday blues.  Nonethless, we try to make the best out of this. I usually pick up my laundry, have breakfast at the market, do random errands (replenish toiletries etc).  Maybe random trip to Ikea, Daiso, or impulse movie watching.

On my face:  Was playing around with my foundations, and I mixed MUFE HD liquid foundation and MAC studio sculpt.  I think both colors balance each other, and I think I can start using my MUFE again cos I think the color is kind of too dark for me.

Cheeks: Intenso (the shimmery side) and Improvise.

Eyes: Wash of Vanilla all over the lids, Wedge on the crease (but it's so light, I don't think anyone can see), and Maybelline Black cream liner.

    Lips: Not wearing anything.

Outfit: Old Navy polo tee, Cotton On Denim shorts * I am loving this pair of shorts.
