About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Flirt with Lashes (or, can $6.90 feathery lashes look good?)

HI! Just a fun post with the lashes I bought today.  I like the black feathers going on.. they remind me of this MAC pair which I always wanted to buy but reluctant to plonk $24 on a pair of feather lashes I just want to try for fun.

In terms of quality, these lashes are pretty raw.... nothing like the Shu Uemura ones which are really works of art.  But they don't fall apart when I peeled them off the box.. and they do feel comfy to wear, and doesn't feel heavy.

I do realise that to bring out the look of such lashes, it is a pretty combination of face color, eyeshadow combinations, the lighting etc etc.... so.. here are a few very raw pictures in which I just paste the lashes onto my existing worn off made up eyes.  As such, you can't really judge how 'couture' like the lashes are.  However though you get a rough idea.  Fitting wise, they are quite comfortable.. except of course, with all dramatic lashes you can sort of see the top of the lashes around your eyes, like wearing a cap...

    Eyes Wide Open

    Eyes Closed.

Fun to try out for Halloween or costume parties!

    Little Fashion Haul from Bershka

    Hi hi!

Wondering town after a gruelling day, had a much needed latte, and BK, and walked to ION for a bit, and saw the doors of bershka open!!  So I had to go in, it's like a funkier version of pull & bear, sizes run small though, I find. I really like their style, and always wanted to shop there ever since I went to the stores in Barcelona 3 yrs back.

However I did manage to pick up a few items and I want to share with you. 1 big bag and i small bag.

The star of today's buy is the faux leather jacket, in bomber style. The cut and details are very nice, in a glam rock way.  For $129, I think it's kind of reasonable - and it makes me look 10kg slimmer.  We love that!  Haha.  Besides, I think I can still get away with wearing it and not look ridiculous, and it goes with dresses, leggings, jeans etc etc.  Then I got 3 singlets - besides my stash of white tees - I can't stop buying singlets of various lengths and cuts.  These cost $11.90 each, and I got one each in Black (for my friend), Grey and White.  Then at the cashier, I saw this canvas bag, which I like to carry around to hold my random stuff, and it's $4.90.

This is how the singlet looks like - I can even wear it jogging if I am wearing a sports bra under.

The bag.  I like such bags, it's more presentable than those supermarket recycle bags or those nylon jappy types which costs a bomb.

And I tried on the jacket with some dress at Zara later on, and here are the results:

I like such faux leather jackets.... I wish we have cool weather all year around, it would be my everyday item.  I own one... but it is kind of too thick, and a little too big, but good for actually wearing during winter abroad cos I can layer all I need.  Case in point: this pic below, worn with 4 layers of clothes under the jacket.

    I heart Paris!!

And this wraps up  my little fashion haul.  Thanks for reading!!

Note to self: buy contest prizes this weekend!!!

Good news (and MAC Style Black Collection updates)

    Hi hi!!

Happy to say that this little site has reached 201 followers!  It kind of amazes me that I have an actual audience out there :) some of whom I have met in real life... think in a previous poll thingy, I mentioned before even if nobody is reading, I would still do this as my personal diary - kind of - I take my MU very personally indeed~  But to have a like-minded community interacting makes this all sweeter.

Anyways.... my next entry will be my Lady Gaga updates... thoroughly enjoyed myself in a nutshell.  But more details and PICS and maybe even videos!!!  She kicks arse (literally, if you know what I mean).

I saw Temptalia this morning, and a sneak preview of the MAC Style Black.  How cool it is to have all MAC products in such a black sleek manner??  They should totally do ALL WHITE collection soon.

    Picture and info from temptalia.com

My lemming list (provided everything comes to SG of course)

Lipstick: Black Knight Creamy true black (Cremesheen)

    Glimmerglass:

Bling Black Sheer black with gold pearl

    Blackware Creamy true black

    Mineralize Eye Shadow:

    Volcanic Ash Exfoliator

I think this is a collectors' worthy collection, if that makes any sense.

    Outta here!

Gaga rambling and some tips wanted

    Hi hi!!

    PART ONE

So, I am kind of excited, because I am finally going to the Lady Gaga Concert TOMORROW!!!!

    First question: What to wear??!!

I am thinking of just wearing a simple white tee, with either denim shorts or my leggings.  Then I will just wear a load of accessories, and also carry a little sling bag.  Comfort is of importance here, it's going to be a free standing, wave your arms in the air kind of event.  I think I will pack tissues, wet wipes, bring my cell phone and loads of cash (for cab, drinks etc etc), hair clips.  And that's all.

Make up??  Hmmm I might break out some crazy wacky lashes, but it depends on the time I have to get ready, cos I have work til 5pm tomorrow... and I kind of want to be there by 7.30pm.  Dang!

Please advise on what to wear???  And I promise lotsa of pictures - unless photography is not allowed.

    PART TWO

And this is a makeup casualty.  Yes, this is my MAC blot powder, which is practically brand new, but of course you can see here, it is broken into 3829034780240 pieces.  ARGH.  What the heck happened?  My bro who was carrying my bag when it happened.  Somehow this powder compact decide to fall out and drop to the FLOOR.  I heard the sickening sound of the compact as it hit the floor and saw the powder sticking out even before I opened to see the actual damage.  He had a sheepish grin on his face, and had the cheek to look remotely guity.

There is nothing I can doo to salavge this victim eh?  I mean I can't PRESS this back together, right?  Both my bro and BF were saying OH come on, it's not as though you don't have a ton of other powders to use... MEN!!!  It's not a blusher, for goodness sake.  Must educate them on such delicate differences some day.

Regardless, if you have any advice, let me know! Much appreciated!

    PART THREE

Something I am loving, I bought this a couple of weeks back (pre makeup ban/'puasa'), it's another Burts Bee cream, I love the delicious banana hand cream so much, I had to get this almond hand cream too.  Except I slather this all over my legs.  Haha.

I am also loving MAC's Dirty Plum blusher, which is a Pro color... it is super pigmented and the deep purple is awesome on my cheeks.  :)

    PART FOUR

And... I bought a new phone over the weekend, the pics in this entry are taken with my new phone, if you follow me on Twitter, you might have already read about it, and yes, I got a Blackberry Storm, which looks something like this:

*not MY phone this is an image I found online.

So yes, now I can check my FB messages, twitter, onsugar updates all the time.  Yes.. I am such a slave to technology.  The best thing is this phone costs me $98 after promo prices and contract - and even that $98 I can claim.....so it's like FREE.  Yes, I am a sucker for smartphones..previous phones which I still have in storage is my E71 (don't like nokia visuals)  and of course my trusty iphone - I will still be 'loyal' to my dinosaur iphone because it is still an awesome browser and ipod -- just that it is a hassle for to upgrade my iphone because I am not a Singtel user and not intending to switch soon    :)

Yup, so this is my random... kind of not makeup related update.
    hope everyone is doing well!

I want to buy some of these (if not all)...

I am not going to buy MU this month, but that doesn't mean I can't wish.  What's on YOUR wishlist?  Share in the comments below.

Here are mine, in no special order.

Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow (the colors I want to try are Skinny Jeans & Birthday Suit)

MAC Dolly Mix and MAC Brow Set thingy

And finally, I saw these yesterday and I am sooooooooooo wanting to try... but I exercised control.

The DIOR NUDE foundation series is launched here at last.  And you know how much I love Dior foundations.

Yes, that's about all. I think.

Tagged: Updated MAC Collection (Aug 09) * Pictures Heavy*

Hi hi!!  Was tagged by the lovely Diana to do an Updated/ Expanded MAC collection entry.

    Warning ahead:  Makeup Porn Alert!

It is an understatement to say that I have way too much makeup.  I have said here before, I prolly spent too much on accumulating my stash -- BUT obviously this is not the most gigantic collection out there.  It took me over 2 years to amass my stash, I admit I like to do 'stock-taking' time to time, if you see the links which I am about to include later on.  :)  This I don't expect anyone except -- for all you beauty product junkies out there -- to understand, I like to play with my stash, take everything out from time to time, and rediscover what I like to use all over again.

The last time I went on Project 10 Pan, it ended up a total failure (and meanwhile I was hauling  a drawer full of nail polish online), and now I am on a Aug makeup ban (gosh, who knows what else I end up hauling this month instead).  *keeps my fingers crossed*

Anyway, to give you some idea, of how this started.......way back in JUNE 2006.

And this was everything, including skincare, and mostly non MAC stuff, cos I was using more of Shu Uemura and Dior stuff then.

    One MAC blusher (Angel)

3 eyeshadows, a couple of concealers, eye prep and prime, Porcelain Pink MSF, Engraved, Blanketty lipstick -- Those were my basic and modest MAC collection.

Maybe a couple of years later....

    Think this was AUGUST 2008

And my previous update in Jul 2009

I don't exactly keep track of SOLELY MAC products over the years, but if you click on the following links below you will have a good idea of the increasing size of the collection - some are entries on how I tried to organised my makeup mess.

    JUNE 2007?? (Everything)

    JULY 2009

    Updated MAC collection AUG 2008

Updated MAC collection Video MAR 2009

I have not done an Updated MAC Collection since the Sugarsweet,Colorcraft, etc collections... and I guess this tag is kind of timely.  Haha.

MY MAC COLLECTION as of AUGUST 2009

(plus or minus a couple of items which are in purses, pockets and God knows where, and MAC lashes which are stashed in a drawer elsewhere)

*Sheepish*  It filled up 75% of the surface area on my bed.  Needless to say, I don't think the point of this entry is to give a breakdown of each item.

Yup... Was caught by the bf arranging all these shizzzz on my bed, and he was sooooooooooooo 'WTH am I doing'..... hahaha.... Going to relax this afternoon, and enjoy the weekend!  Maybe a quick look of the day later on!

I tag icyabstract, bailaoragaditana, and partialtopink to do their mac collection updates!!

Is this happening? (New MAC collection for Fall 2009)

Hi hi!!  Since most of us are on some kind of makeup ban for this month, I thought it might (or might not) be a good idea to look at what is in store for us, besides the Style Black, Makeup Art etc collections of course.  I saw this at Temptalia today, and just could not resist --- in general, I am not the biggest fan of MAC palettes, usually the packaging for such palettes are a little gimmicky (remember the Hello Kitty, Fafi ones)  but those I have caved in to included the Naughty Nauticals, Heatherette, and more recently, the Garden collection.  I have never purchased the holiday sets which they bring out every year, but something about this upcoming collection may change my mind, simply because of the packaging alone.

Presenting the MAC Magic, Mirth and Mischief collection!!

    All pictures courtesy of Temptalia.com

There are llp palettes, eyeshadow palettes, and blush palettes.  I thought the packaging is super cool. It reminds me ALMOST of the STYLISTICS collection which I missed out (wasn't such a makeup fiend then) which looked like this:

Anyway.... IF IF IF I were to get something from this MMM collection, I want to have one of the eyeshadow palettes, which consists of (again, all product info courtesy of temptalia.com)

6 Smoke and Mirrors Eye Shadows

    • Fire in Her Eyes Frost neutral beige (Limited Edition)
    • Black Magique Black with gold pearl (Limited Edition)
    • Deception Frosty golden brown (Limited Edition)
    • Spell No. 9 Soft muted pink beige (Limited Edition)
    • Wide-eyed Wonder Mid-tone frosty grey taupe (Limited Edition)
    • (Unknown color/name)

I don't think I will get anything from the MAKEUP ART COSMETICS collection, except I MAY get ALL the eyeliners, and that's all, I think.  Maybe Haunting eyeshadow too, to match my paintpot.  Somehow I *think* the pigments may not make it to SG counters....cos they just seem kind of way too out, especially the glittery ones.  But I could be wrong.

Meet & Greet, MAC Love that Look Haul, Rambling

    HI HI!!

Super excited, got home not long ago, and I am so glad to be able to finally settle in and do my leisurely stuff.  Been on a mad rush in the last 48 hours, meeting deadlines, meetings, appointments, etc etc.  But among the long list of stuff which I had to do, I am most excited about today afternoon's onsugar meet & greet session.

Firstly, I got myself LOST at the maze at the Raffles City basement.  I somehow got the idea that Maddy, Joyce (forensia) & Amy (purplio) were already waiting at Guardian, but it didn't occur to me they are actually at the Citilink outlet.  Silly of me.  So I made my way in the sea of red t-shirts pple who were going to the NDP preview to look for them gosh.

The first 2 girls I spotted were Maddy and Joyce, because I already recognise them from their blogs.  And it was also great to meet Amy in person, it was kind of cute how she was telling us her avatar is a capsule. The 3 of them look seriously fresh faced from home, cos I was just being totally unglam, sweating and just very 'rushed' and also a little nervous  :) Then we were joined by Linn (spelling??) and then lastly Diana - the first thing I noticed is her pink/bronze eyeshadow, artfully blended! Heh.

So the first 'mission' we had to accomplish was to hit Stamford House to check out the Fre3b or something store, and also the MUFE store.  The Fr3b store was crowded - there was a Q, and apparently you have to pay $28 to be a member before you are allowed into the store to browse and pick your samples.  But why pay -- the name of the whole concept is fre3b?  FREE??  Anyways... I wasn't very sure how the whole concept works... so I shall leave it to Diana, Joyce et al to explain further in their entries.  But we all paid for our Watsons card..including myself.

    * I didn't take much pictures of today's outing - was lugging my heavy bag all over and kind of too lazy to keep whipping out my camera -- but hands down to Diana who is really a pro at snapping covert paparazzi style pics. That was priceless.  After a while I think I got a bit conscious and always look pose-ready, as Linn noticed while we were on the bus.

So...... anyway... since Fr3b was kind of a letdown, we went to MUFE.  Bascially, we went around the store and swatched stuff, and talk about MU for about 20 min.  The staff is prolly kind of pissed, cos we didn't look like we are going to buy anything and we were just in our own world  chatting away.  LOL.

Then.... we head to town, specifically ION.. and to be even more exact, Sephora.  Haha.... there, we were joined by partialtopink (Grenda?)  *** soooo sorrry if I got any of your names all wrong or mixed up. She turned up with this HUGE mac bag... and the second she said all the new collections were out at TANGS mac, we were like GO TO MAC --  OK, more like I went OK LET"S HEAD TO MAC NOW  NOW... and suggested thta we JAYWALK across..haha... but no, we didnt, Linn, Diana and I walked so fast, by the time we were on the escalator, we  realised that we lost the other half of the group.  Within seconds we were swatching the new collections like mad.  I quickly made up my mind about getting Style Snob & Fashion eyeshadows (starflash) and then after a little persuasion from the MUA, Russian Black liner.  Thanks to my vouchers, I paid less than $20  for the stuff I got.

And anyway.... please, tell me your name, the gorgeous girl wearing the Club eyeshadow, for I really didn't catch your real name! It was kind of surreal meeting everyone in real life, I recall everyone by either their screen names, blog posts, comments etc etc but to match the faces, to the real names and all that, it is like getting to know a new class at the start of the year. :p   So.... please tell me!!

** at this point, I am thinking in video terms I would be just yakking and you don't need to subject yourselves to actually reading this epic post***

Maybe I shall post a pic of the stuff I got today to  break the chunk of text.

Yup.... so... after MAC, we went back to ION and continued our exploration.  Then Linn had to leave, so we took a group picture.  Again very amazed at how Diana is super quick and appointing a random guy to take our group picture.  :)

Anyways...(I wonder if anyone is still reading) .. Joyce, Diana, Grinda(sp?) and I went to taka watsons, and we --- no, Diana FOUND!! the Revlon matte collection.  We swatched the stuff, and Joyce got some eyeliners for her friend and herself.  Then we all went to MOS burger to rest/drink/wait....we talked about YT gurus, hauling, etc etc...later on  my sister came along, and shortly after we parted ways. It was just Joyce, my sis and myself, wandered to Tangs again, before we said our goodbyes.

All in all, like I mentioned, it was really surreal meeting everyone in real life -- all of you ladies are super sweet & gorgeous, and it is really nice (ok overused word I know) we are meeting up etc over our love for MU and getting to know about each other through Onsugar.  And also how it felt like we have known each other for longer time, and how we can just rave about all the makeup stuff..  And also somewhat unnerving (in a good way) that everyone knew about each other's product rants and raves.  Haha..I look forward to the next outing for sure!  I have so much more to say... but I think the other ladies will also be 'reporting' about today from their point of view.

P/s I will be posting a updated entry on the MUFE foundation review/ramble, since I think some of you are wondering about it.:)

Pictures Time!! The only time I took out my cam.. so we were all busy snapping pictures on the bus, and for s.ome reason the bus decided to move whenever I want to take a picture and it turned out blurry

    Linn & Diana

Joyce & Amy  --- Maddy and I were sitting next to each other, and it was impossible to take a proper pic.

That's all, and if you are still reading, thumbs up to you for your amazing patience  :)

    Something cheerful to GAGA about.

After the horrid theft news I got this morning, I am glad to brighten the day with this:

I am just strangely intrigued by her whole persona.  Hence the decision to splurge on these tickets.  What a cool deal to know that I can have a little discount on the prices since I didn't get the pre-sale or watever promo tickets.

P/S:  BIG THANKS to everyone who responded with such kind and wise words regarding the whole theft thing.

And that's all for this entry.

One Item Haul From makeup merchant (UK)

I am so excited about this.  I chanced upon one of my fave blogs to read, in case you don't know - hele's blog and holly's blog. Both young moms in the UK, with a passion for makeup too.  So, holly started a new blog recently, selling items which you can only get in UK.  And she only sells them maybe 1 pound more than retail price, and charges very fairly for shipping.  I ordered sometime midweek, and I got my item TODAY>  that's super fast!!!

For her blog, which is called Makeup Merchant, click here. So if you want to try out Barry M, eyeko, Sleek palettes (yes, that same one which allthatglitters mentioned in her latest haul, which was given to her by lollipop26 - other pple follow drama serial, I follow YT pple --- but that's another story altogether, and not all good I may add.)

Anyways.. Guess what I ordered:  I paid 6 pounds for this, and 3pounds for shipping total is about $22 SGD.. which is reasonable, and hey... it is cheaper than a MAC eyeshadow!  See reviews of this amazing product in the first two links I included at the start of the post.

STORM palette  there are a few color range.. but this is like the IT color palette.

I am still happy that I paid such a good price for this, and did not have to get rip off from ebay sellers.  Asked my cousin to get for me, but she couldn't find it at the superdrug she went to.

And now to show you the colors: Mainly smokey to neutrals, and most are shimmery except for the 2 matte browns which are super for blending.

I am not going to swatch it yet, but you can see swatches and all the endless looks created using this palette on Hele's blog.

So, if you always wanted Barry M, Sleek palettes, and all those UK brands you can now try your luck at Makeup Merchant. She takes Paypal.  :)

I have a US fashion haul on its way.... it is taking longer than this cute package, which honestly, took  less than a week to arrive from the time I ordered.

    Thanks for reading!
