About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Look of the day - Bright Eyed Natural

    Hi!

Just to show a look I am really loving.  Very natural and bright eyed, yet shows off my features nicely.

Stuff I used:(All MAC unless specified otherwise)

Eyes -- Painterly p/p as a base, Fascinating Eyekohl as a white base on the lids, Mylar e/s over the white lids and on the browbone to highlight.  Dazzlelight e/s on the browbone for subtle shimmer.  Smoke & Diamonds e/s mixed with Tempting e/s for the crease, and Wedge e/s for shadowing/contour, and Magnetic Fields e/s on the outer corner. Stila's Kitten e/s on the lower innner corner for a bright spark. *** OK this sounds like a whole shi*t of stuff just for a natural eye..... *blush*

For liner, I am using Maybelline new gel liner, that comes with its own brush, I will put another post on this later in the day.  Awesome product, so cheap and comparable to MAC's blacktrack Fluidline.

But I digress:  On the rest of the face, I am also using Pink Swoon for blusher, and Sephora's lipstick in ... hmmm, dunno what's the color, just a natural mauve colour.

    Concealing ugly bruises

Well, I was hesistating whether to post this or not.  It is kind of like TOO MUCH INFORMATION.  But I think it MIGHT be fun.

I mentioned about my cycling mishap yesterday (and mind you, I consider myself a veteran at cycling!), and today all the bruises and sores became WORSE.  At last count, I have about 6-8 mini bruises the size of a coin, and 3 PATCHES of nasty purple ones.  Warning before you proceed further, I am going to show a couple of pictures of the purple bruise on my right upper arm, that's the only bruise patch I could take a picture of without having to contort my arms and neck to take those at the back of my left leg.

    *

    *

    *

    * are you ready??

    *

    *

It looks worse if you can see the actual thing for yourself, trust me.  The whole arm area is sore, and I couldn't really jog properly earlier today cos the my body was just kind of worn out. (Eeek, am I getting old already??)

And then, I had this crazy idea to try and conceal the bruise. Well, I have been thinking and reading up on stage make up the last couple of days, and I came across all these hardcore concealers that can cover up tattoos and create bruises.  So why not do a real life experiment?  Of course, I don't own any of these industrial strength concealers, but I do what I can.  This is the end result.

    WITH  FLASH

    NO FLASH

What do you think??  Basically I just piled on my MAC select moisture cover (NC20), top off with my MAC SFF (NC15 which is the lightest shade), and dust off with some powder.  I realise how FAIR the underside of my arms are.  They are almost whitish, and of course my face products can only cover the purple/dark tones, but it would be a problem blending everything to match my arms (Unless I go crazy and drench my whole arms in foundation).

    Still, fun experiment, no?

And what is the greatest irony?? Tomorrow morning I am bringing a bunch of kids to the beach for cycling!!! :p

2nd attempt at organisation and storage

It went better this time around.

My make up is happy, and all the bottles of nail polish are happy, and everyone can live happily ever after.

Bottom drawer holds all the glitters (my younger sis is super fond of these, not me though) and all the blacks (my fave, I keep a constant fresh supply and in every texture of black, metallic, frost etc) and funky weird colors.

3rd drawer holds all the pinks, reds, nudes and some nail stickers etc.

2nd drawer holds my "haute" nail polishes, such as the OPIs, MACs, and Chanel.

First and top drawer now holds all the base and top coats.  I have a couple of fast drying ones, but my fave is Sally Hensen Mega Shine, I also keep a constant fresh supply of these, whenever there is a 20% discount at the drugstore, I grab a couple to stock up.  They are awesome to dry your nails and reapply to make the colors fresh again.  I also bring it with me when I do my nails at the salon.

So my make up stuff returns to their old home sweet home.

    Sorrry about the picture orientation!

Side note Basically I spent the night organising my room, it all started when I was looking for a pair of exercise shorts that went MIA, and since I had to turn my room upside down to hunt it down, I just got to re-organising areas of my room.  And in the end, MIA shorts still not found.  BOO!!

Last movie I watched:Quantum of Solace

    Lipgloss or lipstick:NONE

    Outfit: Zara Tee, HM pants

Side note --- I went cycling this morning at the park, and since it rained earlier, the ground was still slightly wet, and while navigating a particulary narrow corner, I FELL.  Tore my pants at the right knee, skin was a bit scrapped but no blood, phew!  Now at night, I count 5-6 bruises, with 3 giant ones turning a nasty shade of PURPLE. And they are at the back of my left calf, on my back upper thigh, and the worst one on the inside of my right upper arm.  BOO!!!!!

Here is a simple look I did a couple of days ago, I can't remember what was used.  The usual I think.

My heart practically stopped beating (as only a beauty product junkie can understand) when I saw the trademark stripes from far away.

The tagline at the construction area reads "Exclusive brands from around the world"  which means URBAN DECAY, TWO FACED, BARE ESCENTUALS, and all that good stuff which I have to hunt high and low for online, while travelling will now be here at last.

Needless to say, my siblings and bf were horrified at my dramatic reaction.

Failed attempt at organising my stash

I bought a 4 drawer storage thingy yesterday.  And Boo! I have so much S**t I can't fit in everything nicely, and neatly!  I don't have enough space for my eye stuff, my face stuff, and my brushes!

    Here is my BEFORE organisation:

    And here is the AFTER:

I CAN'T EVEN REACH MY PALETTE WHICH I USE DAILY!

    HORRENDOUS MESS!!!

I was trying to label the drawers FACE, CHEEKS, LIPS and EYES... but clearly, I overestimated the size of the drawers, or underestimated the amount of stuff I own.

It's too mind-boogling to think about this on a lazy Friday afternoon. I am just going to watch Gossip Girl, and take a nap.

    More updates.

New shoes and me getting crafty...

I had the chance to go to a private sale today, which sells Adidas Originals stuff.  So I bought 2 pairs of sneakers (streetwear, not sporty types) for $80! Really good deal.  Check out the pictures.

Maybe I just watched The Wizard of Oz today at the theatre, and that's why I am drawn to these red shoes.  LOL.

I like black leather sneakers!  This is my 3rd pair.  I have classic converse and jack pucell too.

Ok this is the crafty bit.  I realised that I am the most creative and inspired when it least strikes me.  I was roaming around town today by myself after the performance, and I was thinking about what stuff I can come up with for the black/white dinner tomorrow.  I am frankly sick of people (at work) coming to me for pieces of advice like I know everything there is to know on acessories. I am even kind of anti this event.  But I was at Spotlight, and inspiration struck me.  I bought a whole bunch of little rosettes.. in black, white, ivory and I threw in some purples for fun.  I wanted to make a corsage which I can wear on my hand.  I know the others have bought some flower stuff which they can put in their hair, etc.... but buying ready made ones can be expensive, and well, normal. I didn't have a plan of what I was going to do, but it is going to involve lots of twisting, little roses, lace and black/white of course.  I should have taken pictures of the whole process, but I got totally carried away with the making of.  And my folks got in the act too, my dad helped with the 'sealing' up of the bouquet stem, and my mom sewed the lace stuff and the bouquet to the lace wristlet/scrunchie thing.  I will coil a black pearl necklace around my wrist for added drama.  Enjoy the pictures!

I didn't take a picture of me wearing it.. but it is just a really frilly, lacy, 'rosy' piece of KICK ASS homemade accessory.

I am quite happy with the results!

I am planning to wear a simple black long sleeve top, and jeans.  This DIY corsage is just going to be the OVER THE TOP, screaming for attention centrepiece of my outfit (maybe together with the monochrome eyelook if I have the guts to pull it off).  Maybe I will wear one of my new sneakers.  Totally clashing, and confusing.

    More updates tomorrow!

Monochrome Eyes with Pink Lips (Pic heavy)

Again, a look I recreated from SarahVictor's video (URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkQlcvZHlD8&feature=related) I have my reservations about doing this look, as I don't have any defined crease, but I decided to be brave and went ahead.  Also, I was motivated to do a black/white look because I am attending a black/white theme dinner tomorrow.

This is a dramtic look, but you just need a few products to make it work.  Here are some stuff I used:

Main items I used: Smashbox' trio Twilight (I used only the black & white for this eyelook), Stila's convertible colour in Lillium, and Benefit's Thrrrob.

I used Fascination (white eyeliner) as a base before the white eyeshadow goes on.

    With the white eyeshadow.

See what I mean by having reservations on doing this look??  Not exactly the most flattering look.

With eyeliner. Everything seems to be coming together slowly.  I have not put on my foundation yet.

With lashes.  But something is still missing.  I then decided to wing out the eyeliner.

    Not that horrid now, eh?

Definitely takes some getting used to.

And some pictures without flash.  Kind of dramatic, I am not sure if I will actually go to the dinner with this look...or I might try a pin-up doll look tomorrow afternoon.  For now.. enjoy the rest of the pictures!

Smokey Look with Trax (with new lashes)

    Hi!

PS I did this look without my lenses (threw out the daily pair while I napped), and was squinting and squirming as I tried to focus the camera and not get blinded by the flash, hence if my eyes look 'off' or weird, you know why.

I just want to do a look using the eye shadow I bought yesterday.  Trax which is a velvet finish eyeshadow, described as burgundy-plum flecked with bronze shimmer.  I bought the pan version which I can just pop into my palette immediately.

I used a brown cream colour base from Shu Uemura to pull off this colour.  I think if I used a purple base, the purple tones in Trax will show up more.  So I ended up with a darker brown look. The colour payoff is amazing!! I think this will be my new fave eyeshadow for the time being (replacing Tempting).

Stuff I used  (All MAC unless specified)

    Eyes

Trax (lids), Plummage (Outer Corner), Satin Taupe (Inner Corner), Stila's Kitten (Lower Inner Corner), Dazzlelights (Hightlight)

    Orpheus (Liner), Engraved (Tightlining)

New 'dolly' lashes I bought yesterday.

    Cheeks

    Plum Foolery

    Lips

Astral (Lustre) which is the darker colour

Hue (Lustre) and Oyster Girl Lipglass in the pale lips pictures

Mess I created in the process.  Ha ha.

With Astral lipstick.  Can I just say how impressed I am with my newly trimmed brows?  :p

I prefer the pale lips combo.  (Hue + Oyster Girl)
