About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

Benefit Pin-Up Lash [Photos & Comparisons]

Shall start off with a quick haul entry on a couple of Benefit false lashes which I purchased from the Benefit US website during their Friends & Family sale (meaning there's a 20% discount).  I can't remember which YT video I saw in which I learn that Benefit started selling false lashes, and after a check at the website, I decided on the Pin Up lashes, which look quite full and fluttery.   There are about 8 - 10 lash designs, mostly rather dramatic ones though.

Each pair retails for USD15 at regular price.   And both pairs I have purchased are the same design.

Special thanks to Jerlaine who placed the combined order for everyone so we could all enjoy the free international shipping.

I am not too sure if our own Benefit counters have started carrying these false lashes yet.  Somehow I seldom venture to our own Benefit counters, and all my Benefit items are purchased directly from the US website because it is much cheaper there.

These lashes are very full at the base, and have layers of longer lashes.  The hairs of these lashes ae also a dark brown color... if all these don't sound familiar yet.... let me show you some comparisons with my Shu Uemura lashes... I have found a 99% dupe for this pair of pin up lashes!

I won't suggest these lashes if you have just started wearing falsies, because they are rather stiff and hard to apply, and the dramatic fullness of these lashes take some getting used to.  But they are the most fluttery and soft looking lashes that immediately make your eyes look super big (and the brown hairs doesn't make the lashes look too stark and harsh).

    The similarities:

Packaging - both some in clear sliding casing with the same lash try.

    Both are made in Indonesia

Both lashes are the same color and design

    Photos & comparisons below:

Here's how the lashes look like

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Haul: Goodies from Taiwan & HK!

Amy went to HK/ TW recently, she very kindly and generously helped us to CP a bunch of stuff.  Thanks Amy!!

First, are these My Beauty Diary facial Mists.  They look so cute, and I had to get one each.  I am on a serious facial mists kick lately, and these two are the latest additions to my stash.

I keep a small bottle of the Caudalie one in my bag, one huge bottle of the Avene one at work, and I have back ups of the Vichy Thermal Water and Avene one at home.  That's not including my MAC Fix+ and the Officina de Tornabuoni Rose Toner Spray.

I use these facial mists to refresh my face, cool off after a hot lunch, before blotting and just general wake me up effect.  I also sometimes use them to set my makeup, if anything looks too powdery.

Amy also helped imported a copious amount of false lashes and facial sheet masks, and I am responsible for five boxes of them. They are about $10 each, which is really reasonable, and I got them all in my fave style, the #7 cross black.  My sister loves them too, so she got 2 boxes and I kept 3.  Jerlaine had helped me to get my first box of #7 Cross Black from her TW trip previously, so I knew this is the style which I like for everyday usage.

Next, is this liquid foundation & loose powder set from 1028 which is a makeup brand developed by Xiao Kai [TW makeup guru].  Amy ordered these online and picked up at a 7-11 store near her hotel.  This set costs around S$30 after discount.   The shade matches me perfectly, and it feels very moisturising as I blended it on my face.  The coverage is light to medium buildable.  Only downside is  that the foundation only comes in two very light shades.

And lastly, the Shu Uemura empty Prima Palette [LE], which retails for S$22 here, but only costs us S$12 after conversion from HKD$.

And I collected my customised engraved Shu palette recently:

That's all, and thanks again to Amy for helping us with the CP!

LOTD: Winged Lashes & Pink Lips

    Hi hi,

Just to share a relatively quick and simple look I wore to the Shu Uemura event this evening.  The two main focus of this look are the eyelashes, and the pink lips.  Nothing too dramatic going on elsewhere on the face.  I have this subconscious habit of wearing the same brand of makeup for the event, just like how fashion people wear the designer during the shows.  So in this LOTD, I used mostly Shu Uemura products, ie the false lashes, and the hot pink lipstick.

All products used will be listed at the end of the entry.

CLICK HERE to read about the Shu Uemura @ Ion Orchard turns 2 event.

Close up shots of my eyes, and the false lashes used:

This look is quite dramatic in terms of the lashes.  I did a winged liner to align with the spikey effect of the false lashes I had on.  I kept the rest of the eyelids quite neutral.  I also made sure my brows [which are pretty unkempt at the moment] rather neatly filled in.  I also extended the winged liner to my lower lids, just a tiny bit at the outer corner.  This is to make my eyes look 'sharper' and more defined.

this is a pair of Shu Uemura falsies in my collection which I bought years ago

the name is Mini Khaki, which is an outer corner lash, with green & black hairs that are slanted outwards

I believe this might be LE and already long discontinued

I layered this outer lash over one of my regular 'natural' volume lashes

I am wearing Shu Uemura rouge unlimited in PK356, which is a soft hot pink.

This is the picture I tweeted, and quite a few of you liked it.

*I used a photo effect that made the color appeared more neon*

    All products used:

Base: Shiseido White Lucent Spot Control base, Shiseido Perfect Refining foundation [which I mixed with some Chanel Sheer Illuminating base to lighten the color], La Mer Loose Powder

Concealer: Shu Uemura Pro Gel Cealer

Blush & Eyeshadows: Shu Uemura M Soft Pink 327, UDPP, Shu Uemura P White 910, ME Soft Copper

Liners: Loreal Superliner Carbon Black, MAC Orpheus

Lashes: Shu Uemura Mini Khaki, Clinique Lower Lash Mascara

Lips: Shu Uemura rouge unlimited in PK356

*Booooo to zits on my forehead!  :(

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Shu Uemura Natural Volume Lashes [Comparisons & My Lash Collection]

Been wanting to try out the Shu Uemura Natural Volume Lashes everytime I see Joey wearing them in her looks.   And so yesterday, I bought a pair for myself, and if I like them enough, I will stock up on these lashes somewhere [most likely HK, where they are a lot cheaper].

My only gripe about these lashes is that the base is kind of stiff, and thick...and when you are used to the super soft and fine lashes [like my Ardel or Cosmos ones] these can take some getting used to.   But I really dig the wispiness of the hairs on the Shu lashes, even though they are criss cross -and not my fave type of lashes, the fine hairs makes it pretty enough for me to want to wear them.  And they look really great from the side -- they don't look like visor caps, and just look like naturally full lashes.

Here's how they look like on:

And some comparisons of Natural Volume to my other similar lashes....it does look 'natural' compared to the rest!

I have been collecting Shu Uemura lashes for years and years, and have quite a stash of them, I seldom wear them but I like to keep them.

My faves are Smokey Layers, Partial Flare, Black V, Black Slant.  I also like the Mini Khaki, Mini Rainbow for a pop of color on  the outer corners of my eyes.  Some are LE, and I have 4 or 5 boxes of the LE designs - kind of like to stock up, in case they become super hard to find.

    Natural Volume vs Smokey Layers

*I always cut smokey layers in half, and use them as outer corner lashes, more comfy to wear.

    Natural Volume vs Partial Flare

These look the same, except of course the partial ones are 4 separate little pieces.

Natural Volume vs Black Leather [LE]

If you like the black leather, there is the 'normal' version which is permanent, and it's called Black Luxe.  Same hair design.

These are the Magical Windfalls [LE] Takano for Shu Uemura ones.

    super cute.

And my stuffed drawer of Shu Uemura lashes -- not quite nicely displayed like the Tokyo Lash Bar -- but I really do love my collection of Shu lashes.  :)

I have done many looks with these lashes before, click the following for the lash LOTDs if you have missed them previously:

BASICS: Quick Tips & Tricks for Wearing False Lashes

Just to share some tips and tricks on wearing falsies... I have done a more detailed lash tutorial type entry in the past, so I shan't go into the technical bits.  Recently, I have been trying out half / outer corner lashes, and I am really liking the effect, very natural, super quick and easy to put on the lashes.

I am also featuring these new lashes which Jerlaine helped me purchase during her recent Taiwan trip, and these lashes come in a box of ten pairs, for about SG$10 each.  If you go to those beauty supply stores here and get the, they are usually about SG$15 and above, and sometimes the quality isn't that fantastic [think wonky lash 'bases' and uneven hairs etc etc].  The design of these lashes are called "#7 cross black" which gives some volume at the base of the lashes, and a little wipsy effect at the tips.

If you are starting out with wearing false lashes, it's good to start with the cheaper lashes.

The criss cross at the base gives the volume and illusion of thicker lashes without being too dramatic.  Also the lashes aren't that long and curled, so they are very natural.

When you take out the lash from the box, it look like this - and you want to trim from the tips on either side of the lash.  If the lash is too wide for your eyes, you might also want to trim them to fit your eyes, and I usually trim the inner corners away, as I want the longer length of the outer corners.  And I usually wear my lashes on the third quater of my eyes [you will see what I mean later in pictures].

Trim away unwanted bits of the lashes.

Put on the lash glue - and you must wait for about 30 seconds for the glue to become tacky.  I don't normally use a tweezer to hold the lash, I just use my fingers... but this is just for photo-taking purposes.

The glue will dry clear, and you can see, I pasted the lashes on the most outer corner of my eyes.  This has the effect of lengthening and enlarging the appearance of the eyes.  Also it is not comfortable to put the lashes all the way into the inner corner, you will feel the base of the lashes 'poking' your lids causing your eyes to tear, and then the lash wil fall off easily due to the tears.

This is a very natural everyday false lash look.  As I didn't have much of my own lashes to speak of, I didn't bother with putting mascara on upper lashes.  This also means my false lashes are relatively clean, and can be used many times [you will know when to throw them out -- the base becomes all wonky and they don't fit well on your lids].

Next, I am showing how you can create your own half/ outer corner lashes.  There are ready made mini ones, and they usually cost the same as full sized lashes.  But if you have a pair of full lashes, you can cut them in half [you can only do this for lashes that are shorter on BOTH the outer and inner corners, the tapered ones with longer corners can't be cut in half for this purpose].

As shown in this example here:  so both halves are symmetrical.   Half lashes are very easy to apply, and again you want to place them as near to the outer corner of the eyes as possible.

And I usually store my lashes which I am currently using in a old lash case, so they don't get all mashed up.   I never wash them under running water, I just gently peel off the old glue, and then they are all good to go again.

And last night, Amy bought each of us a box to keep our new stash of falsies!  They are like giant pill-boxes, with adjustable compartments, space to keep your lash glue as well.

That's all, I hope this entry has been useful, and if you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
