About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

    LOTD: Giorgio Armani Smokey Copper

    Hi hi!

This is my go-to instant glam eye look.  Lots of black, and lots of lashes.  And I have lots of variations of this black smokey eyes.  I find that it flatters me easily without having to reach for too many colors on my eyes.  I also think this is the lazy girl's version of a complicated looking smokey eyes.  All you need is that pot of a gorgeous multi-shimmer black based eyeshadow.

This look features the GA ETK #24, also known as Smokey Copper.  I just use this and blend it all over my lids, resulting in a quite a dramatic black eye.  I also used Shu Uemura's Farfallina lashes to match the dramatic black eyes.  (Dramatic by my standards anyway).

Rest of the face, as you know... is kept as clean and simple as possible.  I personally prefer a light colored lipstick, as opposed to a 'NUDE' lipstick, which I personally find unflattering, and too cliched. And anyway, lips with some color look healthier.

Just a recap of #24 Smokey Copper (link here for my GA ETK overview)

You can see there are some sparkles of golden goodness there. I didn't use a browbone highlight.

On the rest of my face, I used

GA Maestro fusion makeup ( I did not set the foundation )

    GA Sheer Blush No 5

    GA Lipstick in No 508

    Shu Uemura Farfallina lashes

NARS Larger than Life Via Veneto

    Clinique Lower Lash mascara

Lens Blincon BB Color-Choco (14.5mm diameter)

Hope this is helpful, and do let me know what's your fave instant party ready look in the comments below!

    Thanks for reading!

Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense - My Current Collection & Comparisons

    Hi hi!

As mentioned in this entry, I will be doing an overview - seeing as I think I have more or less completed my collection so far, I think I already have all the colors which I wanted, and unless there is a new collection coming - these 13 gorgeous pots will keep me happy for a long time to come.

I first came across the ETKs when they first launched in Hong Kong early last year.  Started with 2, and gradually throughout the year, I purchased more and more during my travels and when kind friends helped with ordering and purchasing.  The quality of the ETKs are amazing, and the colors are intense and long lasting.  I normally use them dry, with a fluffy brush like the MAC 217.  There is a little fallout, but it isn't very serious, and you can easily just sweep off any bits with a powder brush.  I like to use the darker blackish shades as a base to make a pale eyeshadow look pow-wow, as shown in this tutorial HERE.

    Product Description

This innovative hybrid texture, which is not a powder, nor a cream acts like a smooth, lasting color film. Each shade is intensified with a second pigment for a multi-dimensional effect. In just one swoop, create a wet, shimmering smokey eye. Base color covers eyelid, and second pigment adds drama to the contour.

The technology: Color-FilTM,  for the first time in an eyeshadow. A new high resistance bi-polymer enables the formula to perfectly fit the color to the eyelid with cushiony suppleness, for a never seen comfortable long wear.

Twenty four hour color wear, crease proof, flake proof, waterproof and sweat-proof,  Eyes To Kill Intense Eyeshadows slide on, stay on, but wipe off in an instant. Apply wet or dry with fingers or the Armani large eye contour brush.

Shall end this entry with some sneak peek pictures of a special Giorgio Armani press event I attended earlier in the week.

It was a lovely and elegant afternoon, totally enjoyed the good company, and basking in all the new upcoming fall makeup pieces.

The event was for their new Maestro foundation.

I will be featuring this new foundation in a couple of weeks.

Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense #21 Obsidian Grey [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

This was ordered directly from Barneys.com (they are still offering free intl shipping til end of the month, hurry up!).  Recently (is it for summer?) Giorgio Armani released a collection of 4 new shades of these ETKs, and of them all, Obsidian Grey caught my eyes - Obsidian Black was totally tempting me, but after seeing swatches and comparisons online, it looks too much of just a black for me to get it (and also considering that I already own 02 Lust Red and 13 Black, I don't need another black variety).

Obsidian Grey is a beautiful dark metallic grey that is shot through with specks of teal, blue, green and some pink/purple bits.  It catches the light wonderfully, and is one of the more dimensional shades of the ETK range - they are all quite multi-dimensional but this is especially so.  I am glad I bought this.  It would make for a great smokey eyelook just on its own, and darken on the outer corners with #13 Black.

    product description:

The formula is composed of an unprecedented association between binder elements and pearls that creates an exceptional luminosity depth and intensity of the eye color. Twenty four hour color wear, waterproof and sweat-proof, the Eyes to Kill eyeshadows slide on, stay on but wipe off in an instant. Applied wet or dry with fingers or a brush, the Color-Fil color matrix blend and layer endlessly without creasing or flaking.

    swatches

swatches in direct sunlight & indoor shade

    comparisons

Each ETK is unique in its distribution of colors, especially when you get those with 2 distinct shades in one pot, for example, #4 Pulp Fiction has a combination of red & dark grey hues, and some pots might have more red than grey, resulting in an overall pinkier/redder appearance, while others are mostly a grey metallic shade. The same goes for #3 Purpura, a combo of gold and purple. So, in comparing Pulp Fiction and Obsidian Grey - it really depends on each individual pot that you already own.  I think mine has quite a balanced combo of the red/pink shade and the grey shade, so the overall effect is quite a warm toned dark grey.  It is certainly nowhere near a dupe next to Obsidian Grey.

I have placed Obsidian Grey together with a few grey/silver types for comparison's sake, so you get an idea of the different textures and finishes.

The good thing is, ETKs are now readily available at our local DFS, so if you want a first hand swatch, you don't have to go overseas, or depend on photo swatches.  There is nothing quite like being able to play with them in person. I fell in love with them since the whole range first launched in March last year, and til now these are still the staples in my stash for whenever I want a fail-proof eyemakeup look.

    Hope this has been helpful,

    and thanks for looking!

LOTD: Armani Eyes to Kill Intense in No.6 Khaki Pulse

    Hi hi,

I got one more Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill intense eyeshadow recently, all thanks to Jolyn who went to HK recently.  This is in the color #06, and it's called Khaki Pulse.

For more Eyes to Kill entries, click on the following:

    LOTD with #04 Pulp Fiction

Swatches of various Eyes to Kill

    LOTD with #03 Pupura

This is a easy to use color that you can build up to a smokey intense metallic smokey eyes, or just a light sweep all over the lids for some definition and natural colour.  It's 'natural' but not boring.

If you want a precise and intense application, use a paddle type of brush to apply the product [eg MAC239 type of brush] and if you want to blend out the edges, or just want a light sweep of color all over, use a fluffy dense brush.  [eg MAC 217 type of brush].

I recommend using a eyeshadow primer underneath for maximum lasting and crease-proof power.

Color is more vibrant and shimmery in real life.

Sorry for the recent half face pictures, my other eye is a litttle nasty, you see what I mean in the last pic there.   And I feel I am getting so pouffy!  Argh.  Holidays are here, and I need to detox and de-fat myself.  :(

    Everything else on my face:

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation, MAC Cheeky Bronze, Oriental lip balm, MAC powdersurge on lower lids, shu uemura pro-gel cealer

How I apply this product to achieve the look:

I use a primer first, which is the UDPP.  Then I apply a flesh colored eyeshadow all over browbone for some subtle highlight.  Then I packed on the color on my lids, just making sure the color is the most intense nearest to the lashes.. and it gradually blends/ fades upwards to the crease -- using a fluffy brush like MAC217.  Once you are happy with the blending, you can go back and intensify the color on the eye but using a MAC239 to pack on the color.

The multi-dimensional colors --both warm and cool toned metallic shades makes this neutral color very chic and again, makes it looks like you have spent time to achieve the overall effect, when it's really just slap it on and go.  :)

See that corner of my eyes, it is kind of raw at the moment!  :(

Got a manicure and pedicure today, and these are the colors I brough along with me.

on my toes is a MAC nail polish, the name escapes my mind right now.

[edit] thanks to Jennifer, it's Soiree!  :)

on my fingernails is a combination of Essie Topless & Barefoot with Kisses & Bises

    [Essie swatch entry HERE]

I have a couple more GA Eyes to Kill which I have yet to feature, but instead of just doing haul entry, I will only feature them when I finally got to using them in LOTDs.  Stay tuned!

    Thanks for looking!

LOTD: Armani Eyes to Kill Intense in No.4 Pulp Fiction

Armani Eyes to Kill Intense in 4, Pulp Fiction

steely cornflower (blue-purple) *as described by Karlasugar

It is amazing, I can't stop raving about the Eyes to Kill Intense eyeshadows.  They don't crease, they are multi-dimensional, the quality is great, lasts the entire day, I have nothing bad to say about it.  The packaging is awesome too, I like the fact that each pot comes with a little flat cap thingy which you can press back into the product to keep everything compact and smooth.  When I saw these, I was like to the heck with the powder eyeshadows... I got to grab them (even though I had no intention to buy any Armani eye products - was eyeing mainly the face and cheek products).

I didn't have to use any color base, and as you can see in the picture below, this ONE shade alone creates the look of the crease, shimmery lids, it adds depth, color and pop all at once.

Swatches and haul entry, click HERE, and HERE.

    Products used:

Foundation - Lancome Pro Base, Armani Lasting UV Foundation, La Mer Powder

    Lips - Nothing!!

Eyes - NARS Primer, Armani Eyes to Kill Intense #4, Heavy Rotation (??) liquid liner

    Blush - Benefit Bella Bimba
