About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

    Deborah Lippmann Modern Love

I can't resist a good nude nail polish, and Deborah Lippmann's Modern Love is one of them.  Glad to have found it while I was in HK last week, since I have not seen it online locally.

It retails for about S$30 at Joyce boutiques (available at Lane Crawford IFC, Times Square, and their standalone store at Harbor City).

Modern Love is a creamy pinky nude.  Opaque in two coats.  I love it!

That's about it, and I have several entries coming up today.

    Thanks for looking!

    Nails Story: Some Color Comparisons

    Hi hi!

This is a random entry comparing a few sets of similar nail polishes I have in my stash. And also to show off the amazing quality of my iphone5 which I bought yesterday (I got a 64GB, Black one, and for less than $2 LOL LOL LOL) so anyway, all the pictures in this entry and the next are taken with my iphone5.  So happy that it is able to capture the shimmer and shine of all the different colors!  Totally can use it during events, and take lots of awesome pictures, and with my bottomless pit of the storage...woots!  I didn't think it was possible to make a better camera than the iphone4, but it is possible.. and I am still really impressed, and just super happy with my new phone.

So anyway... yes, first up, we have a pair of bright reddish orange - one from Deborah Lippmann Lara's Dream and Chanel's Holiday.  I recently purchased Holiday - and then I realised, oh man, it is so similar to Lara's Dream.  Not sure if it is apparent in the picture, but Holiday is slightly redder.  I also prefer the formula of Holiday.

The angle in this picture makes the two look like total dupes.  Well, I would say that they are 95% dupes.

Next, this set of comparisons, I gotten a couple of questions from girls asking how the Chanel Delicatesse compares to the Essie and the OPI shade. So here they are.

Essie All Tied Up - pinker and contains tiny tiny gold shimmer

    Chanel Delicatesse - Creamy, browner

OPI Schapps Out of It! - Brighter than Delicatesse, contains very very tiny silver sheen

And here we have the greys, my fave comparison!

Deborah Lippmann Stormy Weather - Dark warm grey

NARS Galion - Blackened mysterious grey

NARS Storm Bird - Pearlie looking medium rich grey

YSL Stormy Grey - Medium cool toned grey with a subtle sheen

    Current Fave is Storm Bird

The dark purples - all Chanel.   (2 coats, no topcoat)

Paradoxal - brownish purple with a super pretty purple-y sheen

    Provocation - Creamy berry purple

Rouge Noir - Blackened red purple, the darkest of all

Hope you find this entry helpful!

    Thanks for looking!

New Deborah Lippmann Polishes: Mermaid's Dream, Ray of Light, Lara's Theme [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi!

Last week, I purchased two polishes from Luxola.com, where they re-stocked the new Deborah Lippmann colors.  Since I am only getting a couple of these, it is the fastes and best way to get my hands on them.  The third color is actually a free gift with above $50 purchases, and it is quite a good deal, since you are getting 3 DL polishes for the prices of 2 (but the free nail polish shade is already pre-fixed).

The two colors that I am keen on, are the new summer (or spring) shades - Mermaid's Dream, and Ray of Light.

Mermaid's Dream is a beautiful shimmery, glittery golden teal color.  It contains specks of blue glitter, and finer bits of gold glitter.  It really does look like fish scales, very oceanic, and very unique, IMO.

Ray of Light is a cool toned navy blue (a little sheerish but not streaky) with orange/green/red flakies inside.  It is certainly something interesting...although not entirely unique.  I think you can paint a blue as base, and finish off with a flakie nail polish, and would end up with the same, if not better effect.

Lara's Theme is a nail polish shade inspired/ or perhaps created by Lara Stone (my model girl crush) it is a reddish orange - not orangey red okay!  Heheh.  The formula is great, and creamy, and looks intensely opaque in two coats.

    Photos & swatches:

All swatches in this entry are done with a coat of Butter London Flawless Basecoat, two coats of polish, and finish with Butter London Quick Topcoat.

Nails Story: An Extremely Glittery Week!

Loving this nail polish combination the past week!

For a change, I applied the glittery mess at the base of the nails instead of at the tips.

Base coat & Top Coat: Nail Tek Foundation II, Seche Vite quick dry

    Colours used:

Combination #1 - Estee Lauder Blue Dahlia (2 coats), then OPI Crown me Already, then Essie Set in Stones for the larger pieces of glitter scattered about

Combination #2 - Deborah Lippmann Edge of Glory (2 coats), Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday at the base, and on the thumb I added a bit of Deborah Lippmann Edge of Glory holographic flakie

That's all, and thanks for looking!

Nails Story: Deborah Lippmann's Stairway to Heaven [Swatches & Comparisons]

My latest Deborah Lippmann purchase is Stairway to Heaven - what do you call this sort of glitter? Holographic glitter?  But not the silvery type of holographic.  It is a very scaly, pinky, blueish.. ah, you can see for yourself in the pictures.  They remind me of scales, and pearls and some kind of frosting bits.  The shimmery bits are suspended in a milky sheer cream base.   i first swatched this shade when I was in HK, and I didn't get it... but I found myself thinking and thinking of it... so I finally decided to buy it.

The polish contains mainly larger bits of glitter, and the sheer creamy base makes the overall shiny effect a little muted.  But they still reflect multi-color shimmer under daylight and also indoor lighting.

Did I mention, I love the name?

I am also comparing it with China Glaze Snowglobe, which I recently purchased from Nail Vibe.  Snowglobe seems to have a crisp and sharp shimmer, due to the clear base.  It is also more densely packed with the smaller glitter bits.  So while they prolly look similar when layered over a darker base, the differences are more apparent if used on its own.

I applied Stairway to Heaven over a coat of Chanel's Pearl Drop - so that I don't have to apply more than 2 coats of the former.

Overall, I love the understated but yet shimmery finish of this colour combination.

    Photos & Swatches:

Deborah Lippmann polishes can be purchased from:

luxola.com [based in Singapore, next day delivery, though a little pricey, and colors might be limited]

revolveclothing.com [based in US, free international shipping with USD$100 orders and above, prices are cheaper]

ebay [just do a search on the various sellers, see who is legit, and ships internationally, I have bought from ebay a couple of times, no problem at all]

Hong Kong [lane crawford stores - if you want to see them in person]

That's all, and thank you for looking.

Nails Story: Deborah Lippmann & Lady Gaga "Edge of Glory" Nail Lacquer Set [Photos & Swatches]

When I first saw news of this Deborah Lippmann nail polish duo on Karla Sugar, I knew somehow, I had to get it.  Thankfully, the duo is on sale for USD$29 (original price is USD$40). Unfortunately, it is only exclusively available at Barneys.com, which happens to ship to most countries (the shipping fee is quite insane!!!!) .  I managed to round up a few girls to purchase this too, so we could share the shipping (stil expensive, but to a level were we can justify the purchase).  I was very happy when the package arrived within a week.

This is truly a nail polish collector's item - I love Lady Gaga, and I love Deborah Lippmann, so when they come together in the form of a gorgeous nail polish set, I MUST have it.

The box that the polishes come in is a super cute black box with very cool graphic.

The duo consists of a black creme nail polish, and a holographic flakey topcoat.  The flakey topcoat has predominantly red and blue flakes, and somehow they also have a green/ yello sheen.  I also spotted a few glitter bits.  My pictures do not capture all the complex goodness of these topcoat.  I have my whole range of Inglot flakies and a few Essie topcoats, but no dupes at all for this special topcoat.

The black creme nail polish is very smooth, and super black without any purple/ green undertones.  2 even coats gave perfect jet black payoff.

Lots of photos and swatches below:

Nails Story: Deborah Lippmann's Glitter in the Air [Photos & Swatches]

    Oooo!!!

I love how pretty this is, and I am glad I managed to get this from ebay (about S$25 after shipping, just search for it on ebay).

Glitter in the Air is a loosely packed glitter nail polish, and the glitter bits are suspended in a sheer baby blue base.  It just looks so soft and sweet, and yet kind of edgy and chic.  Me loves!  It is a little hard to find on major sites where you buy Deborah Lippmann nail polish, but I was happy to get it quite easily enough on ebay.  It was just a spur of the moment purchase, and I am loving it how cute it looks.

I am thinking of buying a frilly girly cupcake stand to house my pretty nail polish...just leave some of them around on display.  When I find the perfect stand, I shall do that.

    Photos & Swatches:

    No topcoat, no basecoat.

I did apply a thin layer of Sephora for OPI Havana Dreams as a sheer color base for the Deborah Lippmann nail polish.  Havana Dreams is the exact same shade of sheer blue.   I did this layering because I want to avoid any bald patches or streaks when I apply Glitter in the Air.

The overall look is a jelly baby blue base, with some bits of light pink and blue glitter bits (both big and small bits) floating about because they are not too densely packed.

    LOVE LOVE LOVES!!!

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for looking!

Nails Story: Essie Luxe Effects Collection [Photos, Swatches & Comparisons]

Love this whole collection, so I had to get them all!

Warning ahead: There are 24 pictures in this entry.  After much editing, and swatching five nail polishes, so that's what I ended up with.

The Essie Luxe Effects collection is a concise collection of five shades, all sorts of glittery and shimmery goodness that are best worn over a base color, and in this entry, I am showing you how the colors look like over a nude base, and also over a darker base.  Jennifer has this collection swatched over a black base color, so you can also check out her entry for how these topcoats look like.  (link here!!)

    Photos & Swatches:

I applied all the Essie shades over two coats of Deborah Lippmann Stormy Weather & Fashion.

As Gold As It Gets - clear base with golden shimmery bits (some are very fine, and some are bigger)  very subtle, and very cute, I would much prefer to wear this over a pale base or a bright red.

Pure Pearlfection - similar to As Gold As It Gets, except it is a white silvery shimmery bits in a clear base, and they are more or less of the same size - quite fine.   This would look great over darker bases, in my opinion.  Like a dark indigo blue, or a black base.

Shine of the times - a flakie yess!  And it looks exactly like my Inglot 202, again, Jennifer has a great comparison entry (link here), and I also have compared it to my Inglot 202.  They are 99% identical, you don't need both, for sure.  What I love about the Essie one is how smooth, and densely packed the flakies are.  One even coat is all you need for maximum shine/ effect.

    Comparison

A Cut Above - a pink glittery polish in a clear base, and it has big and small bits.  It is very dense and smooth.  I love love this kind of glitter topcoat over a creamy nude base color.

    Comparison

Deborah Lippmann's Some Enchanted Evening is a lighter pink, and it seems to contain some multi-color shimmer that is lacking in A Cut Above, still, when applied on the nails, they are 90% similar, and having one of either is sufficient.  And the essie one seems really more dense.

And lastly -- this might be my absolute fave among this fantastic collection -

Set in Stones - varying sizes of silvery glitter in clear base.  I don't think I have anything like this - I have holographic ones, but nothing that is just a silvery glitter.  It would look awesome over Blue Satin, and any black creamy base.  I think it would be awesome over a silver base too.

    Comparison

Deborah Lippmann's I Love The Nightlife -- is a darker silver and contains only single size big glitter bits in a base coat.  Not the same, but I shall swatch them side by side anyway.   Both are gorgeous in their own ways, and I love them all.

We placed our mega Essie order from 8ty8.com (not sure if this is the exact site, but google it to confirm), and many many thanks to Jenn and also Kim for ordering and collecting the nail polish!   I also replenished some necessities, like my Nail Tek II base, and Seche VIte topcoats which I will not be showing in any haul entry.

Hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!

Nails Story: Deborah Lippmann's I Love the Nightlife [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi

I purchased two Deborah Lippmann nail polishes from revolveclothing.com (around S$20--23 each) and here is one of them - I love the Nightlife.  It is a pewter glitter polish, and only contain the large bits that kind of look like sequins when you paint them over a base color, and I don't think I have anything like this in my stash.

So if you want to purchase Deborah Lippmann nail polish (besides Luxola.com) you can try ordering from RevolveClothing.com - the only catch is you need to hit USD100 per order to get free international shipping.  I got my order within ten days, and everything is wrapped securely.

    Photos & Swatches:

You can see very clearly that there is only the one size glitter ones in this polish --  and I also painted it over a coat of Deborah Lippmann's Stormy Weather --- this eventually became my Xmas weekend nail polish combination.

I really like this glittery silver topcoat!  And I am getting very addicted to Deborah Lippmann & Essie nail polishes!

    You will see why!

    Thanks for looking!

Nails Story: Deborah Lippmann's Brick House [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi

I purchased two Deborah Lippmann nail polishes from revolveclothing.com (around S$20--23 each) and here is one of them - Brick House - from the brand's fall collection.  It is a coppery metallic shade, and I don't think I have anything like this in my stash.  The formula is great, and two coats gave me full payoff.

So if you want to purchase Deborah Lippmann nail polish (besides Luxola.com) you can try ordering from RevolveClothing.com - the only catch is you need to hit USD100 per order to get free international shipping.  I got my order within ten days, and everything is wrapped securely.
