About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Dior Summer 2013 Bird of Paradise Collection 001 PINK GLOW [Photos & Comparisons]

Dior Summer 2013 Bird of Paradise Collection features a must get Bronzer & Blush duo... it is the perfect pairing of a blush and a bronzer, and this pair of shades will soon become my everyday face accompliment.

This summer, Dior introduces a multi-faceted product that provides all the tools for achieving fresh-faced beauty. A unique hybrid of bronzing powder and high-pigment blush, Dior’s signature cannage patterned compact holds a quartet of bronzy shades and bright tones ideal for illuminating the complexion and sculpting cheekbones. The iridescent harmonies blend seamlessly to create a multi-dimensional effect, while complementary light and dark shades provide subtle highlighting and define the natural contours of the face.

I love all my Dior summer bronzers from previous years, and this no exception.  This retails for $90 (9.5g) as compared to last year's bronzer (10g, $70+, go figure).  But if you buy this at airport DFS it's $76 each.
The bronzer/ blusher duo comes with a velvet pocket pouch and its own kabuki brush - which is very good quality by the way.  They are great to include in your makeup bag should you need to touch up during the day.

Here's a closer look:   The embossing is just exquisite.

and a swatch of both shades side by side.
I think I will try to get my hands on Coral Glow if I have the chance..

As you can see my Dior Bronzers from last summer are very very very well loved.
They are that kind of bronzers which is perfect for my light skintone.  The powder is so fine, and very soft.  I would compare these to my Guerlain bronzers and blushes.

A comparison of Dior bronzers from the past 3 seasons.  They are all very similar no doubt.  I like they are are not shimmery and yet not entirely matte.  They give my skin the most natural warmth, and I just LOVE LOVE LOVE them.

Hope this entry is helpful, and thank you for reading!

Saks.com Haul: Lancome Blush Subtil Palette 126 Nectar Lace

So I ordered a few items from Saks.com with my friend, and among my order is this gorgeous Lancome blush palette, which will not be making its way to Singapore Lancome counters.   I had to try one for myself, this retails for USD42, and contains a trio of bronzer, blush and a cheek highlight shade.

The texture of this blush palette is beyond amazing, it is so super smooth, and so soft...and best of so, so pigmented, especially the blush shade.  I think the shade I have picked, Nectar Lace, is the prettiest among the 6 shades released.  The middle shade is a orangey peachy pink shade, and it contains super pretty golden shimmer.

The bronzer and highlight shade has a lovely sheen, and the colors are subtle and perfect for contouring purposes.

This is really a great buy, and if you have the chance, definitely pick up one of these Blush Subtil Palette!

Some product description extracted from the website:

    Face Sculpting & Illuminating
    All-In-One Contour, Blush & Highlighter

126 Nectar Lace - Left (Contour): Matte tan Center (Blush): Shimmery pinky coral Right (Highlight): Pale gold shimmer

    Backstage Beauty Tips:
    • Apply Blush Subtil Palette using the educational leaflet included or by clicking on the Step by Step link below for the best blush result.

    Benefits & Technology
    • The new generation of powder, silky and creamy for a smooth even application.   Won’t settle into lines or pores and never looks powdery on skin.
    • Builds from sheer to intense coverage.  Blends seamlessly.
    • 8-hour wear. Stays color true and does not fade.
    • Dermatologist tested.  Allergy tested.  Fragrance-free.

    Swatches:

and here's how it looks like on my cheeks.

I went a little overboard, and I had to blend out the cheek color - in case if your wondering why it looks patchy/ uneven.

It is really pigmented, best to use a light hand, and apply in layers to build to the intensity you desire.

and another LOTD where I am not sporting any eye color.

I highly recommend this blush palette, and especially this color!

Hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading. :)

    LOTD: Nude & Neutral

    Hi hi,

I can't wait to go for my vacay.  Like in, less than 48 hours.  So psyched, it's unbelievable - going to TW (I have never been there), and travelling with great like-minded companions...and we have planned out everything, so the trip is going to be packed with all sorts of fun!

Anyway, today I was heading out for my manicure, at Kimberly's and so I thought I would do up this LOTD which is quite natural, and using mostly very nude shades.  I will bring you through the main steps, and what I did or how I applied the products.

I recently received the Bobbi Brown Long Wear Even Finish foundations to try out, and based on the couple of times I have used it, this seems to be a foundation that is great for people like me with oily/combination skin.  It is quite matte, and does last quite well throughout the day.  I will do a proper full review entry after I have used this longer.  In case you are curious, the shade I am using is 0.5 Warm Porcelain (the other shade which I will try just to see if it suits me, is 0 Porcelain which is slightly cooler in tone).

These are the main colors I used on my face today.

    Eyes:

I used NARS eyeshadow primer, followed by Burberry eyeshadow in Trench (matte bone color) all over my eyelids, focusing more on the browbone area.  Then I used Burberry eyeshadow in Rosewood all over my lids.  Note that the eyeshadows are really soft, and nice to blend.  I probably overblended, and I intentionally blended up quite high upwards.  The placement of colors is rather casual, and slightly messy.  This is followed by the usual eyeliner, eyelash application, filling in the brows and so on.  I wanted to use just a pair of Ardel 120 on its own... but I am too used to these thick voluminous lashes lately, one single pair of Ardel just doesn't do it for me anymore.

For my face, I used a kabuki brush to dust the Dior Nude bronzer all over my forehead, and sides of my face.  I think that this is a good way to make your face look less flat, without looking like you have actually 'contoured' the hollow parts of your face (well, I don't think there is any hollowness to my flat round face....) so, anyway, yup.. then I used the D&G Nude Blush just on the apples of my cheeks. Both the blush an bronzer complimented each other very well.  I love love these two face products at the moment.  The quality is immaculate, and I am really enjoying using them.

As for lips, I went for Dior Addict Extreme in the shade 326 Incognito, which is a natural nude shade, my lips but better.

    close up eye

    All products used:

base - ettusais bb cream, bobbi brown foundation, set with la mer loose powder

    concealer - cle de peau

cheeks - Dior Nude bronzer in Zenith, D&G Nude Blush

eyes - NARS eyeshadow primer, Burberry Trench, Burberry Rosewood

liners and brows - MAC Lord it Up on lower lash line, Heavy Rotation liquid liner,  Shu Uemura brow pencil, Bobbi Brown natural brow shaper

lips - Dior Extreme Addict Incognito

    my holiday manicure

[Kimberly did this set of ikat print nails for me, to contact her for appointments,

click on her FB page, http://www.facebook.com/Kims.Nails.by.Kim]

    and all our manicures

Not too sure if I have enough time to post any more entries after this, and I don't schedule any pre-written ones, so it might be a short while before I will get back into the updates, and sharing of new stuff.  Follow me on instagram for lots of updates, LOTD, OOTD when I am in TW!

That's all, and thanks for reading!

NARS Gaiety Blush [Swatches, Comparisons & LOTD]

    Hi!

I purchased NARS Gaiety Blush (from their Spring 2012 collection) through my gf in Hong Kong.  It is a matte bright pink blush, not too cool toned.  It is described as 'bright candy pink' on the NARS site.  I personally think it is quite wearble on me, and gives a nice pop of color without looking too clownish.  It doesn't look as bold at other NARS hot pink blushes (think Desire - which is described as a delicate pink - I have seen the blush before in stores, it is a pretty bold pink color)

The texture is fine, and not as super duper intensely pigmented like some of the other NARS blushes.

I have been wearing this blush for the past week (most days anyway), and I just dust it on my cheeks with a kabuki blush.

This blush immediately reminded me of Dior's Spring 2012 blush, which is the Rosy Glow.  They look really similar in the pan though, as shown below:

Swatched next to each other, the Dior shade seems a tad lighter, more pastel as compared to the NARS Gaiety. But then again, the Dior powder is a little color adjusting, and warms up as I wear it throughout the day.

A quick LOTD showing the blush in action:

Foundation: Shiseido white lucent target base, Guerlain Gold foundation, Lancome Teint Miracle Loose Powder

Lips: Tom Ford Blush Nude (mixed with a little of Illamasqua Sonnet lipstick) --- not liking this combo, too matte and dry, and too nude, I think I am used to wearing super glossy moisturising lipsticks of late.

Eyes: base Laura Mercier Flax, base GA ETK in #13, Dior palette in Bleu de Paris, Liners Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Sapphire, Clinique Lower Lash Mascara

Concealer - Laura Mercier secret camouflage concealer - I love it very much, but it is not not my HG like the Cle de Peau stick concealer

Blush: NARS Gaiety - I slapped this on with Chanel Kabuki brush, quite liberally

That's all and thanks for looking.

Soap & Glory Love at First Blush [Photos & Swatches]

    Hi hi,

this entry will feature Soap & Glory makeup, in particular the Love at First Blush - a multi shade shimmer powder. It reminds me of Benefit boxed powders (Sugarbomb!!!), you know, shimmery blushes that contain various segments of complimenting colours.  I won't expect Soap & Glory to come up with 50 different shades of blush, but something like this, that has a range of shades which will no doubt suit most skintones.

The packaging is very typical of Soap & Glory products, girly pink with the vintage pin-up appearance.  The blush is housed in a cardboard casing, secured with a magnetic closure.  The blush compact also comes with a mirror (no brush).  It is not the most intensely pigmented blush, but a nice swirl across all the shades and dusted onto my cheeks give a pretty pinky glow that is not overpowering, and very flattering.

I think the Soap & Glory makeup range will eventually come to Sephora (they seem to be expanding their line each time drop by Sephora) --- so it is only a matter of whether everyone asks and 'begs' SephoraSg (I notice from their FB they seem to like people to really stalk and begging them to bring this in, and that in --- well, I think Sephora will be stocking Laura Mercier from March 2012, that's good news we can use for once!)  enough for them to finally bring in the full range of products including the makeup.  Even in the UK, these makeup products are relatively new.

    LOTD & UK Swap Goodies

Last week, I received a package that made me very very happy!  In the last week of Dec, Jennifer and I agreed to do a swap, she is based in UK, and wanted to try out BB creams, and so I suggested that I could send her a bunch of BB creams and other Asian goodies to try out while she could pick whatever she thinks I would love to try out from the UK (I did request for a few Barry M pencils which my youngest sis LOVES and the Collection2000 concealer which EVERYONE seems to rave about), and well, I am beyond happy to receive more than those and especially stuff which we can't have yet here in Singapore.

In this entry, I will give a quick overview of the goodies I got, and in subsequent separate entries, I will show you swatches and applications close up pictures.  I am also showing a quick LOTD using most of these items, except for the nail polish and Barry M liners.

Nails Inc. Base coat & Quick Dry Topcoat

    Soap & Glory products:

    - Off Your Face cleansing clothes

    - Love at First Blush

    - Super Fabu Lipstick

Major EXCITED!!  Soap & Glory makeup products!!!!!

    Collection2000 liquid foundation & concealers

Jennifer and I are about the same shade in our bases, so it was easy for her to pick something that matches me.

    Here is my LOTD,

using the Collection2000 liquid foundation, the concealer under my eyes and on my spots (I set it with my Ettusais Loose Powder)

the Soap & Glory blush and lipstick,

    Chanel's Epatant

Stay tuned for swatches and more photos coming up next!

Tarte Amazonian Clay Long-Wear Blush in Tipsy

Recently, I managed to get one of the Tarte Amazonian Long-Wear Blush from US Sephora [special thanks to Jolyn for helping me purchase it because she saw one of my tweets that I wanted to get my hands on one of these].   Can't remember the exact cost, but this was purchased during the Sephora 20% off sale or something.  I can't remember, but it cost about S$30.

The color I got is Tipsy, a orangey coral color.

The Tarte Amazonian Clay blushes are rather hyped in the beauty community, and if you want to see more colors, reviews and swatches, click on the links below:

Information & Review from The Makeup And Beauty Blog

    Product information from Sephora website

    Swatches on KarlaSugar

    MakeupbyTiffanyD video review

    From the Sephora site:

    What it is:
A long-wearing, solar-baked blush that lasts up to 12 hours.

    What it does:
Infused with natural clay harvested from the banks of the Amazon River and naturally baked by the sun, this nutrient-rich blush benefits all skin types for a fade-free flawless finish for an amazing 12 hours. Inspired by Tarte's best-selling shades of cheek stains and lip tints, the colors range from soft to vivid to suit a wide variety of skintones. For oily skin types, Amazonian clay minimizes oil in and around pores to balance skin and keep product in place. Those with dry skin will benefit from the clay's nourishing and hydrating properties, which naturally restore skin's moisture. Combination skin types can rely on its ability to zero in on skin concerns and deliver benefits to restore complexion harmony. The result? Blush that wears better, longer, and truer!

    What it is formulated WITHOUT:
    - Parabens
    - Sulfates
    - Synthetic Fragrances
    - Petrochemicals
    - Phthalates
    - GMOs
    - Triclosan

What else you need to know:
This blush features the following Skinvigorating™ ingredients:
    - Vitamins A and E, two natural preservatives that act as anti-inflammatory emollients and protect against free radical damage
    - Vitamin C, an antioxidant that fights free radical damage and prevents oxidative stress and premature signs of aging, while brightening the skin
    - Amazonian clay, a nutrient-rich, multitasking, skin-balancing clay that reduces dryness and flakiness, improves skin clarity, elasticity, firmness, and texture while removing oil from the skin's surface for smooth application and wear

The blush itself is quite pigmented, what you see in the following pictures are light/ blended swatches:

If you have the chance, do check out these blushes!  I like that the packaging of the blush is the color of the product itself... and if I didn't already have too much blushes, I would love to collec them all.  :)

    Thanks for looking!

Haul: Illamasqua [Nail Varnish, Blush & Matte Primer]

I bought these illamasqua goodies from a "blink and you will miss it" spree organised by MissJo-Spree [thanks to Hydaia & Joanna!!], because there was a 25% code going on, which means mega savings on these goodies!  I get really excited by illamasqua hauling, because they are rather hard to come by, and they always have such unique shades which appeal to me.   And I also appreciate the artwork on their packaging, just check out the sketches on the box above there.

You can buy illamasqua products here [they ship internationally for a flat rate of 8.50 pounds]

And that's the only thing I got from their latest TOXIC NATURE collection - the Nail Varnish Duo.

    Stagnate - Grey Mauve

Radium - Acidic Lime, shimmer finish ** LOVE at first swatch!!!

Two more nail polish [that's when I realised the initial 15% became 25% hahaha]

Brigitte - JUICY hot pink * NOW I KNOW WHY JUICY -- they should describe it as JELLY.

I am waiting for Brigitte to grow on me, it looks more like a juicy jelly red instead of hot pink :)

    Collide - Bright Neon Pink

I don't think it is THAT bright, but it is definitely neon.  And it looks like it might dry a dull finish.  Weird formulation.

And one more blush to the collection - this time, a peachy one.

LOVER - Soft apricot, matte finish

If you are new to Illamasqua, and you want to try them out, I highly recommend going for their blushes first...followed by intense lipgloss, nail varnish, pigment, lipsticks...

and one last item, because I have read reviews about this from Hazel and Christie.  Click HERE AND HERE for their reviews respectively.

Matte Primer - create a flawless base that lasts.

I am very excited with my new stuff, as always.  And I do like to take pictures, swatch products etc.  Too bad there have been instances of my pictures being 'stolen' on other splogs? or watever you call them.  I used to watermark my pictures, but they take time for me to 'stamp' each and every picture, and frankly, pictures with a watermark across or in a discreet corner is just eyesore for me.  If you watermark across the whole picture, then what's the point of showing the product/ color, and if it's in a tiny corner, it can easily be cropped away, so what's the point?  I shall be shameless and take it that people find my pictures great enough for them to steal.  That said, however, I do hope that these 'thieves' at least ask permission? link back to my entry? and also just credit?  Yup, that's about my random rant.

Besides, the point of my blog is for me to ramble about makeup and beauty in general, I write and blog to 'record' what I am enjoying, buying, thinking of and sharing - not for the purpose of 'advertising' though I do realise inadvertently that might have become the effect when it comes to certain entries... but in any case, I just do what I like, what I can, and what I want.  Has always been this way, and will always be.

Just since I am being random - this is the bulk of my illamasqua products - I have the odd eyeshadow palette, pigment, lip products but mainly they are blushes and nail varnishes.

And here is a sneak preview of my face primers overview - I will also be including primers which I have used up before (and LOVE them still) even though they are not in my stash anymore.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

    Benefit's Bella Bamba

Excuse me while I chuckle each time I have to say or type Bella Bamba.  I mean, seriously, that's the funniest thing I have heard.  Someone asks you what blush you are wearing it always has to be some awkward name. "Orgasm", "Deep throat", "Bella Bamba" try saying Bella Bamba 5 times.  You end up with Bimba, Bomba, Bimbo etc etc LOL soooo funny!  I ain't no prude, but why can't blushes be named something more sensible, like Sugarbomb, or Coralista, or even My Highland Honey?

Nonetheless, I want to get this Bella Bamba.  We all ordered one each online at the benefit US site, it works to barely S$38!  And this retails for S$55 at our retail counters!  In general, I quite like Benefit boxed powders, I think they have nice finish and colors, and very buildable.

    My other Benefit boxed powders:

BB is described as the triple dimension of pink, brightening, sculpting and defining.  Sweep on the apples of your cheeks and dot at the hairline for a total thrill of dimensional colour.

Is it like NARS Orgasm? I have some comparisons below!  Keep reading!

By the way, BB comes with its own mirror, and contains 8g of product, compared to the rest, which are ard 12g.  And SAME PRICE!  What gives??!

Some swatches - BB might be closer to Deep Throat, which I don't have now with me to compare.
Did I mention that Bella Bamba (LOL) smells lovely too?
    Thanks for looking!
