About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

Recent Favourite Combinations [Foundation, Makeup Removal & Hair!]

    Hi hi!

It's starting to feel so rare that I am able to blog ramble on a weekday.  Even during the weekends, I hardly have any time to just sit and attend to blog matters, but when life catches up with you, I guess I just can't get out of it.  So for those who have noticed the recent 'absence', I do apologise, and I hope that the usual blog spam will happen soon.  I hope.  I hope.  Because I have so many things to share!

Just want to feature a few products which I have been liking lately, they are a little all over the place and I think that's the way I prefer to present this entry.   Hope you enjoy - there's some skincare, makeup and hair!

First off, we have this set of makeup removal and cleansing products.  I have been using the Shu Uemura clear brightening gentle cleansing oil.  I feel like this compliments my current (still Lancome) skincare rountine.  It cleans off my makeup completely, and it is very lightweight.  I didn't like the deep pore cleansing oil so much (the pink one btw) but this I really love.  I don't think I need to go too much into the efficiency of the Shu Uemura cleansing oils, and I always have one or two of them in my stash.  If you are looking for something that really takes off the heavy duty makeup after a long day, this is really a great performer.

As you know I usually keep 2 - 3 facial cleansers in my bathroom.  While I love my creamy foamy cleansers, I also like to try out 'alternative' cleansing products.  Namely cleansing balms - they are very big in the UK - and I like the idea of a cleansing balm.  It is supposed to be very calming, cleansing and when used with a muslin cloth, even exfoliating.  I have heard great raves about the Emma Hardie amazing face cleansing balm.  I ordered mine from feelunique and here's  the product information -

Perfectly balanced daily cleansing for skin that craves clean.

Benefits of Emma Hardie Amazing Face Natural Lift and Sculpt Moringa Cleansing Balm:
    - Thoroughly cleanses and moisturises the skin.
    - Helps to purify and minimises the appearance of open pores.
    - Calming for sensitive skin.
    - Revitalising for dull and mature skins.
    - Can be used as a rescue balm, i.e. on dry elbows or knees, or as a lip balm.
    - Doubles as a soothing mask if left on the skin for ten minutes.

Key ingredients and what they do:
    - Moringa seed extract, Wild Sea Fennel and Vitamin E: Balance, purify and help to minimise the appearance of open pores.
    - Orange, Neroli and Mandarin extracts: Rejuvenates and revitalises the skin.
    - Jasmine, cedarwood and Rose: Helps to recondition dull, dry, dehydrated and mature skins.

I don't use it with a muslin cloth though -- but I have just ordered some from feelunique in a separate order, and I shall try it out soon.  I really love this - it is so soothing, and so luxe and smells really awesome.  Even I just massage this into my skin, it just leaves my skin feeling so soft, and clean after rinsing.   It looks a little messy from the picture below, there's this layer of oil (Moringa I think) and smells really relaxing.
This is always sold out at feelunique, so grab it while you can!

And another item which I recently discovered is the Ettusais peeling milk - this is a gentle exfoliator that doesn't have any scrubby beads.  I have this for quite some time.  When I got to learn about its properties at a Ettusais event a couple of weeks ago, I came home, and quickly took it out to try.
Basically it is a milky liquid that you rub onto dry skin, and it will rub off the dead skin cells.  I particularly like to rub it around my nose area, that seems to be the most 'tough' area, and after I rinse my face, the skin feels super smooth.  I usually follow up with a extra nourishing mask or face cream, cos that's when the skin is in the best condition to absorb products.  Highly recommend this product if you are looking for a different sort of skin exfoliator.

Next, a couple of hair products.  I have other hair products to feature -but I will mention those in a products I have used up entry.  But here, we have a new shampoo which I have been using and loving for the past couple of ... days.  haha.  I saw this earlier in the week while I was at Guardian.  It is Ancient Secrets Moroccan Argan shampoo.  And it is only about $11 or $13 - very affordable. So far, I love everything about this shampoo.  It leaves my hair super soft, not weighed down at all and even more shiny.  I normally don't use any conditioner after shampoo cos I like the squeaky clean hair feeling after shampoo.  This leaves my hair clean without being 'too squeaky' if you know what I mean.

And one some days, when I feel like I need to make my hair look a little more sleek, or when I want my hair ends to be more tame (esp after a big DIY blow dry), I will rub a tiny drop of the TONI&GUY Shine Gloss Serum just at the ends of my hair.  It is a great lightweight hair gloss serum, that makes your hair super shiny, and also tame flyaways.

These are some cheek products which I am rotating this week.  Finally, I am able to tear myself away from the URBAN DECAY NAKED FLUSHED palette.  I decided to break out the Guerlain 4 seasons terracotta bronzer in 00 Nude - it is the perfect bronzer for my light complexion.  It gives the perfect amount of warmth to my skin without being visible.  The powder is so smooth, and it blends into the skin just amazingly.  I would compare this to my DiorSkin Nude Tan bronzers - very natural, and very very fine quality.  They are very similar with their quadrants of pale bronzing shades.  LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Next, is a scary bright red blush - I just have to dab ever so slightly into this blush - MAC Devil powder blush - it is a pro only shade though.  It makes my face looks healthy, and I just buff it into oblivion onto my cheeks, so I end up with a very naturally warm flushed cheeks - you can't even tell that I am wearing a RED blush.

Note that I have just shown below very very light swatch - this is a really pigmented blush, and I always proceed with caution.  Hehe.

And next, I am loving this pair of base products.

I have been trying out and loving the MAQUiLLAGE Perfect BB Base.  It is very smooth, and lightweight.  I love how it evens out my skintone. I will give this a full review in a separate entry, so you can see how it applies on me.

And finally, I recently ordered the Revlon Nearly Naked foundation (at drugstore.com via spree).  I just eyeballed the shade online...and it turned out to be a just perfect match for me.  I could probably go half a shade lighter, but it's nothing some setting powder can't fix.
Like the name suggests, it feels like nothing on my skin, and yet it makes my skin look very smooth after I applied it over the base.  And it lasted on me very well throughout the hot and humid days.  I would even compare this to NARS Sheer Glow in terms of the consistency and finish.  Highly recommend this foundation.  And it is so affordable!

I hope that this entry is helpful and somewhat interesting!

Just want to rant about something I came across today.  I received an email from a certain company, asking me where's my blog entry for xxx product, because she didn't see it on my blog....well, that's because I haven't posted it yet.  (DUH)
Was it intentional?  No.  I simply have no time to be switching products all the time.  When I am busy, I always just fall back on whatever is on my table.  I don't recall signing up for deadlines when they want to send this xxx product to me.  I will mention it when I am ready to feature it, after having used it.  I have never subjected myself to some deadline crunching blogging/ reviews and I have a million of other blog entry ideas of my own without having to accept "FREE" products to sustain my blog. For some reason, I got very peeved by this kindly email reminder.  I am in a good mind to send back this xxx product, and tell the person that when I am ready to try it out, I would jolly well fork out my own $18.90 to buy it, and use it if I want to.

Well, that's just a temporary mood damper..I would just continue doing whatever I do, and ramble on whatever comes to my mind.

Thanks for reading, and staying through to the end of this longish entry!

Can't wait for the weekend already.

The Body Shop Moisture White Shiso BB Cream [Photos & Review]

    Hi hi

Just a quick review of the new The Body Shop Moisture White Shiso BB Cream, it contains 25 SPF PA+++.

It comes in one shade, and retails for S$39.90.  Available from 4 March 2013.

    Product description:

The Body Shop Moisture White Shiso BB Cream provides a smooth, fairer-looking complexion. This multi-action make-up base conceals, soothes and evens out skin tone. It contains Shiso extract that helps prevent uneven skin tone, brown spots, and freckles. It’s surely a must-have for every girl’s beauty essentials.

I haven't been using it long enough to know if it really prevents uneven skin tone and all that (and I strongly believe that it takes more than a single product to do the job anyway), but I can share my experience on how the product applies and lasts throughout the day.

The BB cream has a smooth creamy texture.  It has a slight floral scent which disappears after I blended the bb cream into my skin.  I used a buffing brush to apply the bb cream.  It has always been my practice to apply my skincare routine, let it sink in for a few minutes, and then start applying my base products.

I always use a BB cream (a thin layer) as a makeup base.  I find that using a BB cream provides adequate sun protection, and even out my skintone before I apply my foundation (also another thin layer).

The texture of the Moisture White Shiso BB Cream is quite thick and creamy, a pump of it is sufficient for covering my whole face.  I like the texture, and how it blends out into my skintone.  I can't detect any significant coverage, but I can see that my skintone is visibly even-ed out before I apply my foundation.

Here you can see the BB cream blends seamlessly into my skin.  On light makeup days, I will skip the foundation, and just lightly set with loose powder.

I enjoy how the BB cream evens out my skintone, and preps my skin for foundation.  It has a satin radiant finish, and looks fresh throughout the day.  Overall, I do enjoy using it, and I recommend it if you are looking for a whitening BB cream in  the mid-price range (I don't have exact prices, but I am guessing it retails for over $30).

Just a pic to show the overlook of my makeup on a typical day, pardon the blurry look, but this is how I roll on a day to day basis, just brows, good base, and cheeks.  I guess even in this hastily taken pic, you can see the radiant finish of my skin - due to several other products too, I have no doubt.  Hehe...

Bottomline: A decent performer in the BB cream market, at a pocket friendly price.  The consistency and quality is well worth the price tag.  Do check it out at all The Body Shop stores soon!

I hope my overview is useful, and thank you for reading!

Review & Application: Dior Capture Totale Base UV SPF50 PA+++

    Hi hi

This shall be my review of the new Dior Capture Totale Base which I have been using for the past week or so.   It is currently available at all Dior counters and retail for S$100 each. It is made in France and contains 40ml of product.

First let's start with a quick overview of the Dior Capture Totale science:

    THE NEW CAPTURE TOTALE:
    A PROFOUND BEAUTY REVOLUTION

FOR THE 1ST TIME AT DIOR, AN ANTI-AGEING TREATMENT THAT TARGETS THE DEEPEST STEM CELLS, IN WHICH SKIN DENSITY AND SUPPORT ORIGINATE

In 2013, Dior has gained even more knowledge on stem cells. For the 1st time, a new population of stem cells with extraordinary powers of regeneration has been brought to light: hypodermic stem cells.

These cells are the starting point for the biological lines, defined as "biological seams", that cross the skin from the deepest layer to the surface. But with time, these seams, or chains, composed of millions of cells that structure the global youth of a face, become deformed and break. The face then loses its ideal lines.

Thanks to this unprecedented breakthrough, CAPTURE TOTALE treatments recreate a solid foundation for the skin under the impetus of these hypodermic stem cells. The face is once again graced with dense, structured skin and perfect support.

REVOLUTIONARY AND UNRIVALLED STEM CELL EXPERTISE AT DIOR

For the past ten years, the Dior Science has continued to push the limits of its knowledge of stem cells, these rare and precious cells with unlimited regenerative powers.

In 2008, the fundamental role of stem cells in epidermal cellular renewal was brought to light.

In 2011, the Dior Science team revealed that epidermal stem cells transmit cellular messengers. Their sphere of beneficial influence extends to all neighbouring cells including those of the dermis. Beneath their influence, the skin produces more matter (keratin, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid).

Today, CAPTURE TOTALE has gone even further and has, for the 1st time, brought to light the key role of a new population of stem cells with extraordinary regenerative powers: hypodermic stem cells. From the deepest level of the skin, these cells create a foundation that allows for the construction of dense, perfectly structured skin.

CAPTURE TOTALE PROVIDES GLOBAL ACTION ACROSS THE SKIN, FROM THE DEEPEST LAYERS, TO THE SURFACE

    Product description:

Exceptional age-defying performance combined with the ultimate in protection.

This light silky UV base provides unique comfort and melts instantly into the skin to:
    1. Correct all visible signs of aging through its age-defying action boosted with the Longoza-Cellular Complex
    2. Protect mother calls - deep down and boost their natural radiance through an ultra-powerful shield combining broad spectrum UVA/UVB filters - to provent the appearance of dark spots due to UV rays. With this maximum protection, the skin becomes visibly smoother and more radiant.  Day after day, the complexion becomes more even and youthfully luminous with a perfect finish.

    Swatches:

The product has a pale beigy pink shade, and it blends perfectly into my skintone, with a slight brightening effect.  I also noticed that it makes my skin look smoother.  It is very comfortable to wear, and I do enjoy the light creamy texture.  I tried applying it with my fingers, but prefer to use a brush to blend it into my skin.

Here you can see how the product blends out.

    The Application & Coverage -

As I mentioned, the base is easy to apply with a brush, the consistency is very smooth.   The coverage is very sheer and light.  If you just want a high spf suncreen that also evens out your skintone, you really can get away with just this alone.  It also feels quite moisturising.  It lasts a good part of the day, but not the entire work day for me.  Hence on the second day I tried it, I used a liquid foundation over it -- the Dior Nude foundation - I didn't want to take away the natural coverage, but I needed something a little more lasting, hence the layering of foundation on top.  This combination gives me a  fresh coverage that lastes for 8 hours or so.  The coverage is still on the lighter side, but I felt safer in terms of coverage than wearing the base alone.  I also have the Totale Capture foundation.. but like I mentioned, I wanted to test this base out with a more natural finish foundation, hence I went for the Nude foundation.

    Applying the base -

    Applying the liquid foundation -

I got to apologise for the lighting in these pictures, the camera was somehow washing me out in every pic even though I didn't change anything in terms of the setting and my photo-taking location.

Another extreme close up -- this is taken after lunch, and a walk in the HOT SUN - I must say, the base is pretty powerful in offering sun protection, and I can certainly do with the anti-aging and anti-dark spots properties.

Everything else on the face is Dior - the Diorsnow concealer, Bronzer in Aurora, and worn off lipstick in Incognito.

    Bottomline -

I do enjoy the base, but I don't find it extraordinary in terms of any anti-aging results but then again it is not as though I am on a total anti-aging regime right now, and given the fact that I am only using this for a week, it's too early to tell.  I can only comment for sure on the finish, feel and lasting power. This base is great for providing impressive sun protection (50SPF PA+++), it has a brightening finish - great if you just want to wear this on its own, and look 'awake'.  Also, if you are looking into anti-aging bases, you can't go wrong with the Dior Capture Totale Base. I also believe that this complements the rest of the Capture Totale range, it is a great addition, very suitable for our hot hot days here. If you just want a 'regular' whitening/ brightening base from Dior, do check out my review on the DiorSnow BB Creme  (featured in this entry here) - that has greater coverage - after all, that's a BB cream, whereas this is a UV base.  Both contains the same amount of SPF though.

I hope this has been helpful, and thank you for reading!

Review: Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion

    Hi hi!

This is an overdue review entry... but I hope it will be helpful anyway.

In this entry, I will be reviewing the new Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion.  For my previous feature entry containing the full detailed product information, click here.

The product retails for S$59 and comes with a refill pack.

I used this everyday for almost 3 weeks, and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed using it.

    In terms of application:

The product is all inside the cushion - or rather a piece of sponge.  How I applied it is that I pressed the puff that comes with the product, and it picks up enough product to use on an area of my face.  I need to go back and forth several times for my face to be evenly covered.  The liquid soaked sponge will deliver the right amount of product when you apply it.   I do like how compact the packaging is, and it is in a solid chic white compact, with a mirror, the puff is stored separately from the cushion itself.  After a week of using the puff, I sort of got tired of this method (took too long) and I switched to dabbing my buffer brush into the cushion to pick up the product - which also works just as well, if not better.  I also find that using the puff kind of mess up the compact, some of the product gets onto the casing, which irks me a little.

In terms of texture and coverage

The Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion is quite unlike any other BB cream type of products I have ever used.  It is very liquidy (which you can feel and also tell when you press the puff onto your face.  The coverage is tinted, very light, and if you have good clear skin, that alone is sufficient as a base for your face.  The high SPF factor is another added advantage for me, so when I am using it, I skip my usual sun protection.

What I really love about this product, and how I use it, is as a makeup base.  I personally prefer more coverage for my daily work and going out, so I will apply a thin layer of the BB Soothing Cushion, then followed by my liquid foundation.  Because my skin is already prepped and evened out by the Laneige BB soothing cushion, I didn't have to use as much foundation.  I noticed that on the days, and the whole week where I was using this as a base, my makeup really did stay on longer, and fresher (and also less oily).  Because it is so light, and liquidy (unlike usual creamy bb creams) I don't feel like I am adding a layer to my foundation routine.  But yet the similar effects are there -making  my foundation last throughout the day, evening out my skintone and all that good stuff.

    My overall thoughts:

My LOTDs from late Jan to early Feb probably featured me using this product as base and I do enjoy using it. The outstanding factor to me, is that it really make my makeup lasts --- and do note, I am not always in air-conditioned comfort and I perspire a lot during the course of the day, but this product also evens out my skintone quite significantly.   For the price and what you get, it is a pretty good deal, and if you are constantly on  the go, and need to touch up, I think this product definitely stands out, it's like you get what you need in a liquid base, in a compact .. and I didn't show any actual product application here.. (well, I did take some pictures of application process, but currently that particular memory card decided to go MIA, so I do apologise for the use of press images -- will most probably update images once I managed to find that set of pictures!).

Click click click to see the above mentioned 'flawless' base I did with the Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion

Lastly, I do recommend you checking out this product - have a swatch at the counter to see the product for yourself.  You will be quite intrigued by the texture, and also the finish of the Snow BB Soothing Cushion.

I hope this has been helpful, and thanks for looking!!
