About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog 5 years ago to share my love for makeup, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly, and about 1.5 million as of Nov 2011.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

A Velvety Chanel Haul [Lipstick, Nail Polish & LOTD]

I picked up 2 Chanel items yesterday from their new collection.  The new range of lipstick, Rouge Allure Velvet - which is a 'luminous matte' lip  color.   I think there were 8 or 10 shades, and I know I definitely wanted one or two of them... it's just a matter of narrowing down the shades.. in my mind, I wanted the fushcia and nude color but I ended up picking this wearable coral/ orangey color -- 32 La Ravissante. (S$44 each)

These lipsticks swatched very smoothly on my hands... they are very creamy, and doesn't have a shine/ gloss... yet I won't say they are 100% matte either.  Of course, they look matte if you compare to the other range of lipsticks that have a sheen to them.  So this might turn out to be a matte lipstick that isn't drying.

Then I picked up the new limited edition Matte Topcoat -- this retails for S$32.  To be frank, I am not a fan of matte nail polish, because the matte-ness of the finish doesn't actually last.  Say you apply something oily/ creamy on your hands... and the oils actually just 'soaks' into the matte nail polish, and soon you have a dull sheen on your nails -- kinda like the Illamasqua 'rubbery' nail polish finish.

But when I swatch this matte topcoat over my current color (which has a topcoat over it)  the whole thing turned matte.  I had a cotton pad soaked with a oily makeup remover (from the Chanel BA, and I used it to remove the lipstick swatches) -- I used that cotton pad to swipe over my nail that had the topcoat on it... and it still matte.....so I am quite impressed... and that totally justified picking it up.

I am into painting this matte topcoat over my dark polishes, to give that rich luxurous texture and color.  And the perfect color for this effect is my Chanel Strong.

first impressions of the Chanel Matte Topcoat:

It survived my finger food this evening, greasy fries, curry, and cake.... I washed my hands, and wiped, and the matte nails stayed velvety matte as ever.  And it still stayed perfectly matte after I removed my makeup using Shu Uemura's Cleansing Oil. Impressive ~  ~

Enough of my Chanel rambling, and I shall leave you to enjoy the photos and swatches:

All products from Chanel unless stated otherwise:

Foundation: Ettusais BB cream, Vita Lumiere Aqua 20 Beige, Translucent Loose Powder 010

Oh man, these look amazing! I'm really into that velvety texture at the moment (more "grown-up", you know! and very suited to the English academic environment) so I will definitely have to check these out if I can find them here! I've similarly not been one to hop onto the matte polish bandwagon, but it sounds like that topcoat is a cut above the rest Laughing out loud Yay!

(Also. Dear Chanel: please stop taking all my money. Love, me)

    Hi Sophia,
Finally the matte lippies hit the store! I was there to check out maybe 3 weeks ago but no avail.
Do you like it? I've never owned Chanel lip products so not sure what to expect. I am eyeing on the red one #38 La Fascinante (I don't really wear red lips but I saw youtube tutorials on pin-up girl look and red looks so classy!).

I'm really liking how that Mat Top Coat looks! I'm guessing as the base polish is still considered a gloss the overall manicure tends to last longer then a straight-out matte nail polish? My only pet peeve with matte polishes is how they only seem to last.... a day? Lol

@pureshore - yes, was quite excited to find these new collection at the counter! And I think this lipstick feels really good, it is not drying and lasted me pretty well throughout eating and talking.

@ Sara - as mentioned, the topcoat lasted me a good weekend (it def could have lasted longer but I wiped off the color as I didn't want anything so dark during the week) but I am very impressed by how matte it stayed despite the greasy food and products my hands came in contact with the whole time!

@ Jennifer - I know, right! However, I would like to think that I am very restrained with it comes to this little haul, otherwise, I would have grabbed more and that means more $$$ out of my purse! The velvety finish of both the lips and nails are so chic for fall, and I think you should def check out the lippies! Smiling
