About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Trimmed my Brows & Little Haul

    Hi hi!

So I went for my brow trimming session today, and the last time I trimmed my brows was maybe last Nov last year.  It has been almost 3 months, or more?  Anyway, so I was at the shop today, and my gf said I should totally take before/ after pictures.  And these pictures were taken with my BB, so the quality isn't fantastic.... and the lighting is also rather glaring, which flashes out my skin color etc etc.. but you get the general idea.

This is before the trimming. All brow products are wiped off, before the trimming and plucking start. As you can see, my brows are bushy (wow, I never know this would be a word to describe my brows one day.. haha) but the hairs are fine.  However, the basic shape of the brows  is still intact, and I was able to continue filling in my brows as usual.

15 minutes and some clever trimming and plucking later, this is what I got.  Which isn't very very very obvious... but perhaps you can see that the hairs are neater and shorter.  All stray hairs have been plucked too.  And you might notice that my brows aren't that equal... one side seems to be neater, while the other is a little sparse in some parts.

But all that can be changed and adjusted by filling in the brows.

Yup, so I strongly believe in getting your brows professionally groomed every few months, and you can DIY the maintaining yourself.

And then after my brow session, we went hanging out, and I ended up buying a manly shirt at Zara (not going to be featured in this entry), a new liquid foundation, and a new face cream.

I finished my old fade out cream a long time ago, and never repurchased it, and thought this would be a good time to try out this with the SPF.

And my first Estee Lauder liquid foundation.  The shade which I was matched is 1W1 Bone 17.  I am a little surprised that this is not as expensive as I thought (S$53).  And sometimes the pixiwoo girls do mention this in their tutorials.  I was swatching this foundation at Sephora, and it gives a very nice even and matte coverage.  And it is supposed to be long wearing too, so I have faith in this product!  Don't get me wrong, I still love all my other foundations, I am just kind of a wh**e (for want of a better word) when it comes to switching up my foundations.  If I have my way, I want to get a new MUFE HD foundation, in my shade, Chanel Pro Lumiere, La Mer cream foundation, etc.  Seriously.  I want to try them all.

P/S: In other updates, I saw Linn today!!!!  At work!!!  But I did not attack her counter... she was on duty serving a customer, discreetly tapped her, and winked winked at her.  LOL.

P/SS:  I will be pimping my lashes soon after CNY.  Watch this space.  :p

WOW! I see you are in search for the holy grail of all holy grail! I can't wait to read your review on this. My mom uses estee lauder and she loves it, plus it is long wearing too! She uses the age-defying foundation. Anyway, you saw linn?! wow! I wonder where she workkkksss.. *wink wink...eeheheh Smiling

    2/09/10

diana - yeah! I am not saying where, but I am sure you know where also.. haha.... has she mentioned in her blog or anywhere else? cos maybe it is better for her to officially announce and invite us to invade her counter. LOL.
I am all for more than one holy grail - esp foundations. The more the better.
I was swatching UD shadows like crazy too.. the Stardust colors and glitter really shout out to me.. and the regular eyeshadows too.. but they were easy to pass up....
I guess I can justify buying foundations, because they are my MU staples and I will eventually use up all of them.. but I can't say the same for eyeshadows. Sticking out tongue

I'm the same about trying new foundation though a part of me is kind of scared that since it's liquid it'll like have a shorter shelf life compared to powder stuff and all. What's more liquid foundations take super long to use up! Though I don't think that stops us from trying out more Laughing out loud Let us know how you find this okay! You've definitely got me lemming for the Dior foundation.. trying to justify the purchase. haha. Plus getting color matched at these counters always seem a bit intimidating to me especially when some SAs are positive they have the right match when you yourself are sure it's not (*ahem* STAGE).

Can't wait for pimped lashes! Giving extensions another go?

    2/09/10

sara - I guess I won't feel intimidated if I seriously want to buy smth instead of just mindless browsing, and I did swatch like crazy the foundation shades at Sephora.... and when I got to the counter, it was just to confirm the color... and I ended up with a shade lighter than what I thought was my color earlier.
And yup, I will be trying out a new lash extensions...perhaps a little more dramatic than the previous ones.

I've seeen Linn tooo! She saw me from afar and was like "heyyyyy!". I think she must be tired, having to work and manage the house - she seemed a little slimmer (can that even be possible???!!!)
Soph: the foundation looks really good - I'm a sucker for frosted glass bottles. I bought their Aeromatte powder quite a long time ago, but unfortunately, the colour wasn't the best for me (after it oxidised). but i did love the texture.

    2/09/10

haha, now you girls are making me can't wait to try the foundation asap !!!

    2/09/10

Kas - I know what you mean by the frosted bottle... it's so very grown-up! Haha..actually I did notice the foundation oxidises a little, and so perhaps it is better that I ended up with a lighter shade. I shall be focusing on whether this foundation is really long wearing as it claims, and also how well it evens out my skin tone overall etc.

Soph: I wonder if its the SPF in these products that hasten the oxidisation process - like if it interferes with the colour. cos when I wear normal sunscreen, i get an awful tone after everything oxidises (thankfully, the Etude House sun guard i use doesn't give me that problem)

    2/09/10

I have never used a separate sunscreen in my MU routine (I depend on my moisturisers/ primer/ foundation) for that SPF kick plus and I avoid the sun as much as I possibly can....
Anyway, and I have noticed that Chanel and MAC foundations do oxidise a little. Not MUFE, Shu nor Dior ones.
But I think as long as the oxidisation is not noticeable, it is ok with me.. in our humid and stuff weather it is nearly impossible to have MU stay perfect for long anyway. Sad

Hmm, I've heard of people getting samples from Estee Lauder. Do you know if they allow that? I'm not sure if I should go for this or the MUFE Stick foundation that Sarah featured on her blog! I might just end up with both again though. Laughing out loud

I have been thinking about using liquid foundation again... and my lemming were Estee Lauder(the one you bought) and lancome... but I'm alittle scare of using it, cos it liquid foundation always clogged into my pores(which I can see pores marks) after afew hrs of wearing it.

SO far... I didn't have any problems with oxidisation... but I do like to get a lighter shade foundation/yellowish undertone.. cos my face abit redish and I need some color to correct it! lolx

    2/09/10

Anonymous Bosch - yea, I am sure they will give samples, though I did not ask for any, and I kind of just "ok, so comfirm this is my shade, yes I will get it" and got out of there ~ Haha... but I noticed that with these counters, like Estee, Clarins, Clinique and also Shu Uemura, they are quite happy with letting you try their samples.

Chantana - maybe the next time I see you I pass you a sample of this foundation and you try it out before you buy the full bottle!

@Anonymous Bosch :Yeah.. I remember that they can give out free sample whether you're buying anything anot.. but I'm not that thick face to just walk up to the counter and ask for one! lolx

This is my 2nd day of using it, I really like the finish. Great coverage for my needs, and stays matte for a good time (I have stubborn oily skin) but yea, keep a lookout for my next product rave!!
