About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Haul! MAC In the Groove Collection (Pictures Heavy)

    Hi hi!

Just to share what I bought from this huge collection which was launched a couple of days ago.

In case you are wondering about prices, each MSF is $47, each blush is $44, and each eyeshadow is $35.

The mad craze for most people was to run out and get Stereo Rose (one of those very rare, collectible status kind of MAC MSFs) and Kas (cocomotion) did put in special effort to be at Tangs early enough on Friday to get this item! So got to thank her very much for helping me get  my hands on Stereo Rose.  Unlike Marine Life powder which was from To the Beach collection -- which I don't get the hype over that at all -- I think that Stereo Rose is a way more user friendly and practical product, you don't get cheated out of the fancy gold overspray after you use that product, and I do actually intend to make full use of Stereo Rose, not just leave it precious and untouched.  :p

We also ordered Stereo Rose from Michelle's MAC spree, so far the status is backordered, so I might have an extra SR coming my way.  I will most likely give it to my sister, as she likes MSFs in general too.

I already own Petticoat from a few years back, when it was released in another earlier collection that never made it to Sg at that time, but I was able to find it when I was in Paris. So even though Petticoat is not part of this haul, it is part of this collection, and I shall show a picture of it anyway.

I also picked up a couple of blushes.  Unlike previous collections when I usually go for the bolder colours (think Intenso, Style Demon, etc) , this time round, I went for the softer shades. A very neutral shade, called Happy Together. I only got this on my 2nd haul trip, where I swatched all the stuff more closely, and took my time to decide.  I was on the fence with this color (thinking it might be in the same family as NARS Albatross, Nico etc) but in the end, I think I might NEED this in my collection.  It's a lovely pale peach color with a light tan side.  The texture is also very smooth and never chalky nor shimmery.

And the other one is Hang Loose,  which is such a lovely cool-toned pink.  I have heard reviews and comparisions of this product to Well-dressed, and since I don't have Well-Dressed, I think I need Hang Loose.

Next, we have the eyeshadow trios.  I seriously think that the eyeshadow trios are very neglected and overlooked in the collection.  The lipsticks, cremesheen glasses, and msfs got most people rushing out for them.  But with 9 trios to choose from, everyone can find one or two, or three that they like.  I am not one who usually go for mineralised trios, but these ones are super finely milled, and quite a few of them you can create an entire look from. I also avoided the neutral shades in this collection, and went for something with a nice pop of color.

First one, which you have seen in my LOTD yesterday, is Style Influencer. Just the name alone, I am SOLD.  I like the combination of the navy shimmery blue, and the pink-toned brown.  And I can see myself using the blue as a liner, or for a smokey eyes, with the brown as a blending color, or I can just use the brown all over my lids.  I also love the palest shade in this trio.  It is a very cool-toned palest blue color, and I used it yesterday, and I really really like it!  If there is an eyeshadow single that looks like this, I want it!

And speaking of style, I was thinking that day, I always seem to get anything with the name 'style' in it.  Cases in point, MAC Style Snob es, MAC Style Demon, MAC Personal Style.....I didn't do it consciously, but I am always getting drawn to products just by the name alone...(a few more cases in point: MAC Daft Pink, The Perfect Cheek, Petticoat, Devil, even Stereo Rose).

And I just want to compare the pink-brown shade in this trio to an eyeshadow I have.  I mentioned in my LOTD entry  that it reminded me of MAC Haux eyeshadow, but when I put them side by side, they are quite different (I guess they only look similar in my mind), and when swatched, they are even MORE different! Definitely  not dupes.

And I got the next one yesterday.  The grey and purple in this trio caught my eyes.  And again, a very nice 'colored', not neutral trio which allows you to use in a variety of ways.  It's Together-ness. Somehow the pale purple and grey just look so good together!  Even the MA said that this batch of eyeshadows are amazzzzzing, and there is less fallout etc etc... which I agree, because I used Style Influencer yesterday.

And the last one, is for my sister.  She got a neutral one, called Love-to-Love.  I think I might want to use this time to time!  Heheh!

One more item which I am waiting to arrive because I ordered from Michelle's spree, is In the Groove.  I swatched it yesterday at the counter, and I am so happy I got it!  And again the name, calls out to me.  I must get something which is the name of the collection it is released.  (Cases in point: Liberty of London e/s, Naughty Nauticals nail lacquer, can't recall off-hand now). Since I don't have it yet, I grabbed this picture from Temptalia. She has a whole series of reviews, swatches, dupes, recommendations which you MUST check out, and do your research before you hit the counters!

That's all, and I am very very happy with this collection!  I didn't get any of the lip products from this collection.  Nothing was very unique nor stood out to me.  I have enough of pinks and coral lippies to last me forever.  So yup, I think I did good.

And I kind of re-organised my drawers recently, I am converting my ikea helmer drawers to just for my MU or at least put 90% of the MU I like to use within easier reach.  Here are just the blush drawers. I don't depot any of my blushes, because I don't want to bring a whole blush palette for when I travel.  Eyeshadows, ok, but not blushes.

That's all, and thanks for looking!

I passed on all the eyeshadows but I got almost all the same items as you, lol! I wanted to get Happy Together and By Candlelight but I told myself to control. I bought SR yesterday and Petticoat this afternoon, waiting for another SR (hopefully I get it) and Hang Loose to arrive in Gwen's spree.

Lovely haul! I'm drawn towards the more neutral blushes in this collection as well instead of the typical bolder blushes. Really I shouldn't look at your hauls! haha. You've got me lemming for the In The Groove eyeshadow trio as well.

@Sara - did you manage to check out the collection today? I hope you did get Hang Loose eventually!

Soph: My pleasure .. and thanks for the wake-up call at 825am that morning! It was actually quite exciting and my dad had no idea why someone who usually sleeps in, was running around the house frantically getting dressed early in the morning! And I'm glad we got it too cos I do love how the MSFs look! And the KOI was well worth the whole frantic (wished the ants and broken wire were out of the equation tho) Sticking out tongue
