About Me

My name is Sophia, and I am in my early 30s. I am from Singapore and I am the sole writer of this blog.

About this Blog

I started this blog in 2006, I like to use a wide range of brands though I seem to have a growing preference for higher-end brands in recent years. I also like to share interesting things I have come across about makeup and beauty.

Currently The Makeup Blogette receives 39,000 unique views monthly or 2,238,932 views and counting.

My Makeup Style

I like classic looks (neutral tones on eyes, anything goes for lips & cheeks), though occasionally I try out dramatic/ statement looks.  I believe that a flawless base is the key to achieving great makeup looks.  I also believe that if you don't have great skin to start with, fake it with a good foundation routine, and even greater skincare.  I am currently loving Clarins & Lancome skincare products, and Vichy NormaDerm for tackling with breakouts.

What Cameras do I use?

Most of the pictures you see in post 2010 entries are taken with my Canon G-11.  Previously I was using Canon Ixus 80.  I do post some pictures which are taken with my iphone4 which I will state in that particular entry.  I have stopped watermarking my pictures as of 2011, because I think watermarks are ugly in general, and does not prevent people from stealing my pictures if they wish to.  I just take it as a compliment that my pictures are even worth stealing in the first place. I might look into getting a Canon EOS next year, not just for blogging purposes, but I also like photography in general.

My Favourite Makeup Brand(s)

It is hard to name just one, but I like NARS, Chanel, Illamasqua and the ocasional Guerlain, Dior & Urban Decay item.  I own quite a stash of MAC items, but recently I have stopped catching up with their collections, and I much prefer to splurge on a few really outstanding items.

Where to find me

Twitter (link button above!)  Email (stated above!)  Instagram (makeup_blogette)

I have no official Facebook fan page, and currently have no intention to start one at all.  The Makeup Blogette remains my personal hobby and property, so as such, I don't believe in having a Facebook fanpage for it.

Final Disclaimer

I bought/ paid for all of the products mentioned in this blog. I am not affliated to any company. If certain products are sent to me for review purposes, I will say so and express my honest opinions about them. In any case, I will only review and showcase the products which I have personally tried and tested, and enjoy using. I do not get paid to review anything.

No ads, no paid links etc please.  I am in charge of all content and pictures here.

I am not a makeup artist, nor do I have any professional training in makeup.

    Tag - Fondue of You

Think I am late on this tag, but whatever, I am kind of distracted now, so here goes:

    1. Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Singapore.

    2. Tell us about your family.

My parents, and 3 siblings stay with me.  And my most lovely, fluffy, adorable dog.  :0

    3. What are you up to?

Hmmm, I am trying to clear some work now, but I am so not doing it.  I am also dreading the start of another work week.

    4. What do you want to do in the future?

I want to travel the world.

    5. Tell us about your hair.

I limp, straight and fine hair which I have 'soft rebonded' a year back, so now I just use my flat iron/ tong thingy to style it.  I have also colored my hair jet black for the past 5 or 6 years. My natural hair color is more brownish.

    6. Tell us about your eyes.

My double eye lids have a life of their own, sometimes they aren't very obvious, and most of the time they are uneven.  I have sparse lashes.

    7. Tell us about your teeth.

Discolored, i think it's natural, as in, they just came out like that.  Other than that, OK I guess.

    8. Sweet or Savory?

    Savoury.

    9. Show us your favorite shoes.

In an ideal world, I would be wearing sky high wicked heels, like those LV African theme ones, or those Louboutin black pumps, etc etc... But sad to say, I run around a lot in my daily life, my feet are too big, and I am too tall to wear any kind of high heels without towering over everyone.  And I don't think I would throw $1000 on a pair of shoes, pretty as they are.  So... my fave recently is this pair of Havanias slippers which you have all seen before in this entry. In general, I prefer ballet flats.  Charles & Keith makes some nice ones and they are so cheap, I can totally see why all the C&K stores are swarming with people all the time

    10. Make a confession.

    Confession? I'm make up junkie.

    11. Who you would like to tag?

Anyone who has not done this.

Look of the Day (MAC Color Craft & Illamasqua)

    Hi

A super quick look using Natural Flare eyeshadow from MAC Color Craft collection.  (Pardon my messy hair)

On the Cheeks and Lips: Illamasqua's Panic Blusher, and Intense Lipgloss in MOVE.   The lipgloss smells YUMMY and it is so smooth and pigmented, and not sticky at all.  LOVES this.

Face: MAC studio sculpt foundation, MSF Natural Light Medium.

    Brows: Fling

    Updated Stash (Jul 09)

    Hi hi

Spent some time clearing and packing my stuff this morning, cos I bought a couple of storage trays to hold my expanding blusher/powder collection. So I decided to take a few pictures of my stash so far.  I am not going to list down everything I own, it's more like an overview, and how I keep my stuff organised.

I don't have a vanity table in my room (no space cos I have three wardrobes in my room), so whenever I do my MU routine, I sit on the floor or on my bed, and face the window if it is daytime, or if at night, I just use the bedside lamp.  The shelf and drawer thingy are right next to my bed... so I feel 'safe'  sleeping next to all my stash.  Haha.

    PART ONE:

    PART THREE

    PART TWO

This shelf contains my MAC palettes, Coastal Scents 26 & 28 Neutral palettes, 78 Palette, Highlight & Contour Palette, 10pc blush palette, Beauty Blender Sponge, My foundation products and Lipsticks, and my Brushroll with all my eye brushes.

Ok, here is the reason why I got started re-organising my stuff--- Remember that IKEA drawer thingy which I bought sometime back to hold my nail polish stash?  I have been using one of the empty drawers to hold all the new products which I bought recently, and now I have finally decided to give them their 'permanent home'.

And the overview:  I am quite happy with how the whole thing looks. All my MAC blushers, face powders, NARS blushers etc etc fit into this drawer.  A couple of random MAC eyeshadows and makeup bases line the side.

    Breakdown of MAC blushers:

The Pinks - Azalea (Pro), Pink Swoon, Angel

The Plums - Plum Foolery, Dirty Plum (Pro)

    The Peaches - Peachy Keen

The Mineralised: Nuance, Pleasantry, Intenso, Improvise, Daft Pink, Style Demon

In the next tray, the Face powers and MSFs and Misc face stuff:

MSFs - Natural (Light Medium), Pink Porcelain, Perfect Topping, Smooth Merge, Blonde, Petticoat

    Beauty Powders: Alpha Girl

    Bronzer - Solar Riche

Smashbox Dolce Vita blusher, Stila Convertible Lip & Cheek Colour Illium

NARS: Sin, Orgasm, Deep Throat, and single eyeshadow in Night Star

Do I have too much makeup? Yes.  Do I spend too much money on makeup? Prolly.  What can I say? Makeup (beauty related stuff in general) is my hobby, much as how someone would spend money and time on gardening tools, plants, kitchen equipment, cooking, LEGO collection, figurines etc etc.

    So my stash & hobby=my makeup. :)

That's all, and hope this might give you some idea of how to organise your stuff, and who knows, do share some tips on how YOU do your thing.  :)  Thanks for reading, have a fab weekend!!

    Little Fashion Haul

Hi!  I know I have been shopping kind of a lot lately.

Just want to show a few great items I got:

From the 12% Tangs sale this week, I bought 2 Fcuk items.  They are the same design, different colors, and lengths.

    $39.90 each.

*Dress, comes with a waist sash.

    *Blouse version.

Then today, went Vivocity with sis (who said topshop is having some sale....)

So I chanced upon this blouse which I have tried on way before, but didn't decide to get it then.  But now it is 50% off.

TOPSHOP blouse. $35.10  * cute for work, and worn with a pencil skirt, and great for weekends with denim shorts or jeans.

Then went to Zara, they started their further reductions, so I got this studded tunic/singlet.  Like the hemline, which is rounded.  I am a sucker for little details like this. Pair with leggings.  I don't fancy Zara sales in general, because most of their merchandise are often ripped and dirty from too much tossing and rummaging by eager bargain hunters, but this singlet which I found is in mint perfect condition... or else I totally would not have bought it.

And lastly, for clothes, we have a Forever 21 top, which is the only item I got which is not a sale item.  I like the back detail,it is too cute - check out the flowery patch thingy, and the front is kind of flattering, it covers all my bits and gives an overall slimming effect. I can even accept the busy print of this blouse.  Ha ha.

And lastly the cheap deal of the day, a little necklace for $3... everyone was going crazy over the sale, Diva clearing stock or smth. Everything was going at $3.

*not too clear, but the trinklets are a little apple shaped thingy, some bead, etc.  Very dainty.

That's all, and hope you enjoyed this entry.

Look of the day : Colour Craft Collection

    Hi hi...

Just showing a look I did before I leave the house. Apologies for the poor pic quality, but trust me, the colors are way more gorgeous in person. It is the fastest to load pics here using my in bulit i-sight.

I used everything from the Color Craft collection, in terms of Eyes and Cheeks.

Eyes: Natural Flare eyeshadow 'quad'  This is a very unique neutral palette.  I also used this earlier in the day for work and used the lighter colors but for this evening, I packed on the colors and used more of the darker shade.  Love this quad.

    Brows: Fling Brow Pencil

Cheeks: Improvise on cheeks, and Porcelain Pink MSF (which I already own from years ago) as highlight.  I love Improvise and am so glad the MA psyched me into buying it.  I used Daft Pink earlier today, and my sister was asking me what color I used, cos it looked really pretty.

Face: Studio Sculpt foundation, and MSF Natural Light Medium.

Lips: Ever So Rich Cremesheen Glass

Thanks, and hope you like this entry!  Woot for the weekend!

Collective MAC haul (Colour Craft & Naked Honey Collections, misc)

    Hi hi!

This is going to be a major MAC haul post.  I didn't buy these things all at once, I would say they are accumulated in the past 2 weeks.  If you follow me on twitter, you would have known I have been stalking the MAC counters for the CC blushers.  And also thanks to Diana's heads up on the Naked Honey found at DFS, I got something there too.

And I didn't pay full prices for most of the items...so there was great savings involved.  Let me give a breakdown and pictures.  I havent used any of the Color Craft products, nor swatched them.

    Everything:

    • Smooth Merge MSF $46 (This I got at 25% thanks to sis's staff discount at Robinsons)
    • Improvise, Style Demon, Daft Pink ($44) each, I got them at Isetan MAC, and I had a $50 voucher to offset the total damage.  When I first heard of this collection, Daft Pink HAD me.  The name and the color. And you know I am such a sucker for deep blushers (ref Intenso, Azalea, and more recently Illamasqua's Panic), hence Style Demon--a deep cranberry color.  And the MA I met yesterday a Tangs totally sold me on Improvise.
    • Natural Flare eyeshadow 'quad' ($33) which is good value, really.  You get 4 colors. This I got during the latest Tangs 12% rebate thingy.
    • Fling brow pencil. ($27) bought on the same day with the eyeshadow. I want to draw my brows really LIGHT color these days.
    • 116 brush, which I got prolly last week, and I used a $50 Tangs voucher to offset the $57 (abt that price, can't remember).
    • 225 brush, which I got 2 weeks back, and I used $60 voucher and some rebates $ to offset the $72 price totally.

    *all prices are in SGD.

The 116 brush is a superb blusher brush, it picks up product perfectly, and applies smoothly and it is so soft and fluffy, yet precise.

Naked Honey ---- 1 Item Haul

    The Honey Salve.

Super rich, I rubbed it on my thumb -- with dried skin.. and it works so well.  I guess this cream/salve thingy is prolly similar to  many other products out there, but you do get a lot of product for the price ($40). I definitely see this as something I can throw in my bag and rub it all over wherever I need to.

I prolly will do another collective haul in 2 weeks' time?  I have a bunch of misc skincare items, and some stuff which friends of friends and cousin are bringing back from overseas.  So... stay tuned, if you like hauls!

Illamasqua Haul: Make Up for your alter ego

    Hi hi!

I am so excited for these to arrive.  The colors are gorgeous, and I am sure most of you have seen the products online, esp if you are subbed to WSITN, gossmakeupartist, lolllipop26, misschievous, pixiwoo etc, you would have seen them talking about this relatively new MU brand based in the UK.

I am curious to try it out, esp after gossmakeupartist (Wayne Goss, oh so cute and so polite) talking about the products, I personally find that he and pixiwoo some of the most honest makeup gurus out there, they don't go rant and rave excessively and they have real tips which you can learn from.

Soooooooooooo...... on to the stuff I bought.  I was kind of wary about the exchange rate, cos everything is in UK pound, but I wanted to get a good feel of the brand, so I wanted something for the face, eyes and lips.

The packaging which the stuff came in is super sleek, and chic.

    *Close up of the envelope.

    * The contents: A catalogue, 3 postcards.  Stuff which I ordered.

#1 - The SIRENS palette.  I figure it is value for money, and the colors are actually ones I would all use comfortably. And besides I couldn't decide what colors I want if I were to buy them individually, and also, most of the colors which caught my eye were sold out on the site.

Next, something for the face, PANIC powder blusher.  This is a red blusher. Really bold, but I think I can make any color work, it all boils down to the brush and application technique.  Reminds me of Frankly Scarlet from MAC but PANIC is matte.

Next are for the eyes/lips the Medium pencil in HEX.  This is a nude color which is perfect for highlighting the Cupid's Bow, lining ur lower lids to brighten up your eyes etc.  And then there is the Intense Lipgloss in  MOVE.  It looks like a mauve pink??  Not sure how to describe this.

And to show you the catalogue:

I haven't swatched any of these yet, and I can't wait to do a whole look with all these goodies over the weekend.  Stay tuned for more good stuff in the next couple of weeks!!!

Hope you enjoyed this entry, and thanks for reading!!

    What's in my makeup bag?

    Hi!

I think this tag has been done by almost everyone... so I am kind of late on the bandwagon.  There is a good reason though.  I don't really touch up my makeup on a daily basis.  I might touch up when I go out during the weekend if i am out the whole day.  But day to day, I just blot my oily T-zone usually with facial blotters (even too lazy to use my blot powder unless I really have to), or if I am 'spotty' I just touch up with concealer.

Right now I am very spotty, so I carry around a heavy duty concealer around.   And these are random stuff in my makeup bag.

Alright.... enough of rambling... so here goes:

My Boring Makeup bag.  Plastic, see thru, and MAC.  (Free with some stuff I bought a couple of years ago)  Like the fixed shape.

    The Contents:

Hair Stuff - Hair scrunchie that my mom made, clips, pins.

Dental stuff - disposable toothpicks/ floss thingy, I bought them recently when I had an impossible urge to pick my teeth after a meal. Since then, I always throw a few in my makeup bag.

Makeup stuff - MAC Blot Powder (amazing for making your face look fresh after a long day), Dazzleglass in Extra Amps, Viva Glam 5 lipstick, Blanketty lipstick, Studio Finish concealer in NC20 for covering spots.  Gatsby facial blotter - I like the plasticky ones as opposed to the papery/ powdered types.  There is a certain sick fascination and satisfaction I get in blotting my face til the blotter is all oily looking.

And that's all. If I can't fit this in my bag, I will totally omit the whole bag.

Hope  this is not boring, and thanks for reading!

    Just a side note:

I like watching videos, and honestly I admire people who take the time to film, talk to themselves in front of a camera, in their closet, toilet, bedroom etc etc... that take some kind of guts.  Cos when you put yourself out there esp on YT, there are loads of weirdo creeps out there, or bigots who just make very unfair and nasty comments (though that also comes with the territory when you choose to 'broadcast' on such a public platform).  Having said that, I don't think I will ever do any videos, cos for one thing, I am hopeless at editing, and uploading seems to be another hassle, and also, I already talk soooooo much at work on a daily basis, I very much prefer to express myself in writing and pictures (I wish to do cute captions, cool watermarks, but again, time is of essence here), so I don't really want to hear myself talk talk talk online.  Yup... anyway.. just in case anyone is wondering.  :)

MAC Color Craft Collection -- First look at the BLUSHERS

Sad to say, they aren't mine yet.  I saw this on SephoraJunkie's latest videos - if you are not subscribed to her.  She seems to post only haul videos, and she usually gets everything in every MAC collection.  I am always in awe.

So she bought ALL the blushers from the CC collection, and I can't wait to show you girls.  When is it finally in store in SG?? I haven't been this excited about anything from MAC in a while.

I am totally lemming Daft Pink and MAYBE Style Demon.

    * Daft Pink is the bottom row, first one on the Left, and Style Demon is bottom row, first one on  the Right.

And you must check out her video yourself,  CLICK HERE. Her Color Craft collection haul is in FOUR PARTS.  OMG.

As for me.... I do have a few stuff coming my way from various places, and I will do a collective haul entry when everything is in place. So excited.  From drugstore, to new brands to the usual MAC.... lotsa things to play with!

Have been stalking MAC counters and planning how to make my purchases to get maximum products at maximum savings... lotsa plotting and stalking, and calling... If you followed me on Twitter, all these prolly isn't news to you.  :)

That's all and thanks for reading.

Look of the Day feat. my Sister (MAC Stowaways Quad)

    Hi hi!

So my sister was putting on her makeup, and she was asking me if she should try out any new colors etc, and since I still had my palettes out from the previous post and so I said why not try the Stowaways Quad, I think you would love Satin Taupe.

She was getting so into the make up process that I ended up taking pictures of her eye makeup . So I am sharing this with you ladies.

She used every color in this quad except for the dark blue shade.

She primed her eyes with TFSI and applied the yellow shade on her lids.  Then she applied Satin Taupe (the brown shade) on her crease.   For highlight, she used the lightest shade.  She also used this color on her inner corners.

She has larger and rounder eyes than me.  I only started taking pictures from this point onwards, just before she put on eye liner.

Next, she lined her eyes with the MUFE purple liner, upon my persuasion that it would give her eyes an extra pop of color.

Then she smudged the liner, flicking it slightly outwards.  You see a vast difference in how defined & awake her eyes look after the eyeliner.

    Next, she applied falsies.

Then she lined her lower lids. And the look is almost complete.

For the finishing touch, she used a liquid liner to line the inner corner, as you can see, the inner corner is not lined yet.

The irony is that I forgot to take a picture of the finished look.  Haha.  Oh well.  On the rest of her face, she used Solar Riche (from Style Warrior) as a blusher, and dusted Alpha Girl beauty powder (from Heatherette) all over her face.

That's all, and thanks for reading.
